POPSWhat's with all the zombies?
Call me a zombie pundit, but I agree with "World War Z" author Max Brooks' suggestion that the concurrent rise of zombie pop and political cultures is no coincidence. "Zombies are an apocalyptic threat, we are living in times of apocalyptic anxiety (and) we need a vessel in which to coalesce those anxieties," he says. In fact, I'll go out on a severed limb and take it further: If zombies specifically represent the apocalyptic downsides of immortalized mindlessness, then today’s zombie zeitgeist is not merely a result of scary quandaries created by stupidity. It is a reaction to both those problems and the sense that they can never be thwarted. Here we are, a year after a financial implosion that should have driven a stake in the heart of free market fundamentalism. Here we are, a year after an election that was supposed to pour holy water on Wall Street vampires, exorcise the economy's demons and challenge the ancient mummies of neoconservative foreign policy. Yet here we are,

POPSMummy autopsy result 'was wrong' The first scientific autopsy on an ancient Egyptian mummy probably got the cause of death wrong, research suggests. By studying the thinning of the pelvic bone, he established the woman was 50-55 when she died. He also determined that she was a mother, and overweight. He then found that she had an ovarian tumour, and concluded that this - a condition he called ovarian dropsy - probably caused her death. However, the tumour has subsequently been found to be benign, and the UCL team believe the key to the woman's death was the fact that her lungs were inflamed. Tuberculosis was widespread in ancient Egypt and can cause these symptoms.

POPSEgypt Mummy Has Sex Changed Dr. Jesse : "In that one in particular the soft tissues were really well preserved and you can actually still see the penis is still intact, you can make out some of the structure of the internal organ of the penis and so that's how we were able to tell beyond a reasonable doubt that this was a male." "There are actually 64 detectors in there. And each one of these detectors are point six millimeters thick, so each one of those can give us a slice, a cut if you will, of the actual body or whatever it you're scanning in there. POPSTattoos There's certainly evidence that women had tattoos on their bodies and limbs from figurines c. 4000-3500 B.C. to occasional female figures represented in tomb scenes c. 1200 B.C. and in figurine form c. 1300 B.C., all with tattoos on their thighs. Also small bronze implements identified as tattooing tools were discovered at the town site of Gurob in northern Egypt and dated to c. 1450 B.C. And then, of course, there are the mummies with tattoos, from the three women already mentioned and dated to c. 2000 B.C. to several later examples of female mummies with these forms of permanent marks found in Greco-Roman burials at Akhmim.

POPS Tattoos What is the earliest evidence of tattoos? In terms of tattoos on actual bodies, the earliest known examples were for a long time Egyptian and were present on several female mummies dated to c. 2000 B.C. But following the more recent discovery of the Iceman from the area of the Italian-Austrian border in 1991 and his tattoo patterns, this date has been pushed back a further thousand years when he was carbon-dated at around 5,200 years old.

POPS'Sleeping Beauty" 'Mummy' formula found continues: Formalin, now widely used by embalmers, is a mixture of formaldehyde and water that kills bacteria. Salafia was one of the first to use this for embalming bodies. Alcohol, along with the arid conditions in the catacombs, would have dried Rosalia's body and allowed it to mummify. Glycerin would have kept her body from drying out too much, and salicylic acid would have prevented the growth of fungi. But it was the zinc salts, according to Melissa Johnson Williams, executive director of the American Society of Embalmers, that were most responsible for Rosalia's amazing state of preservation. Zinc, which is no longer used by embalmers in the United States, petrified Rosalia's body.
