Giant Dams: Mutli-Threats to Humans and Planet
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-4-2009
Hydropower dams may play a role in creating and releasing methane but the greater danger has not yet been investigated or evaluated. What's that? What effect(s) does the disruption and rapid change of the larger natural system cause? Multiple dams on the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers aided river transportation and controlled some annual flooding beginning in the 1930s. The result(s)? The Mississippi Delta not only stopped growing, it has begun to disappear. The natural barrier that helped to protect New Orleans from storm surges undermined - literally. Redistribution of soil along all the rivers - history and greater reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. There is now a 70 mile dead zone at the end of the Mississippi that is growing each year. The Three Gorges Dam complex in China - its impact(s)? Flyways of migratory birds disrupted/altered. A role in the spread of Avian Flu? Who's got a bandage for my foot, I think we shot ourselves again!

Watching Whales Watching Us
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  8-1-2009
The question of sonar’s catastrophic effects on whales even reached the Supreme Court last November, in a case pitting the United States Navy against the Natural Resources Defense Council. The council, along with other environmental groups, had secured two landmark victories in the district and appellate courts of California, which ruled to heavily restrict the Navy’s use of sonar devices in its training exercises. The Supreme Court, however, in a 6-to-3 decision widely viewed as a setback for the environmental movement, overturned parts of the lower-court rulings, faulting them for, in the words of Chief Justice John Roberts’s majority opinion, failing “properly to defer to senior Navy officers’ specific, predictive judgments,” thereby jeopardizing the safety of the fleet and sacrificing the public’s interest in military preparedness by “forcing the Navy to deploy an inadequately trained antisubmarine force.” In his decision, Roberts went on to minimize, in a fairly

14,000km Dragonfly Migration Discovered
chestnut501
by chestnut501  7-26-2009
“There are earlier records of swarms of dragonflies flying out to sea, and at sea. But it was always assumed that those dragonflies were doomed. Which says rather more about our earth-bound lack of imagination than it does about the globe skimmers’ extraordinary flying abilities.”

Gonzo Gastronomy: How the Food Industry Has Made Bacon a Weapon of Mass Destruction

Rolling Stone paints a grim picture of what goes on inside a hog CAFO: "Sows are artificially inseminated and fed and delivered of their piglets in cages so small they cannot turn around. Forty fully grown 250-pound male hogs often occupy a pen the size of a tiny apartment. They trample each other to death. There is no sunlight, straw, fresh air or earth. The floors are slatted to allow excrement to fall into a catchment pit under the pens, but many things besides excrement can wind up in the pits: afterbirths, piglets accidentally crushed by their mothers, old batteries, broken bottles of insecticide, antibiotic syringes, stillborn pigs …" Manufacturing Pandemics Factory farms are a hot spot for new infectious diseases. According to a former chief of the Centers for Disease Control's Special Pathogens Branch, "Intensive agricultural methods often mean that a single, genetically homogeneous species is raised in a limited area, creating a perfect target for emerging diseases, whic

Revealed: the face of the first European
infidel70

"The reconstruction was made for the forthcoming BBC 2 series The Incredible Human Journey which documents human origins and evolution, from our birthplace in Africa to the long migratory routes that led us to populate the most distant parts of the globe. It is impossible from the bones to determine the skin colour of the individual, although scientists speculate it was probably darker than modern-day Europeans, reflecting a more recent African origin. the Human Journey

Check out the Atlas that shows the human migration paths. I ordered their genome test to see some of the homes of my very ancient relatives. Millions of ancestors in me are trying to raise me to see what’s best for all descendants. I’m now one of the attendants. Some voices I hear more clearly; the ones that talk to me dearly, the ones who assist my final test and never abandon this quest. My heritage I should manage well. Does it mean I must try to tell tales of where truth might dwell? So be it.

The Co-operative Bank will announce today that it is to fund a legal challenge by the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, which claims the boom in tar sands extraction is destroying their hunting and fishing lands. The court challenge calls for an injunction to stop more than 16,000 permits issued by the Alberta state government and, if successful, could dramatically reduce or even stop what has been described as a modern day "gold rush" for the oil, spurred by the expectation of high long-term oil prices. Last year the International Energy Agency estimated that the amount of oil in tar sands and other "unconventional" sources, especially in Canada and Venezuela, was 1-2tn barrels, only slightly less than the remaining conventional oil sources. Companies involved include Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and Total.

Just a spoonful of sugar helps this medicine go down In a most delightful way!!! Something that has nothing to do with it : In italy street prostitution became much more visible in the early 1990s with the migratory wave from Eastern European countries after the fall of the Soviet regime. Many street prostitutes are young underage girls from Western Africa and Eastern Europe who are victims of human trafficking and are in italy illegally. No soldiers against these immigrants?

"The report will look at a range of options, as well as a review of the existing evidence." Article from: The Daily Telegraph
