Legalized Bribery in American Politics
sahara
by sahara  10-1-2009    1
Just one in a thousand adult Americans contributed $1,000 or more to any candidate in the last election, yet candidates for the 2004 presidential nomination raised more than 80 percent of their individual investments from these elites. In other words, with regard to using money to influence presidential candidates, 0.1% of Americans account for 80% of the influence. 2300 energy companies lobbied Congress between 1998 and 2004, with $984 million paid for lobbyists. Why pay a lobbyist $300,000? Because it’s a great investment, of course. Does anyone believe the legal fiction that the purpose of a lobbyist is to educate politicians on the issues? Of course not. Those huge bucks are paid out for skilled middle-men and women to discreetly (or not so discreetly) convey the message that a politician will be handsomely rewarded for screwing over his or her constituents in favor of the lobbyist’s employer.

A Lottery Winning Tale Of Easy Come Easy Go

Greed is in us all, young and old. Fortunately for most of us this monster that lives within our brain cells usually doesn't get much of a chance to rear its ugly head. Now and then it will give you a poke when a cashier gives you too much change and you remain silent or you find a thingamajig tucked in the corner of your shopping cart after leaving the store, knowing it did not get a UPC scan and you take it with you anyway. The sad part of coming into a large sum of money is that the “ME” in us grows humongous and you can't spend the bankroll fast enough to accumulate all those baubles and doodads you believe poor little ole you have done without for so long. The Graying of Abortionists
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  6-16-2009
"Of course Salon.com says this is because of anti-abortion "terrorism" like the murder of Dr. Tiller last week. But I'm pretty sure this drop off didn't start last Sunday. And what this actually shows is that societal pressures are working. So that's the good news. The bad news is that abortion is a multi-million dollar industry and as long as they're paying, some shell of a human with an online medical degree will step up and agree to rip babies limb from limb for money. And when these hacks hurt women with botched abortions Salon.com, I'm sure, will blame you. That's right. You for stigmatizing abortion and making it so difficult to fill those spots. "

“Take this job and shove it!”
merrie
by merrie  3-26-2009    1
No waitress, factory worker, clerk or bottle washer ever got to deliver a “Take this job and shove it!” like that. Did any country western star ever even think of writing that one? Boo hoo. That’s for the rest of us, because Jake, his boss Edward Libby, these nameless credit-default swap electricians … the ones Jake says shafted us when he was honestly raking in a couple million a year as a financial products plumber in that crappy house … and all the pols and bureaucratic building inspectors who stood by, have put us in a position where we have to pay people who made obscene amounts of money on this screwed-up system even more obscene amounts of money to unscrew it. If in fact that is what they are doing, a point about which I am not confident. I bet we can fly in a planeload of financial brainiacs from Bangalore at a fraction of Jake’s price. Outsourcing Wall Street to India. That’d get their attention.

Feds Going to ‘Save’ us with Stimulus Package

Let's see that comes to $729 billion. Hmmm, I wonder where the other $58 billion is going. I’m cure Obama’s Gurus have it under control. So, let’s not sit on the sidelines holding our breath for this financial wizardry to cure our woes, go out and spend your $400 bucks like the ‘gift’ it is meant to be. We’ll worry about how we’re going to pay for it tomorrow. After all, we’re carrying on and old American tradition.

Smoking Gun: Caller Explains Stimulus As Obama Democratic Patronage System!
merrie
by merrie  2-10-2009    3
So they're gonna hold some back and that's where... the real bucks will be spent, right up close to the election. ... It's not a stimulus package, it's not pork! It's a job patronage system ... there's gonna be more working for the Democrats in a patronage system than the United States Army... And the jobs are gonna be camouflaged in a million different ways, whether you're workin' for the city, or workin' for the state, but when the election comes around, you're gonna be obligated to go out and get that vote... ...like ACORN, except the jobs will be larger scale. I just wanted to say that, because I was really depressed when they told me, because I really thought they'd be different. If I've done nothing else in my life, I've informed what that bill really is... it's a job patronage system. Best Way To Ensure Catastrophe Is To “Act Now”
merrie
by merrie  2-9-2009    1
Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, and Harry Reid. Appearing on The Rush Limbaugh Show last week, I got a little muddled over two adjoining newspaper clippings—one on the stimulus, the other on those octuplets in California — and for a brief moment the two stories converged. Everyone’s hammering that mom—she’s divorced, unemployed, living in a small house with parents who have a million bucks’ worth of debt, and she’s already got six kids. So she has in vitro fertilization to have eight more. But isn’t that exactly what the Feds have done? Last fall, they gave birth to an $850 billion bailout they couldn’t afford and didn’t have enough time to keep an eye on, and now four months later they’re going to do it all over again, but this time they want trillionuplets. Barney and Nancy represent the in vitro fertilization of the federal budget. And it’s the taxpayers who’ll get stuck with the diapers. by mark steyn

Big Bailouts, Bigger Bucks
merrie
by merrie  1-30-2009
Whenever I discussed the current bailout situation with people, I find they have a hard time comprehending the actual numbers involved. That became a problem while doing the research for the Bailout Nation book. I needed some way to put this into proper historical perspective. The only single American event in history that even comes close to matching the cost of the credit crisis is World War II: Original Cost: $288 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $3.6 trillion The $4.6165 trillion dollars committed so far is about a trillion dollars ($979 billion dollars) greater than the entire cost of World War II borne by the United States: $3.6 trillion, adjusted for inflation (original cost was $288 billion). Go figure: WWII was a relative bargain. I estimate that by the time we get through 2010, the final bill may scale up to as much as $10 trillion dollars… By Barry Ritholtz - November 25th, 2008, 7:19AM

Blogging The Inaugur-A-Palooza
merrie
by merrie  1-15-2009    1
NEW YORK — President-elect Barack Obama decided not to sign corporate sponsors to help pay the projected $40 million cost of the official events around the Jan. 20 swearing in. So many marketers are working other avenues to get their brands before the millions of people who will attend the festivities or watch on TV. Among them are such well-known names as Pepsi, Ikea, T.G.I. Friday’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. From the airwaves to the streets of Washington, D.C., big-name marketers are trying to find ways to ride Inauguration Day enthusiasm. Which raises the question of when “He’s The Real Thing” is going to morph into ”Plop, plop, fizz, fizz.” MSNBC and other news outlets are looking to capitalize on the heightened interest in the inauguration of Barack Obama, as watch parties are being planned in cities across the nation.

Governments Ignore Starving To Prop Up Banks
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-16-2008    2
Experts have blamed the increase in famine on a number of factors such as oil prices, the growing use of biofuels and increased consumption of high-calorie food, particularly meat, in emerging economies. World Food Day hopes to divert attention back onto this ongoing food crisis. Almost a BILLION people are starving. A billion!! Can we even fathom, how many people that is, who are desperately trying to survive from day to day? I read, that on a 2 dollar a day wage, people are having to spend about $1,77 on food and the prices are so high, that it doesn't even cover their daily caloric needs. That leaves precious little money for housing, health, education, etc. Could YOU feed yourself and your family for less than 2 bucks a day... EVERY day... and still be able to send your children to school, get healthcare, etc? Just imagine if it were you.

Human Cells Memory Capacity vs Digital

Makes the old saying I feel like a million bucks... seem so SMALL! The sugar code is literally how your cells talk to eachother. A dense forest exists on healthy cells that is made up of glycoproteins - essentially simple sugars called saccharides. Our modern diet lacks the abyndance of these and thus scientists are trying to uncover the secrets of manufacturing these synthetically. The theory is - the faster and more complete your cells communicate the healthier you will thus become. You may add these necessary sugars into your diet and thus not stress your bodies own emergency processes by taking a product called Ambrotose, the worlds first complete glyconutrient supplement

But there is debate among investors over whether early, promising results from studies in Russia will translate into effectiveness in larger clinical trials. Pfizer will pay $225 up front and $500 million in bio-bucks. It will pay for 60% of development costs and get 60% of profits.

McCain's "straight talk" is apparently for sale. According to the report, "Oil and gas executives have not traditionally been a major source of campaign money for McCain. A breakdown of giving by the Center for Responsive Politics shows the industry falls 12th on a list of top donors, well behind securities firms, lawyers, banks, and real estate and health professionals." Now they dump big bucks into his campaign. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

Reports suggest the billionaire is considering pushing the Web portal to reconsider a buyout offer from Microsoft. If he's successful, his 50 million Yahoo shares could be worth as much as $33 each. He's been buying those shares in the past couple weeks when they were south of $27 each.
