The World's Greatest Aviation Innovations
Mohir
by Mohir  10-5-2008
 9. The flying wing -- Yves Rossy keeps breaking records and defying expectations with his 8-foot-diameter, carbon composite flying wing. Last week he made a successful 13 minute, 125 mph trip across the English Channel. 10. Stealth aircraft -- What's cooler than a plane that can outsmart radar? Because the surfaces of a stealth are designed to absorb radio waves or reflect them away from the receiver, stealth planes can sneak in and sneak out undetected. Too bad they're so expensive: The 21 plane B-2 program cost over $45 billion. 11. Jetway -- Another one most of us don't think about is the long covered walkway the connects our departure gate with our plane. 12. Deicing -- Ice buildup is the cause of many fatal aircraft accidents, which is why applying monopropylene de-icing fluid to wings pre-flight has become standard operating procedure.

Hot New Steampunk Couture!
infopunk
by infopunk  9-19-2008
Steampunk Couture is the result of a beautiful marriage of Neo-Victorian wear and our post-apocalyptic future. "Born wet and wide-eyed as a literary genre near the end of the last century, "steampunk" is just a word encompassing a litany of sins. The flagrant coupling of Victorian aesthetic, and phantastic technology. A dash of swashbuckle, a pinch of pathos, simmer until stirred or disturbed. Haberdashery sprung fully-formed from brandishing bustles, boots, and bodices (or monocles, spats, moustaches,) in shades of sepia, dashes of dun, blinks of black, coils of copper, illums of ivory, and jots of jewel-tone. Motifs meander from gearwheels to jacquard, stopping off at morbid, metallic, or romantic along the way. Accessorize with your favorite protective headwear. Let Kato, artist and craftist, escort you through her vogue's gallery of gamine garb. Tops, bottoms, and side-to-sides fit for adventure aloft

Karadzic's Nation of Murderers
arifsali
by arifsali  7-25-2008    3
It is tempting, in a world supposedly caught in a clash of civilizations, to think that the only way to survive is to have the Kardzics in your corner, fighting to protect people who look like you, talk like you, pray like you. That is certainly what the young Serbian men who burned flags and threw bottles in defense of Karadzic believe. The logic essentially goes like this: “He’s a son-of-a-bitch, but he’s our son-of-a-bitch. And in a world of sons-of-bitches, you better have the toughest son-of-a-bitch in your corner.” That’s misdirected rage talking, not reason. Misdirected rage applauds “our” murderers, believes they are necessary. It not only thinks the clash of civilizations is real, it needs the clash of civilizations to justify support of its murderers.

Oscar Buzz Mounts For Heath Ledger In "The Dark Knight"
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2008    1
Co-star Christian Bale, who plays Batman, was quoted by Contactmusic as saying: "I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award. Residents of Ledger's home town of Perth in Western Australian have found their own way to ensure his legacy lives on, naming a theatre in his honor for his commitment to acting. At a naming ceremony last week, state premier for Western Australia Alan Carpenter said the $87 million (43.8 million pounds), 575-seat theatre was a fitting tribute as Ledger was always supportive of other young actors. "Heath Ledger was totally dedicated to the craft of being an actor and that's what made him successful," Carpenter told local reporters. "I think what we're doing is continuing that support for young people who want to make a career in the arts and acting, stage and in film, whatever it happens to be.

The Unknown Woman of the Seine

by abailart  4-2-2008
<<<The face of the unknown woman was used for the head of the first aid mannequin Rescue Annie. It was created by Peter Safar and Asmund Laerdal in 1958 and was used starting in 1960 in numerous CPR courses. Therefore, the face has been called by some "the most kissed face" of all time.>>>

Ghoulish ABCs
boliyou
by boliyou  12-17-2007
Edward Gorey's nursery rhyme, with appropriately morbid illustrations, is a ghastly alternative to the usual: A is for Amy who fell down the stairs. B is for Basil assaulted by bears. Definitely not for the warm-and-fuzzy types, but amusing and well-illustrated, nevertheless. Complete with Spanish translation. Link via Edward Nudelman
