POPSMatthews Apologizes for West Point 'Enemy Camp' Slur Chris Matthews "Hardball".... West Point Slur VIDEO http://www.eyeblast.tv/public/checker.aspx?v=GdqGQu2Guz People who have watched me over the years know, I think, of my strong devotion to this country and strong gratitude toward those who serve it in the military. It's because our military is so good and true I want the civilians who make the policies and set the missions to get ‘em right in this country's best possible interest. And by the way it's something we're allowed to argue about in this country. Whenever I meet someone with a service record I always say, "Thank you for your service." They know I say it and I hope they know I mean it. Now to President Obama and the criticism he's facing from both the left and the right. A few minutes ago I spoke with Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, chairman of the subcommittee on Defense Appropriations. Newsbusters.org http://bit.ly/8GlFmg

POPSHouse GOP Brings Transparency To HealthCare Bill Online The GOP will continue its online push against the bill on Thursday, when Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) will lead a 12-hour online town hall to discuss health care. VIA Representative Bob Latta (Oh.-R) http://latta.amplify.com/ Meanwhile, the Republican caucus is using the social networking site Amplify to highlight portions of the bill with which they take issue. On their page healthcaretruth.amplify.com, Republican users share the actual text of the bill up for discussion and leave a comment. Other users can leave their own comments or share the content using Twitter, Facebook, Digg and other social networking tools. Reps. Boehner, Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) spearheaded the project, and Boehner introduced it to other House Republicans this morning at their weekly members-only meeting. http://rnmc.amplify.com/2009/11/03/house-gop-brings-transparency-to-health-care-reform/

POPSMarch on Washington Regardless, the timing of last night’s hastily arranged speech before a joint session of Congress was weird. Such special sessions are themselves weird, exceedingly rare forums usually reserved for dramatic effect, like when Presidents declare war. The glaring exception, it seems, was Bill Clinton’s ill-fated, pen-wagging veto threat to Congress if they failed to pass his (Hillary’s) health care plan. So why did Obama do it? Why now? According to USA Today before his speech, “the ever more noisy opposition to his health care objectives has had one result: It prompted Obama’s decision to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday in an effort to regain momentum on the issue.” So the President wants to have another argument with the voters. He already has ridiculed publicly citizens who have the audacity to disagree, like the lady who asked him to keep government out of her Medicare. (Maybe she was referring to his proposed $500 billion . . .

POPSHouse Democrats’ Government Takeover Creates 53 New Government Programs, Offices, & Bureaucracies: Detailed Analysis Washington, Sep 3 - Democrats continue to claim that their health care legislation will not increase the federal deficit, even though the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has revealed the truth: the bill actually increases the deficit by $239 billion. One of the reasons it’s so expensive is the plethora of new federal government programs it would create. House Republican Leader John Boehner offers comment. Here they are, as identified by the House Republican Conference, chaired by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) (#1 through #53) http://republicanleader.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=143465 Print version of this document at link

POPSPelosi proudly un-American
"Yesterday morning USA Today ran an Op-Ed by Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, which for ease of discussion I will attribute to Pelosi. The title is ‘Un-American’ attacks can’t derail health care debate, which frankly I find amusing since I don’t recall a debate on that or any other subject this year, actually happening on Capitol Hill. She bounces back and forth between oooohing and aaaahing about how awesome (butterflies, rainbows, unicorns, fairy dust) government takeover of your personal health care decisions would be, and berating freedom-loving Americans (bad conservatives! Flyover country! Hitler! Astroturf! Limbaugh! Goblins!) for strongly expressing their opinions to their elected representatives, and oppressively running into union thug fists with their faces. She’s right about one thing: Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. As it happens, “drowning out opposing views” is an area of expertise for Speaker Pelosi. POPSPelosi Calls Health Care Critics 'Un-American' "I, like most Americans, would find that kind of characterization of citizens exercising their First Amendment rights to be offensive," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., told FOX News. "There's nothing more American than letting your elected representatives know how you feel about important issues facing the nation." House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, released a statement calling the charge "outrageous and reprehensible." Pelosi and Hoyer made the accusation as part of a lengthy column in USA Today stressing the need for action on health care reform. The piece was published as lawmakers return to their districts for summer recess, a period that could imperil the legislation if health care critics cause moderate Democrats to lose their stomachs for sweeping reform.

POPSRepublicans Warn of 'Web of Bureaucracy' in Obamacare
"If anybody thinks that all of this bureaucracy is needed to fix our health care system, I plainly disagree," Boehner said. "What this is going to do is ration care, limit the choices that patients and doctors have and really decrease the quality of our health care system." Estimates of the House Democrats' plan range from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion over 10 years, with much of the cost offset by a surtax on the wealthy. As Republicans railed against the package, a Senate committee voted on another version of a health care overhaul, becoming the first congressional panel to do so. "The proposal amounts to a government takeover of the American economy," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., said of the House version, pledging that his party would oppose it. But Democrats, and especially Obama, are set on passing a health care overhaul soon -- whether Republicans are on board or not. Obama talked about his health care goals Wednesday afternoon, as his allies on Capitol Hill

POPSGrim Milestone... US Deficit Passes $1,000,000,000,000 For First Time Ever The country's soaring deficits are making Chinese and other foreign buyers of U.S. debt nervous, which could make them reluctant lenders down the road. It could force the Treasury Department to pay higher interest rates to make U.S. debt attractive longer-term. "These are mind boggling numbers," said Sung Won Sohn, an economist at the Smith School of Business at California State University. "Our foreign investors from China and elsewhere are starting to have concerns about not only the value of the dollar but how safe their investments will be in the long run." Fox News How about that Stimulus Bill? Obama will quadruple the US budget deficit his first year in office. And, he wants to spend trillions more for his Obamacare program. Related... Rep. Mike Pence said today that the Stimulus Bill is not working. Yeah, we know. Posted by Gateway Pundit

POPSWho Stands With The Freedom Fighters of Iran? Iran's dictatorship is the heart of much of Islamic terrorism and violence throughout the Middle East and the world. Ridding the world of that evil transcends the more narrow concerns about Iranian nuclear development! President Obama, behind the curve of even Democrats in his own party in the House who voted unanimously for a resolution sponsored by Mike Pence, (R-IN) to "Condemn the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias," finally some additional fortitude Saturday afternoon and released the following statement: The statement above is a subtle shift from Obama's statements earlier in the week where he repeated the phrase "respect Iranian sovereignty" which is code for respect the dictatorship of the Mullahs. Today's phrase "If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community" is a subtle, but significant shift.

POPS'Danger of the Fairness Doctrine Coming Back Is Completely Imaginary'
Dennis Kucinich is also rumored to be involved. The Da Vinci Code it ain't. Wallace asked the top adviser about an issue making the rounds on both conservative and liberal radio shows, where Democratic Congressional leaders ( and even Bill Clinton ) have recently weighed in. "Will you rule out reimposing the Fairness Doctrine?" asked Wallace. "I'm going to leave that issue to Julius Genachowski, our new head of the FCC, to, and the president, to discuss," Axelrod said. "So I don't have an answer for you now." In June, press secretary Michael Ortiz told Broadcasting & Cable that "Sen. Obama does not support reimposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters." But since becoming president, it's been difficult to get such a definitive statement. Here's a list of co-sponsors of the Broadcaster Freedom Act. http://demint.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressReleases.Detail&PressRelease_id=b21a8827-daa8-cfc0-cb35-5849cc7b2868

POPSTRANSPARENCY ABANDONED: Obama and Dems Break Promise to Put Stimulus Online
“The American people have a right to know what’s in this bill,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) told HUMAN EVENTS after the press conference. “Every member of Congress — Republicans and Democrats — voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.” For some completely unknown reason (I just can’t possibly imagine) MSNBC has not followed up on its own article by asking Democrats what happened to the 48hr online review? So, who DOES know what’s in the bill that Congress is going to approve? Congress doesn’t. Lobbyists do SURPRISE! Dems Break Promise: Stimulus Bill to Floor Friday In a press conference Thursday, the House Republican leadership spoke candidly about being kept out of the House-Senate conference on the Obama-Pelosi-Reid so-called “economic stimulus” bill. They confirmed they had not yet seen the text of the bill as of 4 p.m. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=30697

POPSHouse GOP Lurches Right Yeah Mark, everyone voted for those commie Democrats because you guys weren't conservative enough. This explanation makes sense to you? Besides, it's quickly becoming clear that those "strong moral values" are what have you guys on the outs -- at least, all the moralizing about those values. People are sick of narrowminded phonies who wear Jesus on their sleeves. But tell you what Mark, you go ahead and operate from your theory. Do everyone a favor and stay screwed for a while, OK?

POPSUnfair and Unbalanced I listen to talk radio on occasion. It is available, along with sources of opposing view points, as the result of one of America’s greatest freedoms: free speech. I have never subscribed to the idea of following only individuals that I agree with. That kind of dedication, in my opinion, stifles the mind and leads to a myopic and very narrowed view of life. Democrats are talking about ending conservative dominance of the radio dial. They would accomplish this through the Fairness Doctrine. While I don't agree with conservative ideas people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and others espouse, they are experiencing a dominance because they have a following. That in itself doesn’t make what they say valid but we no more have the right to shut them down than we do to shut down liberal media outlets. Taking away freedoms granted by the Constituion is not the action of a free and enlightened society. Doing so will surely negatively affect us all.

POPSNo Statutory Protection for Bloggers (cont.)The will of Congress was to amend the Federal Election Campaign Act to exclude Internet communications from the Act's definition of "public communication." The bill is commonly regarded as the "blogger protection" bill since it addresses concerns that bloggers who regularly engage in mass public communications will become subject to federal campaign finance regulations—- especially if they reference a federal candidate 30 days before a primary election or 60 days before a general election. Of course, all restrictions on speech content offend the Constitution, but protecting bloggers will be a good first step. In the wake of the Congressional debate two years ago, and the ensuing outrage online, the FEC moved to enact rules the give bloggers the protections envisioned in the Blogger Protection Act. But FEC rules are a ffar cry from legislative protection for the internet.

POPSConservative Senator DeMint R-SC Opposes Wall Street Bailout Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), chairman of the conservative House Republican Study Committee, questioned the proposed bailout Friday, saying he was “unconvinced that this is the proper remedy for our nation at this time.” Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.), another conservative Republican, said in a statement Saturday: “Congress must not hastily embrace a cure that may do more harm to our economy than the disease of bad debt.” "This plan will not only cause our nation to fall off the debt cliff, it could send the value of the dollar into a free-fall as investors around the world question our ability to repay our debts,” said DeMint. “It's also very likely that this plan will extend the cycle of bailouts, encouraging other companies to behave in reckless ways that create the need for even more bailouts, triggering an endless run on our treasury.”

POPSHouse Republicans Gas "Talkathon" To Continue Monday "But the American people are suffering,” Boehner and Blunt said in the memo. “The consequences of continued congressional inaction on gas prices are unacceptable. We’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.” Update - Neither Boehner nor Blunt are expected to be in attendance at Monday's talkfest, and its unclear if they will show up at any point during the week. The session will not be televised, but Republicans felt they got a lot of good press out of Friday's "revolt," so they will be back at it again, and younger GOP lawmakers were clearly energized by the tactic, something not evident among Republicans for most of the 110th Congress. hotair at following link: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/03/its-on-house-republicans-oil-protest-to-resume-tomorrow/

POPS List Of Plausible Picks For McCain's Vice President
Five meet all the important criteria to be John McCain's running mate this fall. They are: Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, John Kasich, Rob Portman, and Chris Cox. They edge out other superb candidates such as Mike Pence, Mark Sanford, and Paul Ryan. (former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating.) To review, the best candidate 1) will be obviously ready to become president at a moment's notice; 2) will be a Reaganite conservative; 3) should at least put into play a state, region, or constituency that otherwise would be far less attainable for McCain or for a typical Republican; 4) should be well rounded, preferably with at least interesting non-political item on his resume; 5) should have some executive or serious organizational experience; 6) should be intelligent, widely respected, good on TV, and preferably "cool" in persona to balance McCain's sometimes fearsome intensity; and 7) should clearly be a reformer with a record of occasionally bucking the establishment on behalf of principle.

POPS The Fight To Defend The First Amendment Two precious rights – free speech and a free press – face a serious threat today in Washington as Congressional Democrats have expressed their desire for a return of the archaic “Fairness Doctrine.” This outdated and misleadingly named mandate requires broadcasters to provide equal time for “contrasting points of view.” But after nearly 40 years of trial, the FCC discontinued the doctrine in 1987 as it proved to actually stifle public debate. This is another example of Washington’s control over the will of free people, another case of the government forcing the market’s hand in pursuit of political goals.

POPSIs Katie Just Another White House Echo Chamber? Katie's first report on Face th Nation really pissed me off. She made the same ridiculously misleading remarks as Congressman Mike Pence made when he went on a military escorted tour or the market place. At least she had the good sense to mention that she realizes she is being taken to see what the government wants her to see. But I can only hope that this week, while she is there, she will make her own way into the areas that the government does not lead her. However, if all she does is report on a showcase report under government auspices, I will have no choice but to realize that Ms. Couric is nothing but a happy talk morning person who is totally out of her league. Let's hope she can do the country, women and the citizens of the U.S. proud, but actually reporting the truth without government guidance.
