Tableau De L'Histoire Universelle depuis la Creation jusqu'a ce jour
HobbeLink
by HobbeLink  Today 5:18 AM    1
This is a fold-out print depicting all of human history from the time of creation (4693 BC = Adam & Eve; the great flood = 3300 BC) up to the date of publication (1858 by Eug. Pick, Paris). Vignettes of historically significant people, places and buildings etc are arranged along the borders. This audacious document mirrors the style of a similar graphical print by Colton from 1842 and is in the same ballpark as an 1836 chart by Emma Willard (see here). The designer has employed something of a metaphorical display choice: civilisations are presented as a series of rivers -- the widths likely imply the comparative population level of each group versus the world's population -- which 'flow' down through history.

California Businesses Buzzing With Solar Energy Innovations
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  12-28-2009
In the area of green technology, California has a natural leadership role to play, and it appears that a few companies are taking leadership stands in the area of solar energy. The first such company is Solar Reserve, Santa Monica, C. Solar Reserve has a 25 year contract to supply energy to about 75,000 homes by using solar radiation-catching mirrors to heat molten salt to over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. I have cliped a diagram of the system used by Solar Reserve below, which is one I had not heard of. Another company is First Solar, Blythe, CA. On December 21, 2009, First Solar opened the largest photovoltaic power station in California, which the company plans to replicate in order to expand its utility business. I have clipped a picture of the solar panels being installed under the sweltering heat of California's desert climate. The third company is Solyndra, Fremont, CA, which has recently filed to go public in order to raise $300 million for its specially-designed, fl

China’s Asset Bubble
kmcolo
by kmcolo  12-21-2009
It is a matter of time. What will it mean to the Chinese Government? Will it buckle under the weight of massive dissatisfaction? Or will it mean some dark years for the Chinese people? What will it mean to the US Dollar? Will China unload the dollar thus massively devaluing the currency in order to keep their economy afloat? But would they if they are so dependent on foreign trade? And what will it mean to the world economy. Will the world economy be firm enough to absorb Chinese economic contraction? So far, China's economy has been one of the few bright spots. If the world economy is not strong enough China's asset bubble burst may lead to another global recession.

Researcher: NASA Hiding Climate Data
merrie
by merrie  12-6-2009    1
NASA later changed that data again, and now 1998 and 2006 are tied for first, with 1934 slightly cooler. Mr. Horner, a noted global warming skeptic and author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism, wants a look at the data and the discussions that went into those changes. He said he's given the agency until the end of the year to comply or else he'll sue to compel the information's release. His fight mirrors one in Europe that has sprung up over the the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit in the UK after thousands of e-mails from the center were obtained and appear to show researchers shaving their data to make it conform to their expectation, and show efforts to try to drive global warming skeptics out of the conversation. The center's chief has stepped down pending an investigation into the e-mails. The center has also had to acknowledge in response to a freedom of information request under British law that it tossed out

These moving butterfly figurines come with a thin 6 foot power cord and use so little power they can be run continuously for pennies per week with out getting hot or becoming a fire hazard. While operating they make no noise whatsoever and provide an allurement that keeps people fascinated and guessing whether they are real or not. The butterfly figurine's body has a hole running through it that you can easily put a safety-pin through for attaching it. You can easily secure and display these lightweight sculptures virtually anywhere: on lamp shades, table tops, water fountains, computers, television sets, high above baby cribs, on headboards, cabinet tops, floral displays, mirrors, walls or basically anywhere you let your imagination go. Monarch Butterfly Figurine wing dimensions are 5 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.

Korean Translators Teach Korean Handicrafts
marketingtranslator
by marketingtranslator  11-20-2009
Kim Yung, a Korean translator by trade, is currently teaching a course on Korean handicrafts at the University of Illinois. He says that Korean metalwork started around 1000 B.C.- 700 B.C. Metalwork was generally used to make spears, knives and other tools that tended to be used for religious rituals. Some of the religious symbols included geometric designs, bronze mirrors, vessels made of bronze with themes of agriculture, assorted bells of various sizes and shapes. Many of the vessels have carvings on the backs, like birds in trees or farm scenes. Most of these metal objects were found in ancient tombs and caves in the 4th and 5th centuries AD throughout modern day Korea. The techniques used to decorate the metal were piercing, inlay and buffing.

Pages, Costs, and Agencies Added To The Obama/Pelosi Health Care Behemoth
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2009
“Additionally, this bill cuts critical Medicare and Medicaid funding by $628 billion, accounts for nearly $1.2 trillion in tax and fee increases and will explode the scope of government by putting the nation’s health care system in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. The $3 trillion price tag defies common sense " we simply cannot add all this new spending to the government rolls and claim to control the deficit. “If we continue to pile more and more debt on the next generation, they will never be able to get out from under it. The health care system needs reform, but this massive expansion of government, financed by our children and grandchildren, is the wrong way to proceed.” And listen…this is what our government believes will be the cost. But look at programs our government has run historically and you find decades of added costs and overruns that our forced onto the taxpayer. Delta Airzound Bike Horn
Lexica
by Lexica  11-2-2009
More, from the comments: Easily the most useful gadget I've ever bought for my bike. Commuting to and from school in NYC, it sees daily use, especially since a good number of pedestrians cross against the light, or in the middle of the street without looking for whats coming first, and a lot of drivers have a bad habit of checking their mirrors after they've already started turning. Also extremely effective at clearing pigeons on the road, which aren't always afraid of people. The only problem that I've had with it is that in dusty conditions, dirt can find its way inside and prevent the diaphragm from vibrating properly, which is most likely the problem that Narwhal was having. But this is why the cover over the diaphragm can be unscrewed and the dirt cleaned out. I usually have to do that after about a month of normal use.

Death of a DSLR? Phooey!
bookchick49
by bookchick49  11-1-2009    6
Author predicts the death of the DSLR based on historical events with cameras. In my opinion, many SLR users did not give up the SLR for a pocket 110. I hardly see a DSLR user giving in totally to a rangefinder or (point and shoot) camera regardless of its upgraded features. I will say however, that the article sheds a new light for me on a question that I've had. As a SLR and DSLR user, I've been wondering why Nikon (specifically) has chosen to upgrade their 10 and 12 mp cameras (and with video) rather than come out with a new camera with say... 15mp. There are point and shoots out now that are capable of 12mp at a price in the same neighborhood as a DSLR with 10mp. It's an uneasy feeling waiting for that 15mp DSLR and watching everything around it 'upgraded' for image quality. Is Nikon trying to appease the masses and draw in crowds of people to DSLR by offering their old flagships as new flagships with video capabilities? Thereby keeping the DSLR alive? If so, than w

Cash for Clubbers
kareval
by kareval  10-28-2009    1
The golf-cart boom has followed an IRS ruling that golf carts qualify for the electric-car credit as long as they are also road worthy. These qualifying golf carts are essentially the same as normal golf carts save for adding some safety features, such as side and rearview mirrors and three-point seat belts. They typically can go 15 to 25 miles per hour. In South Carolina, sales of these carts have been soaring as dealerships alert customers to Uncle Sam's giveaway. "The Golf Cart Man" in the Villages of Lady Lake, Florida is running a banner online ad that declares: "GET A FREE GOLF CART. Or make $2,000 doing absolutely nothing!"

Marin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able
Lexica
by Lexica  10-16-2009
To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

Chairman Max Baucus' Big "Compromise" Would Make Matters Worse
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2009
There's more: Baucus' plan was supposed to be the moderate alternative, simply because it doesn't include a government-run insurance plan. But the "co-ops" it calls for instead are almost the same thing. Anyway, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid still insists that the "public option" will be included in any bill voted on by the full Senate. Finally, much of the bill for ObamaCare would be paid for with cuts to Medicare. Seniors will love that. (Not.) As we've said before, Obama and his Democratic pals on Capitol Hill are chasing radical dreams to take over a huge swath of the economy -- a project that would take a heavy toll on jobs, restrict patients' and doctors' choices and leave health care in worse shape. As the plan wends its way through Congress, it sure isn't getting much better.

Why "but it will confuse the children" is an obnoxious excuse for discrimination
Lexica
by Lexica  10-7-2009
As the post points out, ou know what else confuses kids? Everything: Time zones. Books without pictures. Cargo pants. Certain hair colors. Jello molds. The magic trick with the quarter behind the ear. Mirrors. Mentadent toothpaste dispensers. Everything confuses kids, because they're kids. So "Will it confuse kids?" is probably not the best litmus test for, well, anything besides toys and Spongebob plotlines (and even then, there's a lot of leeway).

Masters of illusion: The great management consultancy swindle
Socratoad
by Socratoad  9-29-2009
The more I thought about it, the grander it seemed. The next morning, I sent out 10 CVs. One ended up in the hands of the founding partner of a small and enlightened consultancy firm based in New York. I landed the job by providing a credible response to this question: How many pubs are there in Great Britain? The purpose of that question, I realised after the interview, was to see how easily I could talk about a subject of which I knew almost nothing, on the basis of facts that were almost entirely fictional. It was an excellent introduction to management consulting.
