POPSIntelligence and Empathy He stresses that the human mind does not qualify as a completely ‘General Intelligence’ but lies somewhere on the spectrum between AGI on one end and ‘Narrow AI’ on the other. This is one of several reasons why he does not expect AGI to be achieved by mimicking the workings of the human brain. He describes how our brains fool us into believing that we understand our actions and decisions when we don’t. And why modeling an AI too closely on the human brain might make it too, vulnerable to false notions. He also says, ‘I think virtual worlds are going to be absolutely critical to the development of Artificial General Intelligence.’ As well as ‘Right now connecting AI’s to virtual worlds is probably the best way to get an AI to have a general human-like embodied experience.’

POPSBody Language of Winners and Losers Could be Innate "In the end, it’s all about evolution. The discovery by psychologists suggests that these gestures of pride and shame are hard wired into the human brain, probably because they were universal signs of dominance and submission among our ape relatives and ancestors . So when you see arms raised in victory at the Beijing Olympics, you might really be seeing an symbol of dominance that humans developed long ago."

POPSsmallest ever snake found Like other members of the "small" club, L. carlae only produces one offspring at a time, in this case a single slender egg (some other snakes give birth to live young). In addition, its young are giants relatively speaking. In general, the hatchlings of the smallest snakes are one-half the length of an adult, while the largest snakes have hatchlings that are only one-tenth the length of an adult.

POPSAvoidable Tragedy I suppose it easy to be a Monday morning quarterback and find fault with the evident poor planning but one only needs to do a modicum of investigation and see that these types of events have a sad and long history of misfortune. I find it strange that there is not more regulation to control gatherings like this.

POPSEclipse-Watchers Worldwide Gear Up For Friday's Event Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive. Many cultures thought a demon or dragon was devouring the sun. In ancient China, "any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor," according to Sten Odenwald of the department of physics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The ancient Chinese banged pots and drums to shoo the frightful sun-eating character away. In India, people would immerse themselves in water to help the sun fight the dragon. Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse. Risk of eye injury Eclipses can indeed be dangerous

POPSThe Fundagenitals Strike Again A hint of desperation begins to appear as the Bush presidency runs out of time. In their never ending quest to control women and prevent them from obtaining health care, they're running to pass legislation that attempts to make an end run around the law by using the pretext of religion to deny a woman access to contraceptives by conflating them with abortion. Luckily, so far their narrow religious tenets have been held in check by more tolerant voices. But make no mistake, these Religious Right activists will not stop their campaign to impose their views on the rest of the nation.

POPSCompanies Catching on to Telework, but is the Corporate Culture Ready?
So far I've worked for both public and private companies, for large government organizations, and for myself. I've also been a telework proponent for years. I can say that, without a doubt, I've been most productive when I'm allowed to dictate my work environment. Which is perhaps why this article really resonated with me. This post from (surprise!) WebWorkerDaily is probably the best collection of telework-related advice I've ever read. Aimed at large corporations, Mike Gunderloy & Aliza Sherman do a bang-up job summarizing myths associated with corporate telework as well as the benefits- a few of which you may not have thought of before! It's true that large corporations seen to have a hard time "getting it" when it comes to initiatives like telework. Telework requires a certain amount of trust that your employees will behave responsibility while out of your direct control (aka the office). Not all corporate cultures allow for this to occur. And even in cultures that do, many e

POPSScientists demonstrate highly directional semiconductor lasers To get around such conventional limitations, the researchers sculpted a metallic structure, dubbed a plasmonic collimator, consisting of an aperture and a periodic pattern of sub-wavelength grooves, directly on the facet of a quantum cascade laser emitting at a wavelength of ten microns, in the invisible part of the spectrum known as the mid-infrared where the atmosphere is transparent. In so doing, the team was able to dramatically reduce the divergence angle of the beam emerging from the laser from a factor of twenty-five down to just a few degrees in the vertical direction. The laser maintained a high output optical power and could be used for long range chemical sensing in the atmosphere, including homeland security and environmental monitoring, without requiring bulky collimating optics.
