We Need To Do Better For Our Military
sahara
by sahara  11-10-2009
Much of the study focused on 4th Brigade, home unit to most of the violent crime suspects. 4th Brigade was compared head-to-head with 3rd Brigade, which recently returned from Iraq. The 4th Brigade, now in Afghanistan, has suffered a higher casualty rate than other units its size in two deployments, the Army found, losing lives at a rate more than eight times that of 3rd Brigade. Along with the deaths came intense combat that took a mental toll on troops, the Army found. Soldiers in 4th Brigade were more likely than other soldiers to suffer mental illness. The study also found, though, that soldiers feel their careers can be damaged by seeking mental health help and too often feel that enlisted leaders don't support troops with mental illness. Should adult adoptees have rights to their birth certificates?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  11-8-2009
November is National Adoption Month and I am going to try and highlight some of the concerns going on in the field of adoptions and post-adoption mental health (my specialty) to raise some more awareness on the topic. I am going to try and be fair and show both sides of the issues. Basically, I want to hear your thoughts and concerns. Tweet me a reply or post a comment below... The article clip below asks the questions of why states don't let adult adoptees have access to their birth certificates? What are your thoughts on it?

False Flag Flu (H1n1) prompts changes to Mental Health Act
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-25-2009    2
I started to comment but couldn't really add to these. Is it right that swine flu should affect health regulations? Your comments (terms and conditions apply): "Absolutely not, especially if these authorities redefine 'mental illness' to include being opposed to the government's official stories about the swine flu. When governments remove civil rights, and arbitrarily change laws so as to deny due process of law, we are automatically living under a dictatorship. Citizens of any nation which allow such nefarious backdoor assaults on their freedoms will have their indifference rewarded with tyranny" – Dee Nicholson, Canada "No. absolutely not. In the event of staff shortages, what we don't need is less thorough assessment! Swine flu seems to be the 'new terrorism' allowing the state to impose 'fear based' measures that would otherwise seem unthinkable" – Christian Thompson, Yorkshire "Tyranny, fascism and eugenicism in action" – Scott, Teesside

Depression: A Mistaken Disease
vienova4
by vienova4  8-3-2009    2
Is there a biological basis for depression? Certainly, according to Dr. Mark Rasenick, a professor of physiology, biophysics and psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago. Even then, he contends that we know too little about the disease to even begin to treat it effectively, let alone stem its rising tide in the global population. I share his sentiment that the medical professionals erroneously see medication the magic bullet to cure depression. Yet one needs to interpret with caution his assertion that depression is a "biological, medical problem" that often requires "long-term treatment." The relationship between biological and emotional aspects of depression remains a chicken-and-egg puzzle: does one feel depressed because of a chemical imbalance in the brain, or does feeling depressed lead to such imbalance?

Green (1/8th) Acres sprout in the city
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  5-26-2009
The return of treating our modest homesteads as sources of food is a great thing to contemplate. Food security is one of the most important issues today, for our health and for our peace of mind (as long as you choose not use pesticides). We need to celebrate our agrarian ancestry and learn the amazing amount of food that can be produced on a 1/8 acre plot. Every year I grow tomatoes, peppers, peas, green beans, carrots, cucumbers, radish, lettuce, squash, pumpkin, cherries, plums, peaches, pears, apples, and many herbs on my standard lot, all in the backyard. This year I’m building new beds to be used next year to add grapes and I’m going to extend my garden to the front yard. The health benefits, both physical as well as mental, cannot be overstated. A lot of excess goes to the local food bank and pride in doing that cannot be bought. Also, everybody, visit your local farmers market and eat locally.

Not Only In Texas....ALL ER's Abused
Ilsadago1
by Ilsadago1  4-1-2009
"Frequent Fliers" They are why, when you or your family member is hurt or really sick, it seems to take forever to get some help. They overload an already overloaded system daily. If you were to check, you'd find that ambulance companies transport many of these people also...because they know that if they arrive via EMS, they get right in - a warm cot, maybe some food and lots of attention. Primary care docs don't want them - no money in it. Mental Health services are underfunded and overwhelmed. So the answer? How about instead of raising taxes, we get rid of a bloated HHS system and spend the money on actually helping these people?
