POPS"WOMEN ARE HEROES" post it LARGE "Women Are Heroes" is done by a 25 year-old artist who goes by JR. He photographs women across the world, in countries like Sudan, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Laos, as well as Brazil. Then he prints extreme enlargements of the images, and wallpapers the sides of buildings in the neighborhoods of the women he documents… but then also posts them in a very large format in Western cities. In Brazil, thousands of killings by police are going largely unpunished because of public approval for a perceived crackdown on crime, reports the U.N. envoy, Philip Alston. Clashes with police killed a record 1,260 civilians in Rio de Janeiro state last year. JK's previous project, "Face2Face" made portraits of Palestinians and Israelis doing the same job and posted them face to face, in huge formats, in unavoidable places, on the Israeli and the Palestinian sides. "Face to face" is necessary. Within a few years, JR will come back for "Hand in hand".

POPSMysterious shaking rattles Central Coast this morning "Military aircraft do fly through the area frequently. Even though some do reach supersonic speeds, like the F-22, a low flying aircraft not going at that speed could have also caused minor shaking. A spokesman from Edwards Air Force Base says right now, conditions are ideal to hear a sonic boom or any noise coming from large aircraft. The spokesman adds, winds coming in off the ocean help to carry that sound.

POPSWere There Really Pirates In The Caribbean? The great or classic era of piracy in the Caribbean extends from around 1560 up until the end of the Golden Age of Piracy in the 1730s. The period during which pirates were most successful was from the 1640s until the 1680s. Caribbean piracy arose out of, and mirrored on a smaller scale, the conflicts over trade and colonization among the rival European powers of the time, including England, Spain, Dutch United Provinces, and France. Two of the best-known pirate bases were Tortuga in the 1640s and Port Royal after 1655. One of the last famous pirates of the Caribbean was Cofresí: Roberto Cofresí Ramirez de Arellano (1791-1825). He was put to death for his crimes in Puerto Rico at the Castle of San Felipe del Morro. His romantic legend inspires plays and songs on the island. Piracy was common in this area because the surrounding coastline had many isolated beaches where pirates could land. Direct Quote from Wikipedia article.

POPSA Lost Forest - The Atlantic Forest Many know about the Amazon Rain Forest in Brazil but there is another Forest that has only 8% of it left. If you go to Rio or Sao Paulo you would not believe they still have a forest nearby but close to the mountains there is still some areas almost intact, not sure until when. São Paulo, with its 18 million inhabitants, is the world’s fourth largest urban agglomeration. In 1994, the 1.5 million-hectare São Paulo City Green Belt Reserve was established as part of the UNESCO Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve but the last time I checked that green belt I found only a small area still left. It is called "Reserva do Morro Grande".
