Bush, Mukasey, Cheney Claim Exec Privilege, Obstructing in Plame Case
blueridge
by blueridge  7-18-2008
But the Executive has no "privilege" to violate the law, nor to obstruct justice. And Cheney, by his own words, is not part of the "executive branch". Mukasey, the new AG replacing Alberto (Speedy) Gonzales, shows why he was chosen by Bush, i.e. to continue to obstruct justice. As even republican federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said on the Plame case, "a cloud hangs over the VP office", and Scott McClellan just opened up and published his account that Bush personally admitted authorizing the Plame leak! This is stonewalling to avoid prosecution for a "high crime" worthy of impeachment by George and Dick both.

DOJ Official: Rumsfeld Personally Approved Torture
Wisco
by Wisco  6-14-2008
The piece goes on: Fine issued a 437-page report last month on the Bush administration’s interrogation policies, which found that White House officials ignored FBI concerns about the treatment of detainees... “The Bush administration may have systematically implemented, from the top down, detainee interrogation policies that constitute torture or otherwise violate the law," the letter to Mukasey says. “We believe that these serious and significant revelations warrant an immediate investigation to determine whether actions taken by the President, his Cabinet, and other Administration officials are in violation of the War Crimes Act, the Anti-Torture Act, and other U.S. and international laws.”

Wexler Pushing for Impeachment While Praising Pelosi

see site for video When? Millions of Americans have been calling for impeachment for a long time, Rep. Wexler and I admire you for pushing the issue in the HR....BUT-- I wonder why you praise Speaker Pelosi so highly since she is the person who took impeachment off the table from the start of the movement to take these criminals in the WH down to where they belong--under oath and before a jury of their peers. Get going! Ms. Pelosi shouldn't have to get her butt kissed to do her job defending the Constitution!

Execute Branch Continues Domestic Spying Despite Sunset of PAA
blueridge
by blueridge  2-25-2008
The "Protect America Act" expired last Sat, but the White House, complicit with the new AG Mukasey and National Intel Director McConnell (both neocons) says it will continue (law-breaking) domestic spying "for now", along with help from the Telecom fascist corporations under the pretense of defending against "terrorists who want to kill us all" --while there is no evidence of credible threats or attacks, and the Constitution and law is trampled. This is nothing less than Federal Anarchy! Why should citizens obey the law, if the feds and Executive in particular, do not?

Torture not illegal because we don't do it.
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  1-30-2008    11
USA Attorney General says today he doesn't know if waterboarding is legal or not; This is the nations top lawyer. You'd figure he' have more of an opinion than: "I don't know." The AG also says: "We don't torture." This all the more outrageous because video tapes of USA torture/waterboarding were destroyed so they couldn't be evidence. Plus there are all the images of Abu Garaib prison all over the web. !? It's almost beyond words to describe but fortunately the basics will do: The USA Attorney General is deceptive. He is also not honorable, not true to his word. He is now part of the White House plot to cover up the very exsistence or admission of waterboarding. He's smirky. Gads. Our nation's top lawyer is smirky. I wish I could think of other words or phrases to describe this 'disconnect,' this "lack of coherence," in one's presentation, this clearly displayed dislocation between reality and legal charade shell game. Any other expresseion to describe this?

The Rack? Some Think It's For Fun
AtlLiberal

In a clear and unambiguous attempt to protect the administration from the possibility of being charged with war crimes, Mukasey proclaims that he "can't decide" if waterboarding is torture. What a farce. How utterly transparent. Why is there not more outrage concerning this transparent attempt to abet a criminal administration?

Criminal Inquiry of C.I.A. Waterboarding Tapes Destruction set by Justice Department
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  1-2-2008
More: Those officials said the White House lawyers included Alberto R. Gonzales, then the White House counsel and later the attorney general. Mr. Gonzales resigned under pressure on Aug. 27, and Mr. Mukasey succeeded him. Administration critics blamed Mr. Gonzales for carving out positions on detention and interrogation they deemed too permissive. So the actions of Mr. Mukasey, who as a federal judge in New York built a reputation as tough on terrorism, are being closely watched. It remains unclear how various administration officials argued on the matter of the tapes, though one former senior intelligence official familiar with the matter said there had been “vigorous sentiment” among some top White House officials that the tapes should be destroyed. The House Intelligence Committee has ordered Jose A. Rodriguez Jr., the former C.I.A. official who has been described by intelligence officials as having authorized the destruction of the tapes, to appear at a hearing on Jan. 16

Attorney General Mukasey On CIA Videos
merrie
by merrie  12-14-2007
(The Politico) Reps. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas) and Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the chairman and ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, have released the following statement after being informed that the Justice Department has ordered the CIA not to cooperate with the panel's investigation into the destruction of interrogation videos of captured al Qaeda terrorists: “Just two days ago, CIA Director Michael Hayden appeared before our Committee to address the CIA’s destruction of videotapes. In that hearing, he committed to providing materials relevant to our investigation. Earlier today, our staff was notified that the Department of Justice has advised CIA not cooperate with our investigation. “I will ask Attorney General Mukasey -- in public and on the record -- more about the Department’s knowledge of and role in the existence and destruction of these videotapes at the Committee’s next oversight hearing, which I intend to call early next year," said Leahy.
