Everything he touches...
earnric
by earnric  7-22-2008
Our president that is... I am for the ethical treatment of prisoners: no matter who they are or what they've done. Our morality doesn't depend on the actions of others (no matter how henous). That's part of the very definition of morality. But our "moral" president has likely made it difficult, if not impossible to prosecute some of these people... Some that are likely a real threat. Chock it up to incompetence... once again.

The Long March
willhelm
by willhelm  7-20-2008
"much of the wacky, upside-down, right-is-wrong, black-is-white stuff we see in the news these days is directly or indirectly inspired by Gramsci: the attacks on Christianity, the family, individual freedom, morality and moral judgements; multiculturalism; the cult of victimhood, "tolerance," political correctness, the replacement of the roles of family, religion, individual responsibility and choice with government rules, laws, and regs; the expansion of the State and the Welfare State and the Nanny State; anti-tradition, anti-capitalism, anti-success, anti-nationalism, anti-Americanism and anti-Westernism, etc - all the stuff that makes me echo Bob Grant with "It's sick out there, and getting sicker." I am sure Antonio never anticipated that a Green movement would emerge to become an ally of the slow, incrementalist and thus less-alarming Gramscian revolution."

A family under siege
RaiseClip
by RaiseClip  7-18-2008
What religion do these people practice that they would do this with impunity to innocent people? What is the true name of their evil cult? Yet they want the whole world to whine and cry crocodile tears when even a single one among their ranks of ruthless soldiers are captured or a single hair of their head is touched. Something is wrong - really wrong with the morality of these creatures.

The Abomination that causes destruction?
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  7-14-2008
Fornication is condemned in the bible along with homosexuality. If the PCUSA is no longer going to stand for biblical principles then they no longer need to be supported by members who do not support such iniquity. It is time for someone to take a whip to the houses of prostitution being set up in the once reformed church house. Jdg 2:11 (GW) The people of Israel did what the Lord considered evil. They began to serve other gods—the Baals. 12 The Israelites abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors, the God who brought them out of Egypt. They followed the other gods of the people around them. They worshiped these gods, and that made the Lord angry. 13 They abandoned the Lord to serve the god Baal and the goddess Astarte. 14 So the Lord became angry with the people of Israel. He handed them over to people who robbed them. He also used their enemies around them to defeat them. They could no longer stand up against their enemies.

A Bad Law
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-14-2008    4
The recurrence of offense by rapists and pedophiles is well documented. But what about the multitude of teens that are branded with the scarlet letter of sex offender? The present laws make no distinction between a rapist and an adolescent experimenting with sex. Yet the consequences are the same regardless of the "crime". This is foolhardy and a tremendous waste of taxpayer money to say nothing of the devastating consequences of teens being caught with their pants down. What began as a law to protect children has turned children into lifelong pariahs and that is not right.

Sentient Beings Protected
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-14-2008
I'd say it's high time that we got off our high horse and recognized other sentient beings that we share the earth with and grant them limited rights such as freedom from torture. Ethically, it is the right thing to do. In part, we can blame religion for this ethical blunder.

US Afghan raid 'killed civilians'
RaiseClip

They kill & kill & kill. Then lie & lie & lie ... until the truth surfaces which is NEVER NEVER NEVER the story these professional liars, murderers and torturers tell. They are the international cowards of the world killing the innocent with impunity. Oh sure, when - and ONLY when their asses are exposed, they'll always issue an apology as if they didn't intend to murder babies women, children, the elderly and the innocent. Their morality is at the level of the very bottom of a cesspool full of shit and slime.

Augustine and the relationship of the two cities in law
willhelm
by willhelm  7-8-2008    2
--Christopher Neiswonger "But this confusion of proper ends toward merely pragmatic or “proximate” goals is ordained by God, so that there will be some semblance of peace on the Earth during this time when there are two worlds grinding against each other. A city of God and a city of man. We use the same Law but to a different final end."

Why We're All Moral Hypocrites
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-8-2008    5
The researchers then "constrained cognition" by asking subjects to memorize long strings of numbers. In this greatly distracted state, subjects became impartial. They thought their own transgressions were just as terrible as those of others. This suggests that we are intuitively moral beings, but "when we are given time to think about it, we construct arguments about why what we did wasn’t that bad,"

Christians & Muslims beleive god wants you to marry only virgins...
earnric
by earnric  6-27-2008
Or you have to at least believe he USED to require it... cuz there are many passages in the old testament that indicate you should stone your wife if you find out she's not a virgin on her wedding night... I guess god changes his morality based on the age however - since we're not supposed to do this anymore right?

Juan Cole: MANY TORTURED DETAINEES INNOCENT!

Why habeas corpus is Morality 101: "prisoners were routinely abused even after it became clear that they had no intelligence value" We have no right to imprison and torture innocent people. Apparently, some previously innocent prisoners were so radicalized by US torture that they took up arms after being released.

Obama, Religion and the Public Square
merrie
by merrie  6-10-2008
Yet there is more to Mr. Obama and religion than the recent headlines might suggest. Here is how he put it: "Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square. Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King – indeed, the majority of great reformers in American history – were not only motivated by faith but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause. To say that men and women should not inject their 'personal morality' into public policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition." In his now-famous address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association in 1960, John Kennedy called for "an America where the separation of church and state is absolute." He went on to state that a president's faith should be "his own private affair."
