Is This Bike Coming or Going?
speerclan
by speerclan  12-29-2009
This story, about an odd cycling couple is pretty. And even more interesting is this customer built bike they ride around on. When you read the notes you'll understand why the rider in the back doesn't mind being in the back. I also like the discussion about the solar panel that also acts as a roof shade on hot days. Talk about multi-tasking. It's a pretty cool story, worth the read.

In Crazy American Dictatorship Prediction News
merrie
by merrie  10-1-2009    1
He was the most intelligent person we’ve had in that position for a long time. But he’s inexperienced … “ “Most intelligent for a long time” seems like a bit of stretch. Even so, old codgers, if they know nothing else, usually know that having intelligence without experience is like knowing how roller skates work without ever having been on them. That’s why they’re always grousing about young whippersnappers. Vidal’s example shows it’s never too late to learn from your mistakes, though when you read on, you’ll see he hasn’t. Meanwhile, in other crazy American dictatorship predictions, there’s this guy on the right side of the aisle who also thinks U.S. military officers will be staging a coup soon. The column by John L. Perry, who I managed to avoid encountering before he lost his mind, got yanked by NewsMax but most of it is here at The Moderate Voice. http://themoderatevoice.com/48019/newsmax-calls-for-a-military-coup-in-u-s/

By imagining many possible worlds fiction can chang our Minds
einbar
by einbar  9-3-2009    2
"For more than two thousand years people have insisted that reading fiction is good for bookyou. Aristotle claimed that poetry—he meant the epics of Homer and the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, which we would now call fiction—is a more serious business than history. History, he argued, tells us only what has happened, whereas fiction tells us what can happen, which can stretch our moral imaginations and give us insights into ourselves and other people. This is a strong argument for schools to continue to focus on the literary arts, not just history, science, and social studies. But is the idea of fiction being good for you merely wishful thinking?'

State rep, suffering from cancer, sponsors medical marijuana bill
ofcapri
by ofcapri  2-10-2009
"It was scary, because when I had the strength to stand up and look at myself in the mirror, I looked like somebody out of Auschwitz," Merrick said. A friend suggested she try smoking marijuana to calm her body. She did - just one puff, she said. Then, she asked her husband for a drink of nut brown beer. He bought some, she said, and poured it into a tiny glass. "And it stayed down, and it felt good," Merrick said. "It was the first time that I had some kind of relief to my system." It was illegal. But to her mind, it was a medical necessity.

'Is it possible to shift from a fixed mind-set to a growth mind-set? Absolutely, according to Ms. Dweck. But, “it’s not easy to just let go of something that has felt like your self for many years,” she writes. Still, she says, “nothing is better than seeing people find their way to things they value.”

Bush: I Care About Bin Laden Again
cptenaud
by cptenaud  6-18-2008    4
It took a presidential election to change his mind on bin Laden, which has has moved from viciously wanted to casually forgotten and back again. It didn't take 390 Taliban prisoners being freed in a suicide attack to get Afghanistan back in the news, or a 50% uptick in violence in the U.S. controlled southern region. It was simply a few words from the guy on his way out to find the glaring asterik of his presidency somewhere in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

Can You Become a Creature of New Habits?
zizzy
by zizzy  5-10-2008    1
“I apprentice myself to someone when I want to learn something new or develop a new habit,” .... “Other people read a book about it or take a course. If you have a pathway to learning, use it because that’s going to be easier than creating an entirely new pathway in your brain.” ... three zones of existence: comfort, stretch and stress. Comfort is the realm of existing habit. Stress occurs when a challenge is so far beyond current experience as to be overwhelming. It’s that stretch zone in the middle — activities that feel a bit awkward and unfamiliar — where true change occurs. “Getting into the stretch zone is good for you .. “It helps keep your brain healthy ... unless we continue to learn new things, which challenges our brains to create new pathways, they literally begin to atrophy, which may result in dementia, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases.

The Nose 'Knows' and More Memory Exercises
merrie
by merrie  10-9-2007
Have a boss who likes to give pop quizzes after he talks for two hours? Keep your mind focused during meetings by meditating beforehand. Studies show it's a great way to boost your attention span -- and "attention is the main door to memory," says Sonia Lupien, Ph.D., director of the Center for Studies on Human Stress at the Douglas Institute in Montreal, Canada. Never meditated before? Sit or lie on the floor in a quiet room in a comfortable position, rest both hands on your stomach, and breathe deeply, focusing on the silence. Try to meditate for at least 10 minutes daily.

What shape do you get when you try to make a Möbius Band from a non-stretchy material?
Rasmus
by Rasmus  8-1-2007
The researchers originally became interested in the problem while trying to understand the shapes that DNA takes as it twists. Like paper, DNA won't stretch. Like a metal strip, it is stiff and resists bending. The Möbius band served as a simplified model that allowed them to develop their technique for calculating possible DNA shapes.
