POPS Phoenix Ready For Mars Landing Sunday
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter camera run showed the weather will be good on Sunday, with no significant dust storms around the landing site, said Phoenix principal investigator Peter Smith. U.S. scientists will be joined by their counterparts from Canada and Europe in running the mission robotically from a headquarters in Tucson, Ariz. Canada's contribution is a Meteorological Station, or Met, designed to monitor changes in water abundance, dust, temperature and other variables in the Martian atmosphere. Of 11 previous attempts to land spacecraft on Mars, only five have succeeded. The Canadian Space Agency and a team headed by York University — and including contributions from the University of Alberta, Dalhousie University, the Geological Survey of Canada and instrument-maker Optech and — will oversee the science operations of the station, which was built by Canadarm maker MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., also known as MDA, of Richmond, B.C.

POPSMore on shooting down satellite: real reasons Regardless of the central rationale for the anticipated intercept of a dying satellite, the action almost certainly would offer the Pentagon useful data on conducting antisatellite missions, our own Jeffrey Lewis tells Global Security Newswire. The dead U.S. satellite is to be struck at a significantly lower altitude than other space assets. However, that could prove even more of a challenge to the Navy than any future antisatellite operation because spacecraft on lower orbits typically travel at higher speeds, Lewis said. The upcoming shot — using a sea-based Standard Missile 3 developed for regional and tactical missile defense — could thus prove to be a useful test for less demanding intercepts that might someday follow, he said.

POPSRussian FM says U.S. wants Czech radar to spy on Russia Following the U.S. delegation's visit to Azerbaijan, deputy director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Brigadier General Patrick O'Reilly, said the U.S. was studying the radar's parameters, and would analyze them later. However, MDA director, Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry Obering III, said on Tuesday that the Gabala radar may only be used as an integral part of U.S. missile defenses in Europe, and could not serve as an alternative to the European shield. The Russian foreign minister reiterated that Russia continued to regard the placement of a U.S. missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic as a threat to its national security and Moscow had been preparing an adequate response to Washington's move. "We see a threat and we are preparing a response to it," he said.

POPSThe worst f-bomb I'm all for supporting the MDA (my father-in-law passed from the disease the day my daughter was born - seriously), but someone needs to speak out against Mr. Lewis. It is unacceptable to use this f-bomb - ever. When ignorant people are still using this nasty word, people will still not understand love comes in all forms.
