POPSConnecting Through Dreams This process is especially helpful for departing from destructive habits. Life has certain themes that it plays out. Sometimes those themes operate to our advantage. Sometimes they work against us, especially if we repeat the same patterns or themes, over and over, hoping to get a different result. The process of recapitulation can help us witness these patterns, and once we discern them, we can make more conscious choices. So remain sensitive, observe coincidences during both your daytime living and your nighttime dreaming, and pay special attention to anything that breaks the probability amplitude – the statistical likelihood of a space-time event.

POPSThe Plot Thins . . . Lights, Camera, Lots of Action. Forget the Script. Yana Paskova for The New York Times The pornographic movie industry, in response to the Internet, is focusing even less on narrative arcs these days. Savanna Samson, an actress, says she favors scripts with more dialogue. The actress known as Savanna Samson once relished preparing for a role. “I couldn’t wait to get my next script,” she said. There’s no reason to look at them anymore, she said, because her movies now call almost exclusively for action. Specifically, sex. The pornographic movie industry has long had only a casual interest in plot and dialogue. But moviemakers are focusing even less on narrative arcs these days. Instead, they are filming more short scenes that can be easily uploaded to Web sites and sold in several-minute chunks. “On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”

POPSFreedom without order... Some interesting thoughts... that I tend to agree with. Republicanism seems to rejoice in the abstract: they value "ideas" above their practical implication. While idealism is fine: it must be leavened with pragmatism.

POPSTop 10 John Williams Movie Tunes There is no doubt that John Williams has composed some of the most recognized movie scores of our lifetime. Moviegoers of the last four decades have only to hear a few notes of any of Williams' scores to know the movie. Some of us can even place the scene, characters and describe the action.

POPSDo Rom-Coms Spoil Our Love Lives? Do you think this is true? Is real-life romance a big ol' letdown? Sure, lots of people like the idea of a perfect man or "happily ever after," but does that mean we're all unable to separate fantasy from reality? Also, have you ever had an experience that could have been right out of a romantic movie (think John Cusack holding up a boom box)?

POPSMichael Crichton 1942 - 2008 But what a strange career the man had, from Harvard Medical School to the top of the book and movie charts to Hollywood blockbusters to odd best-selling jeremiads against Japanese businessmen and global warming activists. The consistent themes of his work are the consequences of man's own hubris and a thoroughgoing paranoia. Someone is always coming up with a brilliant notion in Crichton, and it always goes hideously kablooey. Bring dinosaurs back to life? Okay, but they'll escape and gobble you up. Organ transplants? Fine until the medical establishment starts harvesting them for profit. Robots? Forget about the robots: they'll shoot you down ("Westworld") or come after you with knives ("Runaway"). Plastic surgery, biotech implants, chasing tornadoes? All terrible, terrible ideas ("Looker," "The Terminal Man," "Twister").

POPSHAL sings "Daisy" Arthur C Clarke died today. He was the writer of the novel 2001 A Space Odyssey, which which became the Stanley Kubrik classic, about a computer HAL, that went insane, when it was told to lie. This is the scene where Dave has had enough, and HAL is put to sleep. The novel and movie were created in the 1960s, and still hold their own today. Arthur C Clarke wasn't as much a science fiction writer, His work covered many progressive scientific themes, and he was writing and wrote until his death, what could and what may be. Much of which will be. If we give ourselves the chance to advance that far.

POPSCreating Friendly AI Imagine, for a moment, that you walk up and punch an AI in the nose. Does the AI punch back? Perhaps and perhaps not, but punching back will not be instinctive. A sufficiently young AI might stand there and think: "Hm. Someone's fist just bumped into my nose." In a punched human, blood races, adrenaline pumps, the hands form fists, the stance changes, all without conscious attention. For a young AI, focus of attention shifts in response to an unexpected negative event - and that's all.

POPSRow over religious themes in Compass Churches show a lack of confidence in followers whenever something controversial comes out. The churches show no faith in, or trust of, its followers. I remember a baptist group kicking up a fuss about "Life of Brian". To me, this indicates a belief that the followers are an ignorant lot, incapable of intelligent decision making.
