POPSResearch: Stereotypes Loom Larger As Our Brains Age
More: The second paper… contains a way around this problem.… "with explicit labeling, older adults were able to discount their stereotypes and avoid processing difficulties when subsequent stereotype-inconsistent information was encountered… when counter-stereotypical information is explicitly provided at encoding (that is, the first stage of the memory process, in which stimuli are initially registered), older adults are no more likely than younger adults to rely on stereotypes, and are similarly capable of altering their interpretation of a situation when information suggests that information is incorrect." In real life, of course, no one is pointing out biased statements as they emerge from the mouths or friends, family members or talk-show hosts. So for older adults, the best advice might be to avoid acquaintances who speak in stereotypes. This research suggests prejudice can be contagious, and we become more susceptible as our brains age.

POPSMemories "One fascinating feature of remembering is how a cue from the external world can cause us to suddenly remember something from years ago. For example, returning to where you once lived or went to school may bring back memories of events experienced long ago. Sights, sounds, and smells can all trigger recall of long dormant events. These experiences point to the critical nature of retrieval in remembering." *Like my Momma baking cookies*

POPSPlay controls impulsive behavior
"46 percent of kindergarten teachers said that at least half the kids in their classes had problems following directions. In another study, Head Start teachers reported that more than a quarter of their students exhibited serious self-control-related negative behaviors, like kicking or threatening other students, at least once a week. Walter Gilliam, a professor at Yale’s child-study center, estimates that each year, across the country, more than 5,000 children are expelled from pre-K programs because teachers feel unable to control them." Do these statistics sounds familiar? If you have a child in elementary school or preschool, you may have to deal with your child being criticized for their impulsive behavior. They might even be given a diagnosis or put in special "resource" education programs. I don't blame the educational programs or even political policy on education for the problems are children are experiencing in schools. I don't blame the mental health professionals f

POPSVaccine & Gulf War syndrome Swine flu vaccine
Theory of Squalene's Action The fact that squalene is a biological compound naturally found in the body is likely the reason it can be so dangerous when injected. When eaten or self-manufactured, squalene arrives in a normal way that doesn't arouse the immune system. However, if the immune system comes into contact with it in conjunction with the injury of injection, it can be taken as an intruder. This sensitizes the immune system into attacking squalene anywhere it's found, thus starting a process of self-destruction, the very definition of an autoimmune disorder. Current Status of Squalene Squalene is approved for use in the European Union, and is now included in the Novartis adjuvant called MF59. This adjuvant is used in the EU-approved influenza vaccine. The FDA has approved fast tracking for development of influenza vaccines. Pharmaceutical corporations Sinovac, Baxter, and Novartis have all announced their plans to have their vaccines available by this autumn. All of the

POPSTweeting our brain cells away Though i'm no scientist - and i'd certainly word it a bit differently - i share these sentiments about twitter. To be clear, I think there are many positive aspects of twitter too, but this is certainly one of my criticisms/concerns. I recommend reading the rest of this article...it's thought provoking and insightful about how different sources of entertainment and communication affect us (Twitter, Facebook, video games, etc.)

POPSOsama, Saddam, and Inferred Justification We argue that the primary causal agent for misperception is not the presence or absence of correct information but a respondent's willingness to believe particular kinds of information. Our explanation draws on a psychological model of information processing that scholars have labeled motivated reasoning. This model envisions respondents as processing and responding to information defensively, accepting and seeking out confirming information, while ignoring, discrediting the source of, or arguing against the substance of contrary information (DiMaggio 1997; Kunda 1990; Lodge and Tabor 2000). The above quote, as the rest of the article explains why Willy hates sociology so much. It proves him wrong every single time!

POPS"The Masada MYTH" by Nachman Ben-Yehuda, Israeli sociologist
"In 73 AD, legend has it, 960 Jewish rebels under siege in the ancient desert fortress of Masada committed suicide (in conflict with Judaism’s teachings) rather than surrender to a Roman legion. Recorded in only one historical source, the story of Masada was obscure for centuries. Ben-Yehuda tracks the process by which Masada became an ideological symbol for the State of Israel, the dramatic subject of movies and miniseries, a shrine venerated by generations of Zionists and Israeli soldiers, and the most profitable tourist attraction in modern Israel. "Placing the story in a larger historical, sociological, and psychological context, Ben-Yehuda draws upon theories of collective memory and mythmaking to analyze Masada’s crucial role in the nation-building process of modern Israel and the formation of a new Jewish identity. An expert on deviance and social control, he looks in particular at how a military failure was fabricated as a heroic tale."

POPSNicotinic B2 Receptor's Role In Hyperactivity (cont) It has been proposed that the alteration of behavioral adaptation in ß2−/− mice, coupled with unimpaired memory and anxiety, may model cognitive impairment observed in human disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) , or even in autism . This proposition relies upon the idea that behavioral flexibility is controlled by an adequate hierarchization of motivations, a process known to mobilize prefrontal and cingulate cortex. ADHD symptoms such as inattention lack of inhibitory control, and hyperactivity and prefrontal involvement indeed resemble ß2−/− behavioral deficits, and fit well with nAChR localization and function. Yet, the possible contribution of prefrontal cortex and higher-level top-down processes in open-field behaviors is at this stage not clear.

POPSReplay During Sleep Consolidates Memories (Cont) During sleep, the hippocampus, a brain region important in learning and memory, repeatedly “replays” brain activity from recent awake experiences. This replay process is believed to be important for memory consolidation. In the new study at the University of Arizona they found reduced replay activity during sleep in old compared to young rats, and rats with the least replay activity performed the worst in tests of spatial memory.

POPSUsing pot as a teen may affect thinking The researcher said he believes illicit use of THC during adolescence produces persistent changes in the brain that sensitize females to the negative effects of THC later in life. A group of 12 female rats, 35 days old -- an age equivalent to that of human teenagers about to undergo puberty -- began to be exposed to THC chronically for 40 days. Half had had their ovaries removed when they were 30 days old, half retained their ovaries. The day after the 12 females finished the period of exposure, they underwent an extensive training process consisting of pressing colored keys in a specific sequence in order to obtain food pellets. The female rats went from a 25 percent error rate to 50 percent error rate, Winsauer told United Press International. The study was presented at Experimental Biology 2009 as part of the scientific program of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in New Orleans.

POPSSleep Clears Way for New Learning This research was done on fruit flies. "Shaw says studying fruit flies in an effort to understand the human sleep-learning connection is less of a leap than one might think" "Mednick explains that a typical sleep cycle involves 10 to 20 minutes of drowsiness and very light sleep, followed by an hour or so of very deep sleep, followed by REM period, when dreaming occurs. Over the course of a night, the cycle repeats, with the length of deep sleep decreasing and REM sleep increasing. A lot of people are walking around sleep deprived, and the 20-minute nap can really help to shake off that middle-of-the afternoon exhaustion,” she says. “But it appears that longer sleep is needed for establishing the connections involved in creative or complex learning.”

POPSResearch shows why you should believe your eyes Becky Heaver says: "It's really interesting to find that pupils dilate more when people view previously learned items, even when they are pretending not to remember them. This could have implications for preventing fraudulent claims of feigning amnesia for financial reward."
