Is Florida the Sunset State?
LoPhatt
by LoPhatt  7-15-2008    2
Florida was once a swampy rural backwater, the poorest and emptiest state in the South. But in the 20th century, air-conditioning, bug spray and the miracle of water control helped transform it into a migration destination for the restless masses of Brooklyn and Cleveland, Havana and Port-au-Prince. I am a sixth generation Floridian, but I am told there are more than 4000 new people coming to live here every day.

Common Wealth: Sustainable future
egsnyder
by egsnyder  7-13-2008
We are in one another's faces as never before, crowded into an interconnected society of global trade, migration, ideas and, yes, risk of pandemic diseases, terrorism, refugee movements and conflict. We also face a momentous choice. Continue on our current course, and the world is likely to experience growing conflicts between haves and have-nots, intensifying environmental catastrophes and downturns in living standards caused by interlocking crises of energy, water, food and violent conflict. Yet for a small annual investment of world income, undertaken cooperatively across the world, our generation can harness new technologies for clean energy, reliable food supplies, disease control and the end of extreme poverty.

Another Leftist Icon Comes to His Senses
willhelm
by willhelm  7-12-2008    14
This is a great article about the transformation of David Mamet from Liberal to Conservative. I do not know who David Mamet is but I find the story rather familiar in my own transformation and in the natural maturity of many as they gain wisdom and perspective. It gets frustrating at times seeing and hearing comments that are based on such lack of clarity. This is more evidence that the natural growth and transformation is toward a Libertarian stance founded in clear-mindedness, Conservative stance on constitutional intent, and Incrementalism as the wisest approach to societal advance in the face of fascist-progressivism.

Now they say global warming affects US security
pkronfield
by pkronfield  6-25-2008    1
Now the loony left is trying to appeal to conservatives with a security theme. Never mind that flood have been wiping out people since Noah built his ark. The ancient world is full of examples of thriving cities having been abandoned due to climate change - and this long before any industrialization or greenhouse gasses. Maybe the dinosaurs went extinct due to their all pervasive flatulence? I think this global warming hype is more of the same - liberal oral flatulence.

Genetically engineered cells make their own nanomagnets, providing clear MRI images.
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-20-2008    2
If genetically engineering cells to produce their own magnetic nanoparticles proves successful, this provides a new window through which to view many biological processes as they unfold, from the formation of tumors to the migration of stem cells injected to treat disease. "It's just amazing that they can get a mammalian cell to actually make the material," says Lee Josephson, an associate professor at the Harvard Medical School's Center for Molecular Imaging Research. "I think it's a really meaningful piece of work."

Resource Scarcity & Insecurity
kmcolo
by kmcolo  6-19-2008
Despite these dire circumstances, Matthew believes key actions and policies could significantly reduce the likelihood that resource scarcity will lead to conflict and insecurity. He offers 14 specific recommendations for NGOs, governments, and international organizations, which include supporting “the effort in UNEP to integrate the environment into post-conflict assessment, disaster management, and peacebuilding” and mobilizing “the enormous capacity of the private sector and NGO communities…around sustainable development, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding.”
