Brian Froud: Portrait Painter Of Faery
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  11-26-2009    1
More from the site: Brian's deep involvement with folklore and myth began during his art–student days, when he came across a book by Arthur Rackham in his college library. This master illustrator evoked the wonder of childhood with fey and richly animate landscapes, re–awakening Brian's interest in fairy tales and their imagery. He began to study the folklore of Britain, and then the tales of other lands — fascinated by the ways the magical traditions in all cultures shared common roots. When he left college, he spent five years working in the field of commercial illustration in London, but he continued to paint mythic images and to develop a distinctive style of his own. In the mid–Seventies, Brian's early mythic art was published in Once Upon a Time (a survey of modern English illustration) and collected in The Land of Froud, both from David Larkin's Peacock Press.

romania's bran castle returned to the habsurgs
doodleicious
by doodleicious  7-12-2009    4
wow- if these walls could talk...?....located on the border between Transylvania and Wallacha in central Romania, the Bran Castle is commonly referred to as "Dracula's Castle" and marketed as the home of the titular character in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula- however there is evidence that Stoker never knew anything about this castle- and Vlad the Impaler, never resided in the castle either.... it will be turned into a museum dedicated to the legend and history of Dracula.

No SUVs Around During the Roman Global Warming ‘Crisis’
merrie
by merrie  4-1-2009    4
This warming trend would last almost 400 years, a well documented era known as the Medieval Warm Period. Once again, as temperatures rose harvests and populations grew. Vineyards made their way into Northern Europe, including Britain. Art and science flourished in what we now know as the Renaissance. Then around 1300 A.D. things cooled drastically. This cold spell would last almost 500 years, a severe climate event known as the Little Ice Age. Millions died in famine as glaciers advanced all over the world. The plague returned. In Greenland, the Norse colony that had been established during the Medieval Warming froze and starved. Arctic pack ice descended south, pushing Inuit peoples to the shores of Scotland. People ice skated on the Thames; they walked from Staten Island to Manhattan over a frozen New York Harbor. The year 1816 was remembered as the year without a summer, with some portions of the Northern Hemisphere seeing snowfall in June.

The slow death of handwriting
infidel70
by infidel70  2-26-2009    13
"The way handwriting is taught has undoubtedly changed. At Ms Florey's school in 1950s America, a nun beat time with a stick as the class copied letters from the blackboard. It was not a place for individuals. There was a right way to form letters and very many wrong ways. " More famous handwriting samples at BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7907888.stm

Is the Sagrada Familia being banalised in the name of tourism?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  12-8-2008
Another example: "Michelangelo, another great religious architect, designed the dome of St Peter's but died before he could erect it. His designs were adapted by later architects. Does this make St Peter's a botched job, a betrayal? No. We experience it for what it is - a great collective religious work in which the individual contributions of Michelangelo, Bramante, Raphael, Sangallo and Bernini are visible, yet at the same time subsumed in the common purpose. Significantly, Michelangelo for once set aside his habitual rivalries at St Peter's and incorporated into his own contribution designs by his enemy Bramante. This was the place to work together, not against one another." When you see it, it is really the work of a genius...

The cognitive neuroscience of magic
Mohir
by Mohir  8-8-2008    2
Magic combines multiple principles of attention, awareness, trust and perception to both overtly and covertly misdirect the audience. Whether they are used for performance art or as a means to illicitly separate victims from their money and valuables, the accomplished performer uses robust and intuitive manipulative devices that are of great interest to neuroscientists pursuing the neural underpinnings of cognition, memory, sensation, social attachment, causal inference and awareness.
