Interesting article! Learning mathematics, in particular statistics, is essential in times where everything is measured or quantified. We need people capable of analyzing data to identify trends and make accurate predictions.

Baseball Predictions!
kaferico
by kaferico  4-28-2009
Recently, one of my students (an avid Marlin fan and knowing that I am also a baseball fan) asked me which teams were making the playoffs this year. Making the clarification that is too early to make such predictions, I chose the following teams: Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers, and Cardinals from the National League and Blue Jays, Indians, Athletics and Red Sox (this hurts since I am a Yankees' fan!). However, my predictions were based on gut instincts, but if I would have read professor Bruce Bukiet's mathematical model to make baseball predictions, I probably would feel more confident about my predictions. His mathematical model to make baseball predictions have been pretty much accurate every year. Predicting certain events or behaviors based on particular data is one of the most practical applications for learning mathematics. Learn more about Bukiet's mathematical model by clicking the science daily web site link below.

Global Warming Lies Will Bring On An Economic Recession
merrie
by merrie  11-17-2008    5
October 2008 went down as Fairbanks’ fourth-coldest October on record since 1904, according to meteorologist Rick Thoman with the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. The average temperature of 15.1 degrees was 8.4 degrees below normal. … There were 13 days when the low temperature was zero or colder, the most sub-zero days in October since 1965, which holds the record of 14 sub-zero days in October and ranks as the second-coldest October on record. These 2008 records challenging levels going back to 1904 and 1965 prove that CO2 levels cannot be the driver of global temperatures claimed by the alarmists on the left and inside the UN. CO2 levels are very high compared to 1904, let alone 1965, and so is the world’s human population. For example, in 1900 the world population was 1.65 billion people, in 1965 it was 3.33 billion and in 2005 it was 6.45 billion.

Prediction: XXX XXX XXX Wins 281-257
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2008    1
From this base case (XXX XXX XXX winning with an 11 point cushion), there are a couple deviations worth mentioning, given that Virginia and Pennsylvania seem to represent the most tenuous wins for McCain. * If McCain loses Virginia (13 votes), he can still win by picking up any of the three western battlegrounds (NM, CO, or NV). Of these, at least Colorado appears plausible, so Virginia isn't necessarily a killer. * If McCain loses Pennsylvania (21 votes), he needs to pick up any two of those western states. This is a stretch, so losing Pennsylvania would appear nearly lethal. The caveat here is that McCain could lose Pennsylvania and pick up only Colorado, which would yield a 269-269 tie. * If McCain loses both Virginia and Pennsylvania, President Obama is a near mathematical certainty.

Times rehashes sim story
markbaard
by markbaard  8-19-2007    1
The Times reported this story several years ago, but the topic (with the emergence of Second Life and Ray Kurzweil's predictions for the Singularity), seems even more relevant today. Perhaps the only question is whether we are already in the Matrix, or are destined for it.
