ANIMALS’ ALTRUISM AND ABILITY TO EMPATHIZE
Socratoad
by Socratoad  11-27-2009    1
Ethologists use the terms care-giving, or epimeletic behavior, and care-soliciting, or et-epimeletic behavior, to identify those behaviors that underlie the altruism we see in various species that means that they do have the capacity to empathize. Skeptics dismiss all of this as anthropomorphic and scientifically unproven, and it disturbs me to read some professional comments on this topic. For example, veterinarian John S. Parker stated that "Pets can and often do react to their owners’ distress or discomfort, but that is not to be confused with experiencing the emotion of empathy" (Letter in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, June 1, 2006, pp 1677-1678). Aside from contending that animals "do not have the cognitive capacity to put themselves in our place", he incorrectly sees empathy not as a process or affective state but as an actual emotion, which it is not. Animal ethics philosopher Dr. Bernard E. Rollin’s response (in this same Journal, on p.1678), stati

Charitable Organization Funds To Preserve Journalism?
merrie
by merrie  10-21-2009    1
The report is asking “philanthropic organizations to support local reporting.” That’s where the tax comes in " or fees " to be gathered in some fashion from telecom or internet providers.” I might not object if a clear definition of “journalism,” and adherence to that definition, must be met to get the nonprofit status. Of course, it all depends on the definition of the trade " like defining what “is” is. Next will be White House ordered legislation assuring that FOX News is excluded from “nonprofit status.” I cannot credit this report by linking to it, because the “original source” says I cannot (but never mind, they want me to donate to keep their less-than-honest endeavors alive) but go to Breitbart.com type in some keywords and you’ll find it.

Fertility Experts Question Medical Ethics of Transferring Embryos to California Mom
iamonetoo
by iamonetoo  2-20-2009    1
"On Feb. 6, the Medical Board of California announced plans to investigate the fertility doctor who treated Suleman. The board did not identify the doctor, but the Today show identified the clinic as the West Coast IVF Clinic in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I am deeply disappointed that any fertility clinic in the United States, or anywhere, would do this," says Colorado reproductive endocrinologist Eric Surrey, MD, who is a past president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART)." The eight California babies are all breathing on their own, which is a very good sign, but they were a full 10 weeks early at the time of their birth and weighed between 1.8 and 3.4 pounds. "Multiple-birth experts say it may be years before the extent of their medical issues are known."

Organs for drinkers
balthazarus
by balthazarus  2-15-2009    3
"..And the mother of a young woman whose organs helped to keep five people alive after she died said it was "offensive, terrible and unfair" that an increasing proportion of livers were going to people with serious alcohol problems." I find it as a complicated issue. On the surface the answer here seems simple (no organ for drinkers), but it is a question of where can we draw the line? what is the ethical model that one can use? is there one? the question is of course focusing with the scarcity of resources. So with the rising costs of health should we treat those who smoke? or eat junk food? should we treat a disabled baby that his father did not want to go through abortion? All these and i am sure there are more examples, are to stress the need for a paradigm that one can work with.

Talking Heads Resort To Repugnant Demagogic Attacks On Octuplets' Mother
GlennFrancoSimmons
by GlennFrancoSimmons  2-6-2009
Anyone in media making prejudicial and racist comments should be taken to task by other media, but don't expect that to happen. Why? Because media fail to do what the Society of Professional Journalists' (I belong to SPJ) Code of Ethics tells them to do: "Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media." As American and foreign media carried sensational headlines, the lives of these babies were held in the balance, and only one talk-show host got it right, and that was Mike Gallagher, who said that each of those children is a gift from God and that we should be praying for those children. I would take his comment one step further: We should also pray for the mother and praise her for not aborting a single child.

Massage Therapy School - What You Need To Know
grover69
by grover69  1-22-2009
In order to incorporate a lucrative living as a massage therapist, you will need some training. That will require going to massage therapy school. The cost to go can start in the mid four figures to the mid five figures ($5,000 - $15,000). However, if opt to go to a private college, the costs will be much more. Make sure that the school you attend is accredited. You need to be at an educational facility where your classes will be honored elsewhere.

Give me back my kidney, or pay the consequences!
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  1-17-2009
There is neither ethical nor legal justification for demanding the kidney or compensation. An organ donation is a gift. We have specifically prohibited the selling of organs for just this reason. Ethically, we believe that the only acceptable reason for donating an organ to another person is altruism. You give the organ because you want the other person to get it. What happens after that is irrelevant. If you cannot sue to get your kidney back because you now have a medical need for it, you certainly do not have grounds to sue to get it back simply because you are angry with the recipient. This case is not about the commodification of organs, either. No only do we prohibit the selling of organs, but we hold both the donor and recipient harmless in the action. The donor cannot sue the recipient for the costs associated with the donation, and the recipient cannot sue the donor if the donor had an undiagnosed medical problem that was transmitted with the organ. Denmark to Ban Mutilation of Male Child Penis

The usual whining victimhood cry anti-Semitism as if this intended ban was directed towards them alone. They conveniently forget that Muslims also practice this barbarity and there are far more Muslims in the EU. Even when they are not victims, they refuse to share their perception of victimhood with others. Interference with children's bodies in ANY circumstance must be banned in all cases. Sexual interference with children's bodies is just one small step onwards as is easily proven by the many REAL victims of these religious maniacs.

Can a 13-year-old refuse treatment?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  11-12-2008    2
"How old is old enough to decide whether to live or die? Priscilla Alderson, professor of childhood studies at the Institute of Education, says her research had found that even very young children could give or withhold informed consent to medical treatment. Decisions about treatment, or even about whether to live or die, cannot be based on age, she argues. "Our research has found that age isn't a helpful criterion - but experience is," she says. She has found that even at four years old, a child who has diabetes can understand the principle of insulin treatment - and it is vital they do understand or they risk interpreting the pain they as some kind of parental punishment."

Investing in Obama
sillysam
by sillysam  8-25-2008
Last Friday’s Washington Post offered more information on Blackwell, a former partner in his father’s consulting firm, Blackwell Consulting. The brief Post piece, “Contracts Went to Longtime Donor,” mentions that the firm won contracts totaling nearly $650,000 from the University of Chicago Medical Center. It happened because of a minority-owned business outreach program started by the newly promoted Michelle Obama. The elder Blackwell says that without that program, “ hey might not have ever thought to include Blackwell Consulting.” It also didn’t hurt that the younger Blackwell had been underwriting Obama’s political and personal life. In early 2003, after one of the Killerspin ping-pong tournaments he had helped taxpayers subsidize, Obama was interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times on the subject of the younger Blackwell’s entrepreneurship. “I would never bet against Robert on one of his ideas,” Obama said. “He’s extremely good at coming up with moneymaking ideas and implementing
