Self Proclaimed Multitaskers Aren't that Good at Multitasking
billpar
by billpar  8-26-2009
Anyone who claims they can multitask is LYING. The human brain cannot multitask, PERIOD. You might think you're multitasking, but you are really switching between tasks in your brain. Every time you switch tasks, your brain has to reload the context of what it was last doing on that task. This is not a big deal for small tasks, as the state information is not that much. But the bigger (conceptually) a task is, the longer it takes to reload all the state information into your brain, and the bigger the efficiency hit against you is. If you find that you can do things no problem by switching tasks, it most likely means that what you're doing is not that mentally demanding, or you are not being effective in what you're doing. A perfect example is if you are surfing the web, watching TV, and twittering at the same time. You might be able to do all 3 of those tasks at once, but no one can argue that any of those things requires more than a sliver of brainpower.

Training your brain to multitask! Should you?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  8-25-2009
This article reminds me of when I used to teach Time Management courses for corporate HR programs. No matter how many strategies you would try to teach, it all really came down to a single principle: You can only do one thing at a time well. I used to call it O.T.A.T. meaning "one thing at a time." Multitask basically meant switching activities quickly. Technology supports this speeding up process...read the article and tell my your thoughts.

Texting While Driving (car crash reënactment)
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  8-18-2009
What it looks like before, during , and after a 3-car accident caused by someone texting while driving. No limbs get torn off, but there's plenty of realistic blood & broken glass. Anyone who gets into an automobile (let alone behind the wheel) should be required to watch this. Just because you're a safe driver doesn't mean there's not some dangerous moron driving the other car. Me? I don't own a car and take the less-driven streets on foot/bike. I don't generally trust you maniacs who drive cars. Not when you're behind the wheel of a 2000+ death machine & out in public. And yes, talking on the phone, even with a hands-free, is JUST AS BAD . It's about diverting your attention. "Oh, but I can multi-task". bullshit. I live in Oakland. I'm not worried about terrorism @ the port or getting shot in a bad neighborhood. But the car-drivers, they are the ones most likely to kill me if I'm not paying attention

You’d be hard-pressed to notice any design differences on the front of the iphone 3G. The iphone 3G hangs on to all the original iphone features and throws in a few more, so we’ll concentrate on what’s new.

“In Congress, We Have to Multi-Task” Oh, Sheila
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2009    4
“We need to make sure we get on national news,” Lee quipped, quelling the crowd by having a college opera student sing the national anthem. Occasional chastising punctuated the rest of the meeting, some comments accusing her of wasting time when introducing a state politician who had joined the crowd and other jeers when she talked on her cell phone while a constituent posed a question to her. “In Congress, we have to multi-task,” she explained. Yep: Avoiding questions, not reading bills, and trying to stifle dissent all at once takes a special kind of public servant.

Don’t teenagers have an advantage when it comes to multitasking? They grew up in a technology-driven world, right? They pop out of the womb with the ability to send 100 text messages per minute.
