Health Bill Creates A Massive Cash Crunch, Then Bankrupts Many Insurers
merrie
by merrie  12-23-2009    3
Insurers are not allowed to take into account differential risks based on pre-existing conditions. And the premium differentials based on such matters as age and tobacco use are smaller than the market spreads. If too many customers demand coverage from a given insurer to insure efficiently, it's the government that will decide how many they have to keep and who they are. Next, it's the government that requires extensive coverage including "ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse disorder services, prescription drugs, rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management, pediatric services, including oral and vision care." The price squeeze gets even tighter because in every required area of care a collection of government standards will help set the minimum level of required services.

Drugging Our Kids to Enrich MDs and Big Pharma
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-14-2009    1
We Americans will do anything for money; outsource our jobs, imprison the poor, rip off our Grannys, militarize our sons, pimp our daughters, drug our kids. We call it capitalism and praise it to the skies. We denigrate, scapegoat and cast out anyone who dares to criticize. More from the article below: ""All these drugs may curb a target symptom slightly more effectively than a placebo does for a short period of time, say six weeks," Whitaker said. However, what "you find with every class of these psychiatric drugs is a worsening of the target symptom of depression or psychosis or anxiety, over the long term, compared to placebo-treated patients." "So even on the target symptoms, there's greater chronicity and greater severity of symptoms," he reports, "And you see a fairly significant percentage of patients where new and more severe psychiatric symptoms are triggered by the drug itself."

Sick Around the World
sahara
by sahara  11-23-2009    1
One secret to Japan's success? By law, everyone must buy health insurance -- either through an employer or a community plan -- and, unlike in the U.S., insurers cannot turn down a patient for a pre-existing illness, nor are they allowed to make a profit. Reid's journey then takes him to Germany, the country that invented the concept of a national health care system. For its 80 million people, Germany offers universal health care, including medical, dental, mental health, homeopathy and spa treatment. Professor Karl Lauterbach, a member of the German parliament, describes it as "a system where the rich pay for the poor and where the ill are covered by the healthy." As they do in Japan, medical providers must charge standard prices. This keeps costs down, but it also means physicians in Germany earn between half and two-thirds as much as their U.S. counterparts.

Should adult adoptees have rights to their birth certificates?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  11-8-2009
November is National Adoption Month and I am going to try and highlight some of the concerns going on in the field of adoptions and post-adoption mental health (my specialty) to raise some more awareness on the topic. I am going to try and be fair and show both sides of the issues. Basically, I want to hear your thoughts and concerns. Tweet me a reply or post a comment below... The article clip below asks the questions of why states don't let adult adoptees have access to their birth certificates? What are your thoughts on it?

Flu Alert: 10 Warning Signs to Call the Doctor
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-24-2009
People at higher risk for severe illness include pregnant women, young children, and adults with chronic illnesses or weak immune systems. Those of us caring for older adults feel particularly worried, because seniors are generally at high risk for getting very sick from seasonal influenza. The H1N1 strain is a little different in this respect; adults over 60 seem to be somewhat protected from it. Still, when older adults get sick, we need to watch them carefully to make sure it’s not developing into something more serious.

Eating healthy to fight depression
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-9-2009    3
The connection between physical and mental health seems absolute, so i suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that eating well is not only good for your body, but for your emotional well being too. I don't mean to sound naive or overly simplistic, but if everyone made a commitment to healthier eating and drinking i think it would solve a whole lot of our problems - including bringing down the overall costs of health care. I say this mostly sarcastically, but in some way i feel that people who eat and drink like crap should have to pay higher taxes - there is no doubt their eating habits cause a greater economic burden on society.

Abuse led UK woman to kill disabled daughter, self
Lexica
by Lexica  10-1-2009    1
More: Pilkington's son Anthony, now 19, also was abused over the years. He was once taken to a shed at knifepoint and locked in by the gang — some of whose members were as young as 10. Later, he was attacked with an iron bar. The inquest in Loughborough, in central England, heard that 33 calls to police did not result in any prosecutions for bullying or harassment. In one case police reported back that Pilkington had been "overreacting" — in another case she was simply told to draw her curtains. The inquest — which under British law must be held when someone dies unexpectedly, violently or of unknown causes — ruled that police's failure to respond to the family's pleas for help contributed to their deaths. False Flag Flu (H1n1) prompts changes to Mental Health Act
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-25-2009    2
I started to comment but couldn't really add to these. Is it right that swine flu should affect health regulations? Your comments (terms and conditions apply): "Absolutely not, especially if these authorities redefine 'mental illness' to include being opposed to the government's official stories about the swine flu. When governments remove civil rights, and arbitrarily change laws so as to deny due process of law, we are automatically living under a dictatorship. Citizens of any nation which allow such nefarious backdoor assaults on their freedoms will have their indifference rewarded with tyranny" – Dee Nicholson, Canada "No. absolutely not. In the event of staff shortages, what we don't need is less thorough assessment! Swine flu seems to be the 'new terrorism' allowing the state to impose 'fear based' measures that would otherwise seem unthinkable" – Christian Thompson, Yorkshire "Tyranny, fascism and eugenicism in action" – Scott, Teesside

Republicans only want government to intervene when they suffer
zizzy
by zizzy  9-14-2009    3
Suddenly, spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on something other than Star Wars wasn't such a terrible idea. years ago, Wellstone carefully spelled out to the New York Times how he and his conservative colleague had joined together on the issue of mental healthcare. "There has been a personal, crystallizing experience in each of our lives. You almost wish it didn't have to work that way, that all of us would care deeply anyway about people who were vulnerable and not getting the care they need. But this kind of thing happens a lot in politics for fully human reasons." If the Republican right manages to kill healthcare reform this year, then perhaps some brave Democrat should introduce a new kind of bill -- cutting off every member of Congress from the "public option" .

Once in Christchurch, the couple were told by CYF that they would not be reunited with the children. According to Family Court advocate Peter Burns, who befriended the couple shortly after they moved south, Chamberlain then began to self-harm.~~~ Somerville could not read or write and suffered mental health problems~~~ Somerville and Chamberlain returned to Taupo to try to get their kids back. Chamberlain was hired at her old job at McDonald's and Somerville delivered pamphlets.~~~ This time they stayed for about six to eight months and then returned to Christchurch, apparently having given up their quest for the children~~

“We The People”
merrie
by merrie  8-30-2009    2
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel is the “Special Advisor for Health Policy” for your administration. Emanuel wants doctors to look beyond individual human needs and consider “social justice.” Within his twisted mindset, it’s perfectly humane to suggest that doctors center their focus on hard, cold calculations that place more value on bureaucratically-defined budgets than people. The money could be better spent elsewhere, they are told. " View YouTube Presumptuously, Dr. Emanuel believes that communitarianism is above reproach. It should guide decisions on who gets care. Such detached opinions lead him to say that medical care should be reserved for the non-disabled, not given to those who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens. For example, he would not provide health services to patients with dementia and other serious mental challenges. Excerpts from The American Thinker: “Manufactured Healthcare Crisis,” by Jim Simpson "

The Joker Doesn’t Seem To Understand Competition, So He Will Prohibit It
merrie
by merrie  8-27-2009
In place of the variety of products that competition would generate, we would be forced “choose” among virtually identical insurance plans. Government would define these plans down to the last detail. Every one would have at least the same “basic” coverage, including physical exams, maternity benefits, well-baby care, alcoholism treatment, and mental-health services. Consumers could not buy a cheap, high-deductible catastrophic policy. Every insurance company would have to use an identical government-designed pricing structure. Prices would be the same for sick and healthy. In this respect, it wouldn’t matter whether or not Congress created a “public option,” a government insurance plan. In either case, bureaucrats would dictate virtually every aspect of the health-insurance business. What Obama says in favor of a public option " as of today, at least " tells us how little he understands competition.

"NO WONDER OUR PREMIUMS ARE SO HIGH!" ==== So instead of scrapping our current system in exchange for a nationalized one - let's just fix what we got - a whole lot cheaper and it wouldn't piss so many folks off.

flag@whitehouse.gov Throws 3rd Party Groups Under The Bus in Email-Gate
merrie
by merrie  8-21-2009    3
The White House told FOX News that third-party groups sending online petitions to the official administration Web site could be to blame for a rash of e-mails that have gone out to people who never requested them. The theory is that these groups are including the names and e-mails of members and petition-signers along with the petitions themselves, in turn embedding those e-mails into the White House distribution list. Are there other data mining methods that the White House used to attain individuals emails? Many people who have received the unwanted WH emails have stated that they they’re not members of any organization and have not been advocating for any cause. “I find it very disturbing and a little scary to say the least,” said Sarah Griffith, who got a widely circulated e-mail on health care reform from senior adviser David Axelrod last week. “I have no idea how they got my e-mail address, and they have it.”
