Fresh water lakes in the heart of the Sahara Desert
amgumen
by amgumen  12-9-2009
The reason for the apparent paradox—fresh water lakes in the heart of the desert—is that fresh water from a very large aquifer reaches the surface in the Ounianga Depression. The aquifer is large enough to keep supplying the small lakes with water despite the high evaporation rate. Mats of floating reeds also reduce the evaporation in places. The lakes form a hydrological system that is unique in the Sahara Desert. The aquifer was charged with fresh water and the original lake evolved during the African Humid Period (about 14,800 to 5,500 years ago), when the West African summer monsoon was stronger than it is today. Associated southerly winds brought Atlantic moisture well north of modern limits, producing sufficient rainfall in the central Sahara to foster an almost complete savanna vegetation cover.

Now it is the New Scientist saying that the best we can expect is a collapse of civilisation. This model assumes a 4 C increase. Today I clipped the latest predictions indicating a 6.3 C degree increase. See http://openintelligence.amplify.com/2009/10/05/new-analysis-brings-dire-forecast-of-63-degree-temperature-increase/.

Seas 'threaten 20m in Bangladesh'
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-7-2009
Four months after the cyclone, the sea defences are still breached and the island floods with every high tide. Map and satelite view of Gabura Island The chairman of the Gabura Island "union" or council, Shofiul Ajam Lenin, is calling for the embankments to be far higher. "If the current design is not changed then not only my union, but the other unions as well will not exist." The flooding has ruined the island's freshwater supplies and hygiene in the camp is poor. Among those living in tents on a narrow strip of high ground is Asma Khatun, a 25-year-old widow, who is now eager to leave. "I think it is not possible to live in this country any longer. We have to move to other countries. "We can't live here just by drinking this water. It is not possible to live here."

In the northern Philippines, the typhoon and lingering monsoon rains left 21 people dead and seven others missing in landslides and floodwaters. Xinhua said three fishermen died and 26 others were missing from Tropical Storm Goni, which hit Guangdong on Wednesday but weakened into a tropical depression by Sunday. Helicopters and ships were searching for the missing crew.

US Navy warns of increased pirate activity
smellydiaper
by smellydiaper  7-27-2009
Myself i can't understand it how nations permit it. They are there to do harm to you same as being kidnapped. You can see them coming. I now if i saw a kidnapper coming after me i would grab my 9mm and start firing.. Enough of the morality of it. Put security on all vessels, cost hell of a lot less then millions you pay in ransome to these thugs. Wait until they get right up along side of you and mow em down with machine guns. Better yet arms with short range rockets and blow them out of the water. After 2 or 3 incidents like this they would go back to herding sheep like they use to do. Have pity on them ? no not me. not in any shape. They want to resort to terror.... time to draw the line.

14,000km Dragonfly Migration Discovered
chestnut501

“There are earlier records of swarms of dragonflies flying out to sea, and at sea. But it was always assumed that those dragonflies were doomed. Which says rather more about our earth-bound lack of imagination than it does about the globe skimmers’ extraordinary flying abilities.”

35 Dead as Lightning Strikes
merrie
by merrie  6-29-2009    3
Globally, about 100,000 people are injured and 10,000 people killed by lightning - more than the number killed by floods, hurricanes or tornadoes - the British weather bureau, the Met Office, says. The US National Weather Service says the odds of a person being struck by lightning are one in 5000. Jaswant Wajisinh Baria, a farmer, was sleeping under a tree when a bolt of lightning struck his thatched house, killing him instantly, the Indian Express reported. His wife, Sumitra, suffered burns at several places and needed treatment, while Baria’s three-year-old buffalo was also killed, the paper said. In the last two years, about 60 people have died from lightning strikes each year in the state of Jharkhand alone. In the state of Orissa, about 250 people lost their lives to lightning each year, and the "death roll" was rising, Padmanabha Behera, under-secretary with the office of Special Relief Commissioner, told The Hindu.

continues: Moken children learn how to swim before they can walk. The Moken can plunge to depths of 75 feet without any life support gear and can also lower their heart rates in order to hold their breaths for twice as long as other humans. And that’s not all: Swedish scientist Anna Gislen also found that Moken children have the power to constrict their pupils to tiny pinpoints when they’re in the water, enabling them to sharpen their sight and see much better underwater than the rest of us.
