READ THE 26-PAGE REPORTpdf. READ KAREN IGNAGNI’S 2-PAGE MEMO TO MEMBER PRESIDENTS AND CEOs. http://bit.ly/2QirZ. KEY GRAF: “Between 2010 and 2019 the cumulative increases in the cost of a typical family policy under this reform proposal will be approximately $20,700 more than it would be under the current system.” TNR’s Jonathan Cohn -- in “Is the Insurance Industry Declaring War?” -- sees “some pretty questionable assumptions.” Excerpts below. Cohn here. THE NARRATIVE -- L.A. Times A1 tease: “An about-face by insurers: After working with the White House to overhaul healthcare, the insurance industry now plans to fight the reform effort.” TALKRADIO ALERT -- USA Today A1 tease: “Benefits in health bill not immediate: Tax credits for insurance won’t start until 2013; tax hikes to pay for changes kick in right away.” THE WHITE HOUSE FEELS “MISLED” BY THE AHIP SALVO, reports POLITICO’s Carrie Budoff Brown: “The report will drop ahead of a crucial vote on the bill . . .

Obama Administration and Medical Marijuana
iulawboy
by iulawboy  10-19-2009    1
Good to see some progress on this issue. I think that, given current law, this policy strikes a good balance. It recognizes that recreational use of marijuana is illegal but that there are medicinal benefits of using this drug that should not be ignored. We don't allow recreational use of morphine, but we don't deny that the drug is useful. We can at least do that for pot.

GOP House members call for investigation of Muslim political activity
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-16-2009    1
Just to underscore how extremist the House GOP caucus is, this hysteria is all based on a new book entitled "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America." That's the source which these House members are using. In fact, one of the GOP House members, Rep. Sue Myrick of North Carolina, wrote the foreword to the book. One of the two authors of that book, Dave Gaubatz, maintains this website, where he's hawking the book through Paypal. In 2006, Gaubatz created a project called "Mapping Sharia in America", the purpose of which was to create a comprehensive map of every mosque and Islamic school in the U.S. This is what he wrote: It is our task to conduct an extensive mapping of all the Islamic day schools, mosques, and other identifiable organizations in the US and to determine which ones teach or preach Islamic law, Sharib.

Bill O'Reilly Claims, "There was no cheerleading of President Bush on this network"
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-14-2009    2
Oy. Where to begin. Over the years, there's been a mountain of evidence amassed -- both here at C&L as well as such sites as Media Matters and ThinkProgress -- demonstrating Fox News' extraordinary right-wing bias, and its utter lack of anything approaching fairness or balance. Indeed, Fox's adoption of the phrase "fair and balanced" has transformed it into a popular reference to up-is-down Newspeak. The fact that O'Reilly blithely dismisses this mountain as the product of a "far left bias" by those groups is itself clear evidence of his own bias: It's clear he a priori dismisses any facts produced by such groups, regardless of their actual validity.

Libertarian Group To Sue Administration for Failing to Disclose Global Warming Docs
merrie
by merrie  10-1-2009    2
Moreover, Treasury redacted portions of the documents. One internal memo on cap-and-trade said that "given the administration's proposal to auction all emission allowances, a cap-and-trade program could generate federal receipts on the order of $100 to $200 billion annually," but the Department blacked out the $100 billion-$200 billion figure. Horner said Treasury redacted the figure because it was "highly embarrassing" for the administration. Days later, Treasury re-released the same documents without any portions redacted. Treasury said they are currently considering the appeal.

Libs Finally See Bush Admin Prosecuted for "Torture" [FICTIONAL]

Oh hell, more liberal porn. Libs should also consider prosecuting America's 43rd president for directly liberating more people (over 60 million) from tyranny than any leader since Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Or how about we prosecute him for saving millions of lives in Africa and for asking the Congress to commit $15 billion over five years ... to turn the tide against AIDS in the most afflicted nations of Africa and the Caribbean? Sound good to you libs? Dream on fools.

Dealth Panels Liar Also Worked With Big Tobacco to Tell Lies that Torpedoed Clinton Health Plan

She's the right wing hack who propagated a purposely misleading article in The New Republic that was used to torpedo the Clinton health plan, and more recently the author of the "death panels" lie. Report: ‘Death panels’ author worked with big tobacco to scuttle health reform
zizzy
by zizzy  9-21-2009    1
Susie Madrak, in her blog at Crooks and Liars, cites key parts of the Rolling Stone article: W]hat has not been reported until now is that McCaughey’s writing was influenced by Phillip Morris, the world’s largest tobacco company, as part of a secret campaign to scuttle Clinton’s health care reform. (The measure would have been funded by a huge increase in tobacco taxes.) In an internal company memo from March 1994, the tobacco giant detailed its strategy to derail Hillarycare through an alliance with conservative think tanks, front groups and media outlets. Integral to the company’s strategy, the memo observed, was an effort to “work on the development of favorable pieces” with “friendly contacts in the media.” The memo, prepared by a Phillip Morris executive, mentions only one author by name:

Administration Privately Admits Cap-And-Trade Could Cost Families $1,761 A Year: FOIA Documents
merrie
by merrie  9-16-2009    2
So there you have it, from an internal Treasury Department document that cap-and-trade could generate federal receipts, i.e. tax revenue, in the range of $100 to $200 billion a year. Does that cost sound familiar to you? The Heritage Foundation has long predicted that: "The annual cost of emissions permits to energy users will be at least $100 billion by 2012 and could exceed $390 billion by 2035." This raises a whole other issue, that the $100 to $200 billion estimate by Treasury has no date or timeline of any kind. While Heritage follows the trajectory through to 2035, and even to 2050, the Treasury Department doesn't provide any further analysis or calculations. In a different memo, prepared by President Obama's transition team after the election, they throw this out there: "Economic costs will likely be on the order of 1% of GDP, making them equal in scale to all existing environmental regulation." That's another prediction offered up without any details as to . . .
