Touch Screen
bookchick49
by bookchick49  11-7-2009    1
Back in 1998/99, myself and a co-worker were brainstorming on computing ideas. We came up with an idea for a computer screen that would act like a kiosk of sorts, for the elderly. Realizing that there was a need to keep in touch and up to date with technology, it 'felt right' to bring something like touch screen for the elderly or those that could not type, into age (pun intended). Our idea was to set up these kiosk style monitors in senior assisted/non-assisted homes; on campus clubhouses, etc so anyone could send email and play a few games. Easy stuff that would not be intimidating or difficult to learn. Idea blown away when presented to our employer as not 'marketable enough.' About 3 weeks ago, I walked into Sam's Club; the computer section. A round table was set up with HP Touchscreen monitors. Curios, I walked over to inspect and could not get close enough except to watch. Persons much older than myself standing around the table, playing games by touching the scre

And the rest? I must buy the book, maybe!? Enough already! I think all us XP'ers should just be waiting for the finishing line! I for one don't trust Microsoft anymore. In the end, we can always go for Ubuntu, right?

HTML5 Will Kill The OS!
merrie
by merrie  5-28-2009    1
We’ve heard that story before. Java was supposed to raise apps above the level of the operating system, offering cross-platform “write once, run everywhere” applications that would break the coupling between an application and a specific operating system. Proponents predicted Windows would become less important with the rise of Java apps. While Java has accomplished a great deal, it’s potential as an OS-killer has not been realized. HTML5 has a better shot.

US teacher detains student for using Linux
dewitte
by dewitte  12-27-2008
This is interesting. I think you should encourage kids to try alternate technologies like this. They can do it now while they have a chance - BEFORE they get into a job that requires them to conform to a particular option. There is nothing wrong with Linux - and it is mostly free. Mr. Stark went on to say: "The most disturbing part of this resides in the fact that the Austin Independent School District purchases millions of dollars of Microsoft Software - money that could be better spent on educating our children. A dedicated school teacher would recognise that fact and lobby for a switch to free open source software."

New Apple OS Takes Aim At Offices
David M Ewalt
by David M Ewalt  6-10-2008
For all of Apple's successes in recent years, the company has still failed to significantly increase the use of its OS in workplaces -- Windows is still far and away the most popular system for companies. So it makes sense for Steve Jobs to target those customers in the future.

HELP SAVE XP Time Is Running Out
merrie
by merrie  5-9-2008
According to tests by Devil Mountain Software comparing the release candidates for the last Windows XP service pack and the first Vista service pack, XP SP3 performs twice as fast as Vista SP1 on the same machine--and slower than the initial release of the Vista OS as well. From CIO.com: Wondering what's happened to momentum for Microsoft's Vista operating system in corporate America? Fact is, enterprise IT has continued to decline the Vista plate like it's an undercooked holiday casserole. Listen to what Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd said: HP never saw a "Vista moment at any time over the past year."

For a while now any PC's I've sold I've been doing this to for a few customers, mainly those who want to keep everyone the same OS, or those with 3rd party apps that Vista doesn't support. However I've just started using Vista and so far I'm impressed.

VMware Player:Run iso files before installation
pokkets
by pokkets  1-26-2008    2
I put the url of a program that can check iso files on a hard disk in comments and another with VMplayer OS images. The clip might make more sense then I've often wondered how to check an Operating System before installing it, or even burning an iso file onto a Disk. One the main problems apart from the space, has been, after installing another operating system, in a dual boot, it can mess up the boot files of systems already loaded, if it is removed. This player allows booting of another system, or the running of an Appliance in another window without having to reboot, or partition the disks. This could have saved me a lot of trouble over the last month - at least I know more about disk partitions and boot files. They suggest 1GB of free space to give an internally booted system room. It is available for Windows, and Linux, and the site also has a range of other Virtual Appliances, both free, and commercial, is Open Source, and has a knowledge base, community, and Self-Help Support.

Will The Mac OS Run Windows Apps?
David M Ewalt
by David M Ewalt  12-5-2007
To translate this from the geek speak: Apple may be adding code into their newest operating system which would allow user to run Windows software, natively, from within the Mac OS. Right now, you have to run a special program, and run windows inside of that -- or else boot your computer into Windows entirely. If this is true, it would be huge -- and a major threat to Microsoft's domination of the OS market.
