Dismantling America by Thomas Sowell
merrie
by merrie  10-30-2009    4
life and death decisions about your loved ones? Does any of this sound like America? How about a federal agency giving school children material to enlist them on the side of the president? Merely being assigned to sing his praises in class is apparently not enough. How much of America would be left if the federal government continued on this path? President Obama has already floated the idea of a national police force, something we have done without for more than two centuries. We already have local police forces all across the country and military forces for national defense, as well as the FBI for federal crimes and the National Guard for local emergencies. What would be the role of a national police force created by Barack Obama, with all its leaders appointed by him? It would seem more like the brown shirts of dictators than like anything American. Those who say that the Obama administration should have investigated those people more thoroughly before appointing .

As Steven Thomma explained for McClatchy: In truth, Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., has proposed a bill that would order the Homeland Security Department to prepare national emergency centers — to provide temporary housing and medical facilities in national emergencies such as hurricanes. The bill also would allow the centers to be used to train first responders, and for "other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security.

The Nightmare of Rationing in Oregon
merrie
by merrie  8-24-2009    1
We as a nation can’t afford to learn the same lesson that Oregon is learning the hard way. A brief look at the state’s rationing policy demonstrates how out of whack the Oregon Health Services Commission’s medical priorities are. For example, under the OHSC directive, a person in need of an emergency appendectomy (prioritized 84th) would be denied that treatment before an individual in need of treatment for “tobacco dependence” (ranked 6th). The state’s prioritization database reads like a case study in medical prioritization turned on its head. Like those pushing preventive care in the current national debate, administrators say the rationing program’s foundational focus is on prevention rather than on actual medical conditions and emergencies. This was borne out of a desire to save the government more money in the long run. However, as always happens when bureaucrats and elected officials are left to work out the nuts and bolts of a program, the determinations . . .

Wall Street's Disaster Has Spawned Our Greatest Terrorist Threat
glennbah
by glennbah  2-17-2009    1
The specter of social unrest was raised at the U.S. Army War College in November in a monograph titled "Known Unknowns: Unconventional 'Strategic Shocks' in Defense Strategy Development." The military must be prepared, the document warned, for a "violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States," which could be provoked by "unforeseen economic collapse," "purposeful domestic resistance," "pervasive public health emergencies" or "loss of functioning political and legal order."

Auxiliary Power Unit Helped Capt.Sullenberger III Land Aircraft Safely
merrie
by merrie  1-20-2009
Gary Hummel, training committee chairman for the U.S. Airline Pilots Association, said Monday that the pilots do train for dual-engine failures in simulators, but at much higher altitudes. Mr. Hummel, who has flown the A320 in the past but now flies Boeing 767s for US Airways, says the carrier's pilots "do not practice ditching" in simulators. But in addition to basic flying skills, the ditching also underscores another factor pilots should consider in surviving such emergencies: the need to quickly choose a course of action, even if it goes against normal procedures. Barely 30 seconds after his aircraft hit the birds and lost nearly all thrust from both engines, the captain disregarded the advice of air-traffic controllers and decided that ditching in the Hudson was the best option. "The timeliness of that decision gave the crew time to set up properly" for touchdown more than two minutes later, "Good judgment allowed them to use their skills to make that perfect landing."

Pentagon reserves troops for domestic emergencies
spirithiker
by spirithiker  12-1-2008
I feel safer already. Please excuse my snarkiness, but since my trust in Bush's reasoning has been shaken (by just about everything he does) I get just a little concerned when the military begins beefing up their numbers in the name of 'domestic security'. I want to believe the Pentagon is looking out for our best interests but I can't help thinking they know something we don't and won't tell us. If the U.S. is attacked it would be good to already have more security available but I can't shake the admitted paranoid feeling that something big is waiting just around the bend. And I don't think it is going to be welcomed.

Since the end of the Civil War deployment of the U.S. military inside the U.S. has been prohibited under The Posse Comitatus Act (except National Guard and Coast Guard, and use of the military on an emergency ad hoc basis is permitted, such as what happened after Hurricane Katrina).

Martial Law Would Be Declared If Bailout Not Passed In House
sahara
by sahara  10-3-2008    6
As former California congressman Dan Hamburg said earlier this year, the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act gives the executive the power to invoke martial law in case of “major public emergencies,” not limited to “a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, a terrorist attack,” but also “any other condition in which the President determines that domestic violence has occurred to the extent that state officials cannot maintain public order.” Obviously, a financial crash and ensuing social chaos of the sort now being implemented by the ruling elite would be characterized as a dire emergency and a near perfect excuse to impose martial law, a long standing goal of the elite. As the Army Times reported last month, a battle-hardened “homeland” brigade is now “going domestic” after spending time in Iraq. It appears this illegal deployment (under Posse Comitatus) is designed to respond to “public disorder” as the economy is deliberately and cynically dismantled at the behest of our rulers.

State of Emergency: The US in the Final Six Months of the George W. Bush Administration
papananook
by papananook  6-13-2008    1
Despite time constraints, there are clear signs that the president, the vice-president and their neocon collaborators are not finished. The constant saber-rattling toward Iran, with strong support from Israel, should send a chill down the spine of any peace-loving American. Military chiefs who oppose the president are “retired,” as observed most recently with the March dismissals of CENTCOM commander Admiral William Fallon and 6th Fleet commander Vice-Admiral John Stufflebeem. Public opinion counts for nothing. In a March 24 interview with ABC’s Martha Raddatz, vice president Dick Cheney responded to a question about the war weariness of Americans with a languid “So?”

FBI Covers Up Patriot Act Abuses with Retroactive Subpoenas
Jdfodio
by Jdfodio  3-17-2008    1
Key Take-Aways: 1. Illegal acquisition of phone records on thousands of Americans from 2003 to 2006. 2. Top officials at FBI's counter-terroism division signed blanket subpoenas "retroactively to justify the FBI's acquisition of data through the exigent letters or or other informal requests," the Justice Department's Inspector General Glenn Fine found. 3. FBI has secret contracts with AT&T, Verizon, and MCI and won't release those companies from the contracts. 4. None of the subpoenas or National Security Letters were cleared with FBI's general counsel. 5. FBI agents issue tens of thousands of National Security Letters annually to get phone records, portions of credit histories, and track down IP addresses without getting a judge's approval in cases involving suspected terrorism, computer crimes or espionage. 6. Highest number of NSL requests came in 2004, an election year. Just a coincidence? 7. Some of those retroactive NSLs sought records that the FBI was not au

North American Army Created Without OK By Congress

In Canada, the agreement paving the way for the militaries of the U.S. and Canada to cross each other's borders to fight domestic emergencies was not announced either by the Harper government or the Canadian military, prompting sharp protest. "It's kind of a trend when it comes to issues of Canada-U.S. relations and contentious issues like military integration," Stuart Trew, a researcher with the Council of Canadians told the Canwest News Service. "We see that this government is reluctant to disclose information to Canadians..... In Nov. 2007, WND published a six-part exclusive series, detailing WND's on-site presence during the NORAD-USNORTHCOM Vigilant Shield 2008, an exercise which involved Canada Command as a participant. In an exclusive interview with WND during Vigilant Shield 2008, Gen. Renuart affirmed USNORTHCOM would deploy U.S. troops on U.S. soil should the president declare a domestic emergency in which the Department of Defense ordered USNORTHCOM involvement.

Rule by fear or rule by law?
papananook
by papananook  2-23-2008    1
The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees. According to diplomat and author Peter Dale Scott, the KBR contract is part of a Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of "all removable aliens" and "potential terrorists." Fraud-busters such as Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, have complained about these contracts, saying that more taxpayer dollars should not go to taxpayer-gouging Halliburton. But the real question is: What kind of "new programs" require the construction and refurbishment of detention facilities in nearly every state of the union with the capacity to house perhaps millions of people? Sect. 1042 of the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), "Use of the Armed Forces in Major Public Emergencies," gives the executive the power to invoke martial law. For the first time in more than a century, the presiden

The 'Surrender And Defeat' Party's Quagmire
merrie
by merrie  11-24-2007
When it became apparent in August that Lt. Gen. David Petraeus would have good news for Congress, House Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina warned darkly such news would be “a real problem for us.” The Party of Surrender is floundering. Yes, it is time to talk of “quagmire.” But the quagmire is not the artificial one in Iraq, which the media and the Left had hoped would doom George W. Bush. This is a quagmire of the Democrats own making. It is a quagmire of defeatism and surrender, where a common-sense approach to our national security has been replaced by partisan measures aimed to enrich trial lawyers and endanger Americans. And it is a quagmire in which the Democrats are now stuck.

Barack Obama: U.S. Foreign Policy NOT based on Fear
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  11-3-2007    1
More: A post-post-9/11 strategy must harness the forces of globalization while honestly addressing the growing "perception of unfairness" around the world; must actively promote, not just democracy, but "a world of liberty under law"; and must renew multilateral instruments like the United Nations. In mainstream foreign-policy circles, Barack Obama is seen as the true bearer of this vision. "There are maybe 200 people on the Democratic side who think about foreign policy for a living," as one such figure, himself unaffiliated with a campaign, estimates. "The vast majority have thrown in their lot with Obama." Hillary's circle consists of the senior figures from her husband's term in office — secretary of state Madeleine Albright, national security adviser Sandy Berger and UN ambassador Richard Holbrooke. But drill down into Washington's foreign-policy hives, whether the Carnegie Endowment or the Brookings Institution or Georgetown University, and you'll hit Obama supporters.

Planning for a Climate-Changed World
Moonowler
by Moonowler  7-7-2007    1
hough the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has concluded with 90 percent certainty that human activity is warming the planet--and spelled out the likelihood of consequences that include higher seas, droughts, and fiercer storms--the United States is committing scant resources to providing usable information to the people who respond to emergencies, plan for urban development, manage coastal areas, and make sure the crops keep growing and the reservoirs stay full. Equipping people to deal with climate change could mean simply giving state and local planners access to a wealth of existing information--such as calculations made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that could indicate how far inland storm surges would move if sea levels were higher.
