POPSLeave something beautiful On another blog, I read where a mom and her children would write lovely things on paper and leave them for strangers to find. They would tuck them into places where finding them would be a surprise as much as what was written on them.

POPSCheri Huber: The cycle of emotional response
From American Zen teacher Cheri Huber. More: There’s nothing inherently good or bad about any of this, explains Huber. It’s just the way life happens. The hitch, she says, is that most of us have been conditioned to spend the vast majority of our active time and energy working exclusively in the final three steps. Acceptance is what teaches us to more masterfully observe the first two.… When we are not in a place of acceptance, explains Huber, our experience goes something like this: We feel a desire; we act; we develop some type of story about what happened, and generally, we find ourselves right back where we started – confronted with the same (or a very similar) desire.… "The point is not to try to judge or change or stop the cycle at any particular point," she clarifies. "It’s just to look at it and go, ‘Okay, what’s that about?’ The desire, the action, the story we tell ourselves afterward – all of it has to be ‘okay’ before any of it can change on a deep level."[/

POPSThe Things We Remember Outstanding. Familiarity is a double-edged sword: It’s comfortable, but it can also be boring. Novel experiences combat the dull edge of routine and make for enduring, positive memories... Make a habit of really listening to each other’s stories... Giving over your full attention conveys love and respect and strengthens family bonds. Recency. We also tend to remember events and experiences that happened most recently, so it’s wise to bring special attention to the last interactions we have with family each day. Close the day with your family just as you started it: with loving words and sweet sentiments. Personal Association. We all want to be appreciated for our uniqueness. Recognizing and celebrating each family member’s individuality fosters feelings of connection and intimacy. With mindfulness and a willingness to shift our behaviors to play to the power of memory, we can create our own rituals to bring more intimacy to our closest relationships.

POPSThe Pain of Avoidance Why do we run from unpleasant thoughts and feelings? We willingly bear with the pain of an immunization shot because we "know" it's good for us and the pain will pass. Can we similarly deal with emotional pain the way we would the pain of a needle?

POPSPower of Negative Thinking? An interesting article that reflects a basis premise of mindfulness and other modern therapeutic approaches: the more we fight the demon, the bigger it becomes. So let's just sit with it, instead of acting on the urge to confront, challenge, and change it.

POPSBecoming Mindful About Feelings This is an excerpt from my blog post of a casual conversation between a colleague (C) and myself (M). Wonderfully therapeutic, and captures beautifully what being mindful is about.

POPSDistraction is a human right! As I’m trying to devote my attention exclusively to one single task – writing an article – for an entire week, I suddenly realize that the absence of distraction equals some kind of mental imprisonment.

POPSMeditation Prevents Relapse In Depression... Studies have found that meditation can help prevent relapse in people who have had three or more episodes of depression. There is evidence that meditation has distinct effects on the brain. In one study, researchers measured brain electrical activity before, immediately after, and four months after a two-month course in mindfulness meditation. They found persistent increased activity on the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with joyful and serene emotions.

POPSBook Review: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle In his book, The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle has found a way to express in simple terms, one of the most difficult to understand concepts for the modern psyche. Although great teachers and masters have expressed the same views before, Tolle says it in plain, clear language that anyone can grasp.
