POPSRunning the Numbers An American Self-Portrait This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. Employing themes such as the near versus the far, and the one versus the many, I hope to raise some questions about the roles and responsibililties of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming. ~chris jordan, Seattle, 2008

POPSAmericans whinge about proposed Internet bandwidth cap For the first time ever, it seems American ISPs are thinking of implementing bandwidth caps to curtail Internet usage, and many are up in arms about it. But Comcast's mooted 250 Gig cap seems infinitely generous compared with Telkom's 3 Gig monthly maximum, and anything else one has to pay extra for.

POPSComcast to cap online use The cap will be set at 250gb. If you go over that, you get a courtesy call from Comcast as a first warning. The second time that you go over, your account will be immediately suspended for an entire calendar year. People that watch movies or video's online are going to be hit hard because you can go over your daily limit in minutes. And don't forget that companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft and others are offering online (cloud) storage. Some applications such as Google's http://docs.google.com/ are online and would be completely inaccessible to small business's or home offices. Plus there are X-box, Playstation, Nintendo and many other consumer boxes that require the internet to access online games, calenders, address books, and even clocks.

POPSComcast's Usage Cap: What Will It Mean To You? Users’ monthly fee are tied to their broadband usage, which is capped at 5 Gigabytes to 40 Gigabytes. I bet that if you start tracking your broadband usage, with software listed here, you’ll be unpleasantly surprised. The GigaOM 250 GB Challenge & 5 Tools To Monitor Your Bandwidth Consumption http://gigaom.com/2008/08/29/the-gigaom-250-gb-challenge/ AT&T and Verizon may soon follow in Time Warner’s footsteps, say analysts. I am still waiting for comments from both companies. Home broadband providers are increasingly competing with a slew of new, wireless broadband carriers like Clearwire. With consumers having more choices about which broadband provider to go with, Comcast and others simply can’t afford to tighten their usage caps too much – or to keep them at the current levels for long.

POPSA Giant Step Back for Broadband Internet High speed internet is a luxury we've taken forgranted, now that our unlimited bandwidth stands to be capped it is sad to think of all the technologies we used to enjoy that will be taken away from us.

POPSGlobal Warming Whiners $1,120 per month and the most she can do is put up a clothesline? What else is she doing, removing all the Glade plug-ins throughout the house b/c of their "high" energy usage? I guess she did get something for Mr. Gore: Whine about Americans using too much energy while gulping as big as possible yourself. Why should you cut back when you can get others to do it instead? Symbolism over substance. The mindset of modern liberalism.

POPSComcast's Abuse of Its Monopoly Power Comcast disconnected a user's internet connection for violating a fuzzy monthly download policy (he claims his excessive usage was probably caused by some sort of malware) and without any other providers in his area, he is left without a broadband connection for at least a year. Joseph Heller would have had a field day with the conversation between Comcast and his wife. He also speculates that Comcast is culling the high-bandwidth users to increase profits.
