POPSEarly Human Ancestors Not Like Chimps When Darwin first published “Origin of Species” and later “Descent of Man,” detractors declared that they “didn’t come from monkeys.” One cartoon of the day (late 1800s) showed Darwin as an ape. I guess it now looks like apes may have descended from US!

POPSphoto: Grief More: After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000 Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group’s alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee… Sanaga-Yong was founded in 1999 by veterinarian Sheri Speede (pictured at right, cradling Dorothy’s head; at left is center employee Assou Felix). Operated by IDA-Africa, an NGO, it’s home to 62 chimps who reside in spacious, forested enclosures.

POPSWant a brain that bounces back like a super ball? This is looking really good for my running friends - while they may be killing their knees and hips, they are keeping their brains young! (I walk and occasionally job 15 miles a day) One caveat though - the test was done on rhesus monkeys. So if you run a lot, have slightly longer arms than the rest of us and...

POPS‘Leopard Behind You!’ A human in a blue shirt is announced differently from a human in a yellow shirt. In and of itself, it’s not surprising that the sounds animals make are not just noise, or a reflection of the state an animal’s in (scared, happy and so on). But the subtlety of the calls — the full amount of meaning they contain — is only now being appreciated. Animals of one species often respond to the alarms of another. In a small way, it’s like those childrens’ stories that have rats talking to toads, or elephants arguing with ostriches. Predators sometimes respond too. After all, alarm calls don’t just let other animals know there’s danger in the area. They can also let a predator know that it’s been seen. Ambush predators, like leopards, often give up and go away once an alarm has been sounded. <<

POPSThe Lure of Bette Davis Eyes Two scientists from the University of Bremen have found that groups of brain cells within the temporal lobe of macaque monkeys, are not only dedicated to recognizing facial features, but each cell is responsible for specific sub-sets of facial features, like eye size.

POPSWhat Can I Do in Barbados? To see all beautiful things in Barbados, it would mean years of exploration! One could also ask...do you NEED to do anything? I guess you do! That is why you simply have to choose...and still remember to leave time in your planning for just being there...

POPSLawsuit Over Research Monkeys Mistreatment The same old story. "Yes you did". "No I didn't". As a scientist in research myself (Bio-Chem), I know all too well what goes on in those labs, And I am glad to see someone is investigating these horrific atrocities committed upon these innocent creatures in the name of scientific research. There is nothing scientific about it. It is just maiming and torture under the disguise of surgery. I find this sort of thing absolutely disgusting. There is a related story on the same page. Click on the link to view that and the accompanying video. I think what irritated me in the first place was that this is going on in my home town, and is related to my line of work. These methods are becoming more antiquated as we progress further into the 21st century.

POPSReturn Of The Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys The head of the French military said Thursday that military intervention is no longer a viable option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability. French chief-of-staff Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin said following a speech that that he believes a military operation would be too risky. "It is very difficult to plan a military operation in Iran, because we are not sure in one shot to be able to solve a problem and if you fail in one shot, it is a catastrophe," he said in English. "I don't think at this stage a military option is still available." Georgelin was answering a question after a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington on France's new relationship with NATO and stressed that the comment was his opinion. Georgelin was in the United States to attend a ceremony Wednesday as French Gen. Stephane Abrial became the first non-American officer to permanently fill a NATO command post.
