Is It a Matter of Bite the Hand That Fed
benaloy
by benaloy  12-16-2009
Bankers are qualified lot --- They are Greedy too! Are there non-greedy persons to replace the greedy ? No ! So ? Change the system !! Harsher Punishments have answered !! But the Legislators will NEVER pass such a stringent bill --- for those crooked politicians too will be caught up ! The Public can force the Legislators to pass the bill --- but Public is always lethargic and aloof from politics --- Public fear to enter politics as the Liars, Cheaters and Loud Mouths have taken over the system !

Part 2 The Marijuana Trick
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  10-21-2009    1
In September of 1937, hemp became illegal. The most useful crop known became a drug and our planet has been suffering ever since. Congress banned hemp because it was said to be the most violence-causing drug known. Anslinger, head of the Drug Commission for 31 years, promoted the idea that marihuana made users act extremely violent. In the 1950s, under the Communist threat of McCarthyism, Anslinger now said the exact opposite. Marijuana will pacify you so much that soldiers would not want to fight. Read MORE at source..........

Report: smoking bans protect nonsmokers from heart attacks
Lexica
by Lexica  10-15-2009
More: While heavier exposure to secondhand smoke is worse, there's no safe level…even less than an hour's exposure might be enough to push someone already at risk of a heart attack over the edge. That's because within minutes, the smoke's pollution-like small particles and other substances can start constricting blood vessels and increasing blood's propensity to clot — key heart attack factors. Yet many people don't know they have heart disease until their first heart attack, making it important for everyone to avoid secondhand smoke, Benowitz said. "Even if you think you're perfectly healthy, secondhand smoke could be a potential threat to you," he said. Many of the IOM committee members initially were skeptical they'd find much benefit from the bans, said statistician Stephen Feinberg of Carnegie Mellon University. He proclaimed himself "the resident skeptic" who changed his mind. "There was a clear and consistent effect of smoking bans," he said.

Cyber-Security Bill Permits President to "Seize Temporary Control of Private Sector Networks During A So-Called... Emergency
merrie
by merrie  8-29-2009    1
The bill would allow the president to unilaterally declare "a cybersecurity emergency" for non-governmental computer networks in order to respond to a threat. Other sections of the bill go even further: they proscribe government-controlled certification programs that license computer security professionals. And it goes on to demand that certain, privately-owned computer systems and networks be managed only by those professionals who have achieved the federal certification. In all seriousness: if you were elected President and wanted to transform the U.S. into a third-world banana republic like Venezuela, how would your policies differ from those of Obama?

More: That might not sound like a big deal until one considers an example: "First, we can immediately find his political orientation based on his strong opinions about Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in Our Times and Fahrenheit 9/11. Strong guesses about his religious views can be made based on his ratings on Jesus of Nazareth and The Gospel of John. He did not like Super Size Me at all; perhaps this implies something about his physical size? Both items that we found with predominantly gay themes, Bent and Queer as folk were rated one star out of five. He is a cultish follower of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This is far from all we found about this one person, but having made our point, we will spare the reader further lurid details."…Back in 2000, a Carnegie Mellon researcher took a look at 1990 US census data and concluded that 87 percent of all Americans could be uniquely identified based on only three items: ZIP code, gender, and date of birth.

What Do Dreams Mean? Whatever Your Bias Says
ofcapri
by ofcapri  3-10-2009
Tough questions, but social scientists now have answers — and really, it’s about time. For thousands of years, dreamers have had little more to go on than the two-gate hypothesis proposed in “The Odyssey.” After Penelope dreams of the return of her lost-long husband, she’s skeptical and says that only some dreams matter.
