Biking 150 miles for a cause - in a dress and high heels
Lexica
by Lexica  11-5-2009    3
More: It all started when Tsai began to work in a hospital many years ago. A native of Taiwan, she was trained in Japan in the art of shiatsu massage. So while working at the hospital, "I started to put my hands where they hurt," she says. Tsai began regularly giving massages to cancer patients, until one day, about 26 years ago, she massaged a patient with MS. It was then and there that she first heard about the bike ride and decided to participate. "In Taiwan, riding a bike is very common," explains Tsai's grandson, Alan Sim, who also participates in City to Shore -- 2009 was his sixth year. "So she grabbed her little one-speed bike and was doing the ride." And why the nice dress and high heels? Tsai says that's just her normal biking outfit. "I went to church, so I always dressed up and would ride my bicycle," she says. "So that's why I do it that way -- I do it that way naturally. That's the way I ride my bike." :-D

Barcelona - the Gateway to Spain
FincaFantastica
by FincaFantastica  8-18-2009
Particularly famous for Antoni Gaudi's unique and radical style of architecture, Barcelona has also produced great artists of note. Among them Pablo Casals, Josep Carreras and Joan Miro whose work is celebrated in the park named after him. Pablo Picasso, although a native of Malaga, spent much time here and his works can be seen at the Picasso Museum northeast of the magnificent port.

Americans Testimonials Backing Canada's Health Care System
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-16-2009
Nationalized health care system of Canada is not even being considered here in the U.S. Why? Because congress and insurance companies are too deeply embedded in each others pockets. Listen to the arguments from doctors, big Pharma and private insurance. They care more about their financial interests than getting people to participate in the health care system, many for the first times in their lives. What we need is a hybrid system. Every American should at least have access to annual check ups (this can be subsidized by government based on your ability to pay). After that, we should be able to participate in which ever plan is available whether it is government run or private. This would create competition and hopefully help keep cost of private insurance down. I may be naïve in thinking this could work but we should not be forced to participate if we don’t want to.

Squint Eyes-Artist & Indian Scout
ofcapri
by ofcapri  5-23-2009
A fascinating early employee of the Smithsonian Institution was Tichkematse (Squint Eyes), a Cheyenne Indian who worked for the institution in a variety of capacities between 1879 and 1881. Raised to a life based on buffalo hunting, Tichkematse was among a group of southern Plains warriors who were held as prisoners of war by the United States government from 1875-1878. While imprisoned, he learned to speak English and to read and write. Upon release he attended school at the Hampton Institute in Virginia for about a year before coming to the Smithsonian.

Aboriginal Rock Art at Risk
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  7-26-2008    1
But the peninsula is also seeing increasing industrial activity, including a gas processing plant, a fertiliser factory and iron ore port facilities, making it the only place in Australia to feature on the World Monuments Fund's list of the most endangered sites. Smalldon believes the rock art has suffered since mining took off in the Pilbara, which holds some of the richest mineral deposits on earth, in the 1960s. "We had nearly one million panels of rock art," Smalldon said.
