POPSPledge Of Allegiance Is Un-American Interesting and thoughtful article on the history of the pledge and why, perhaps, its use is not such a great idea. Also, though it never occured to me to ask before now, do schoolkids in other countries (England, Canada, Italy, Peru, Japan, etc...) have to say a pledge to their government/flag before starting their day? The essay is not very long and interesting to read.

POPSFact: Nearly All of Hitlers Beliefs Placed Him On the Far Right[
Many conservatives accuse Hitler of being a leftist, on the grounds that his party was named "National Socialist." But socialism requires worker ownership and control of the means of production. In Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production, and they in turn were frequently controlled by the Nazi party and state. True socialism does not advocate such economic dictatorship -- it can only be democratic. Hitler's other political beliefs place him almost always on the far right. He advocated racism over racial tolerance, eugenics over freedom of reproduction, merit over equality, competition over cooperation, power politics and militarism over pacifism, dictatorship over democracy, capitalism over Marxism, realism over idealism, nationalism over internationalism, exclusiveness over inclusiveness, common sense over theory or science, pragmatism over principle, and even held friendly relations with the Church, even though he was an atheist.

POPSWhat Type of Recession Is It? Good news...the recession is over? Obviously this makes no sense. I suppose the elections in Afghanistan, the tea-parties, town hall meetings, Obamacare, swine flu domestic militarism, missing Russian boats, the return of Star Wars, unrest in South America, typhoons, wildfires, and approaching hurricane news needed a little pick-me-up.

POPSObama - found leaking out of the cracks of history …the mainstream media has finally done a bit of the candidate background reporting it declined to do during the campaign — other than in Wasilla — and whaddya know? The New York Times unearthed a 1983 article called, “Breaking the War Mentality,” that Columbia student Barack Obama wrote for a campus newspaper. The article shows that Obama dreaded American “militarism” and its “military-industrial interests,” while effusing enthusiasm for the dangerously delusional nuclear-freeze movement. Moreover, while indicating a preference for the political wisdom of reggae singer Peter Tosh over Ronald Reagan or Scoop Jackson, Obama bewailed the “narrow focus” of anti-militarism activists, worrying that they were targeting the “symptoms” rather than the real “disease,” namely, America’s underlying economic and political injustice…

POPSObama: Student Radical [Andy McCarthy] . . . namely, America's underlying economic and political injustice: Generally, the narrow focus of the Freeze movement as well as academic discussions of first versus second strike capabilities, suit the military-industrial interests, as they continue adding to their billion dollar erector sets. When Peter Tosh sings that "everybody's asking for peace, but nobody's asking for justice," one is forced to wonder whether disarmament or arms control issues, severed from economic and political issues, might be another instance of focusing on the symptoms of a problem instead of the disease itself. Obama nevertheless did see some advantage in homing in on a small target Mark Bigelow ... points to fruitful work being done by other organizations involved with disarmament. patdollard.com/

POPSFeminist CJPIP: "Coalition of Women for a Just Peace"!!! Leading where males fear ... The groups that founded the Coalition of Women for a Just Peace are Machsom Watch, Nogoy, Feminist Journal, Women in Black, The Fifth Mother, TANDI, Bat Shalom, New Profile and NELED. Is it odd or normal that it's women who are leading the way in Israel towards a just and peaceful future for all? Why must women lead again? Because they seek "equal rights for women and for all residents of Israel "!!!

POPSCensus GPS-tagging your home's front door Obama administration announced its oversight of the census, "literally taking control of the census away from the Commerce Department." He put that together with Obama's longtime push for national service. I ask again, what would be the purpose of shooting the GPS coordinates of American doorways?" he wrote. The answer he provided was alarming. "Imagine, if you will, that there are a number of people in a neighborhood that could not find the addresses they are tasked with finding. They are not locals, maybe are unable to read a map, or perhaps do not have the time to pull out a map, and they need to find you with specific GPS coordinates. Their devices would lead them to your front door with these coordinates. Imagine a crisis is afoot, and martial law is put into place. U.S. troops need to round up particular folks," he wrote.

POPSGen. Petraeus Implements Military Surge Against Four Somali Pirates in a Lifeboat Think this is an ONION story? Nope just USAnian overkill... "We want to ensure that we have all the capability that might be needed over the course of the coming days," Petraeus said. Seriously, who needs the Onion? But the plot is thickening. While the US Navy rushes in its reinforcements (it really seems so silly to write this), it looks like the pirates may be calling in back-up of their own: two pirate ships had left Eyl on Wednesday afternoon. He said a third -- the German cargo ship Hansa Stavanger -- had sailed from Xarardheere, some 230 miles south along the Somali coastline, and a fourth -- a Taiwanese fishing vessel seized Monday that was only 30 miles from the lifeboat -- was also on its way. The man said there were a total of 52 hostages aboard the ships floating toward the scene.

POPSStop Materilaism, Militarism and Racism This was the speech in which King powerfully opposed the U.S. war in Vietnam and argued that domestic problems in the United States, including poverty, could never be solved as long as we continued with such wars and with the investment of so many of our resources in militarism. When the U.S. House of Representatives first voted on a banker bailout bill last year, it responded to immense public pressure and voted No. Then forces heavily represented on Wall Street refused to take No for an answer. Kings' giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism were protected by the three enforcers of money, media, and party that control the people who are supposed to represent us.
