POPSNPO | Which states learn from N.J. mistakes? No surprise, but this story reports that even the most wealthy Americans can become gypsies when they have had enough with the "soak the rich" mentality of their local legislatures. California should take notice.

POPS Inspector General: TARP Has Created a Looming Disaster
--- will have been for naught if we do nothing to correct the fundamental problems in our financial system and end up in a similar or even greater crisis in two, or five, or ten years’ time. It is hard to see how any of the fundamental problems in the system have been addressed to date. * To the extent that huge, interconnected, “too big to fail” institutions contributed to the crisis, those institutions are now even larger, in part because of the substantial subsidies provided by TARP and other bailout programs. * To the extent that institutions were previously incentivized to take reckless risks through a “heads, I win; tails, the Government will bail me out” mentality, the market is more convinced than ever that the Government will step in as necessary to save systemically significant institutions. This perception was reinforced when TARP was extended until October 3, 2010, thus permitting Treasury to maintain a war chest of potential rescue funding ....

POPSViruses hive intelligence (biology) Even very simple creatures like viruses may display intelligence, not only in their mutations, but in their behavior. It's a good example to have in mind when considering the question of what is in fact intelligence. The finding has plausible applications for vaccines too.

POPS Perfect Storm Monday, January 18, 2010 In anecdotal evidence, friends have reported from north and west of the city, as well as within greater Boston, pretty much the same thing we’re seeing south of the city. A lot of astonishment at the rate at which Brown signs suddenly started popping up all over the place, a sense of engagement and excitement, everyone talking about it. With very little of the same from the Coakley camp, though I did hear among a couple of groups of friends, people are sharply divided and vocal. The committed libs, under assault, knocked a little off their feet, are hunkering down, working up a siege mentality, and are determined to fight as well. Something cited frequently in the casual reports is that people who normally don’t pay much attention or care much about this kind of thing are paying attention and give a damn. In a special election in January.

POPSBarack Obama's Rule by EPA Decree Is a coup d'etat Against Congress, Made In Britain - ClimateGate In the first place, regulation can be challenged in a way that laws cannot. So the EPA’s proposed ruling on so-called “Greenhouse Gases” can be opposed extensively with litigation, to the point that the ruling might not yet be in force when Obama demits office. In the second place, the EPA is funded by Congress. So, if the Agency is being used to bypass or neuter Congress, why should legislators not play hardball and retaliate by cutting off its funding? The EPA may look formidable, but its situation is rather as if Rommel were buying the fuel for his tanks from the Allies. But what is of compelling interest on this side of the pond is the way in which the bullets to shoot down American democracy were made in Britain. The trail is not hard to follow.

POPS35 years behind bars for having bushy sideburns
These are the kind of stories that demonstration how broken and totally unfair our justice system is. Anyone with a couple of "thinking" brain cells would realize that when it comes to human existence, right vs. wrong is not an exact science. Human emotion always trumps common sense if laws aren't there to intervene. This is a good reason why the DEATH PENALTY should be abolished. Many western societies who have advanced so beyond the mentality of the USA in sophistication have long understood this. I love my country but too many Americans who also profess love for this country will at the drop of a hat bark, HANG EM or OFF WITH HIS HEAD, and follow through if they could because of an naive notion that ONE SIZE FITS ALL. In other words, if you don't look like them, act like them, "think" (I use that term loosely) like them, they will refer to your ubiquity as alien and not deserving the rights they enjoy. Ignorance is not bliss! http://www.thethinkingblue.com/family/BOSTONLEGAL.html

POPSThe Drum Beat Of Constant Fear "But then there is the opposite view that this entire war mentality and progression of war will come to an end when the trillions of dollars that have fueled war will dry up as America is driven closer and closer to economic collapse. The irony of that possibility is this; that unnecessary war which is so very costly and damaging to our economic stability will be the very vehicle that destroys itself in the end."

POPSconfront the wrecking crew a bit about why people who banter about the need for "less government" are suspect at best and miserable stewards of it ......at worst............... makes sense to me............the mentality of taking a job that gives you control- great benefits etc...........while saying there is just too darn much of it? always sort of hit me around the gut-as being a lame play on words and something of like the playing of "the shell" game-

POPSKeep the government out of the news business
Turning to Washington for help to save the declining news business says much about the mentality of mainstream journalism leaders, an attitude that we and the government are on the same side. This is the mentality that led to the news establishment’s acceptance of the Iraq War. Go to the clip to learn what happened to Mother Jones after becoming a tax exempt non-profit after it reported on lobbying in Washington. Once you allow the government or private corporation to have any controlling link to the media you lose independence. Editors become fearful of criticizing the hand that feeds it. Publishers and benefactors become cozy and unbiased reports become fewer and fewer. Journalism becomes a de facto advertisement for consumer products. We hope in the future we’ll see more I.F. Stones, more guerrilla warriors on the Web, in print and on the air. Because of them—and not because of a government handout—great reporting will survive, as it always has.

POPSLawmakers seek ban on laptops in airliner cockpits This is the mentality of legislators. They approach this isolated situation as if it were a quickly escalating ‘problem’ that must be addressed immediately instead of leaving it to the airline to tighten their own rules of conduct for pilots. Legislators love to jump on stuff like this because it has the appearance, to us lowly tax payers, that they are coming to our rescue to protet us from the evil use of laptops in cockpits. And it makes them feel good about themselves that they are doing something useful. More legislation! More rules! More laws! More oversight! Yeah, that will make us all be more responsible.

POPSRichmond gang rape seen as "nearly inevitable"
More: English teacher Jessica Price, who knows the victim and most of the arrested suspects, said the girl has helped in conflict-mediation groups wanted to join the Police Explorers, a Boy Scouts group that lets boys and girls learn law enforcement with local police… That such a girl could be so brutalized speaks more to a pack mentality, stoked by booze and street machismo, than it does to the general character of Richmond High's youths, Price said. "Those boys who did what they did weren't picturing that girl as a human," she said. "I think you see these kinds of boys at a lot of high schools - so desensitized it was like they saw her as a toy. Boys like that - there aren't many like them, but they can be so hard. All they needed was something to set them off." She told a school district safety panel last week that some girls trying to find out who had watched the rape were being threatened in the hallways - and that, too, she blames on a desensitized mentality.

POPSOne of The Biggest Bait-And-Switch Acts in History I'm thinking it's time to pronounce Obama and his agenda precisely what they are - socialist and looking to bring down the last great remaining free capitalist system in the world so as to bring it in line with too much else of a statist world. What else can one call it with any degree of honesty? Certainly liberal no longer serves. The Left abandoned classic liberalism a decade ago. And the New Left has only gotten worse. It's time to draw the battle lines more clearly, start speaking of what freedom, capitalism, individualism and self-determinism actually are and explain to people how they won't be much of anything in some new Obama-designed state. It's time to forget about compromise and begin rejecting Obama and his grand plans completely as he and they deserve for being un-American in the most important meanings of the word. Obama sold his healthcare proposal as a way to reduce costs and help the economy. But, Pawlenty says,

POPSRich "Victims" The conservatives have a mentality where they need to identify themselves as victims, no matter how good they have it, and then demand that things be made "better" for them, at the same time as they scream "oppression" at anyone who has a differing opinion. It's part-and-parcel of the pathological selfishness that marks right-wingers (really, only a step above sociopaths)
