More: it is the absolute, final, and total end of childhood, of any sense of innocence and wonder. Perhaps the girl in California had already lost hers. Perhaps her mother manipulated the situation. I, frankly, don’t give a good goddamn. That girl is forever defined by that moment, as I have been defined by my own moment of terror and pain and horror. There is, for me, no place on this whole planet that is safe. I move farther and farther from the center of things. I find myself in hotel rooms or houses in remote places where nobody knows where I am, and very few even care. I have been an alcoholic, a drug user, a sexual deviant and addict. I have tried with what heart I have left to be kind and generous and loving, and I have wrecked my life and hurt people I love. I have tried to be whole, to be a regular man inside a regular man’s skin, and I have failed miserably.

Terrorists kidnap, torture boy to bully Iraqi policeman
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-7-2009    1
The attackers rigged the house with explosives and demolished it before taking off with the 6-year-old. The boy's grandmother and seven other family members rushed out of the home before it exploded. "The kidnappers called me on the phone and demanded that some prisoners that we had be released or they would slit his throat," Khidir's father says. "But I said no to the release. I would not put killers back out on the street that would hurt other Muslims. So I thought to myself, 'Let my son be a martyr.' " He even held a secret funeral for his little boy. He didn't want to tell the rest of the family that he had refused the kidnappers' ultimatum, allowing them to hope that he was still alive.

Marwa al-Sherbini: Egypt's Headscarf Martyr
zizzy
by zizzy  7-13-2009
When Sherbini's body was buried in her hometown of Alexandria on Monday, thousands turned out for the funeral, raising banners and, according to wire reports, chanting slogans such as, "The Germans are the enemies of God" and "Down with Germany But for many, Sherbini has become a convenient martyr, an easy, emotional means to an end — or a distraction from Egypt's domestic woes. "The Islamists in Egypt have already using this as a card to mobilize for the veil — not for the right of women to wear whatever they want, but in defense of the veil," Hossam el-Hamalawy, an Egyptian journalist and author of the popular blog Arabawy.org, tells TIME. But more salient than the women's dress issue is the manipulation of Sherbini as a symbol of Islam in a perceived stand-off between the Muslim world and the West

Ms Sherbini's husband was attacked by the assailant as he tried to defend his wife and was also accidentally shot by German police. He is in hospital in critical condition. This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked Thomas Steg German government spokesman The Egyptian media have expressed outrage, asking how the incident was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab", in reference to her Islamic headscarf. The German government was criticised for what was seen to be a muted reaction. On Tuesday, spokesman Thomas Steg defended the government's reaction, saying Germany had "not been silent", and that early details about the case had not been sufficiently clear for a "spontaneous reaction". "This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked," he said. He added that Chancellor Merkel would discuss the incident with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at this week's Group of Eight summit in It

Beheshti’s Ghost
merrie
by merrie  6-29-2009    1
The mosque was crowded and hot; a restless buzz filled the air. Young girls in green headscarves and chador-clad women with green wristbands were murmuring Mir Hossein Mousavi’s name. He was rumored to be on his way to make a speech here. The service started at 6 p.m. I perched myself on a ledge on the balcony corner next to the window, overlooking the podium in the men’s section below. A muezzin launched into a long prayer, followed with a eulogy in praise of Beheshti. It was getting hotter by the moment as more people pressed in. A woman next to me whispered, “Is Mousavi really coming?” I smiled reassuringly at her, though by now " an hour had passed " I began to suspect the shadowy opposition leader was a no-show. The muezzin droned on. I was getting fed up and ready to leave. Thankfully, just then it came " a roar of cheering from outside."

Iranian police clash with up to 3,000 protesters
jatfla
by jatfla  6-28-2009
Can't be officially verified because of the crack down on the media there. But from another article posted today by the AP: "Obama officials say talks with Iran still possible". From within that article: "Both Rice and David Axelrod, Obama's top adviser, said Ahmadinejad doesn't appear to have the final say over Iran's foreign policy. Axelrod, dismissing Ahmadinejad's harsh language against the U.S. and Obama as "bloviations," said being open to talks with Iran is not an effort to reward the country. "We are looking to ... sit down and talk to the Iranians and offer them two paths. And one brings them back into the community of nations, and the other has some very stark consequences," . The Iranians they would have to be speaking to are the clerics and they are more fanatical than even Ahmadinejad. (what babes)

Mir Hossein Mousavi میر حسین موسوی Is On Facebook
merrie
by merrie  6-24-2009
"We want to vote again!" We want to have the rights to our future. I think that every Iranian in Iran is a commander, a force. Every Iranian outside of iran is a representative of the people in Iran, a reporter. Every Iranian who gets killed in the streets is a martyr. They are also all media, filming with their cell phones and uploading the content onto Youtube. We need to take these videos from Youtube and send out the links- send them to the reporters. You can help the reporters who may not be able to find all the videos amongst the many being uploaded. We need to work collectively to spread the information coming out from Iran. We need to continue. Friday night, at sunset, light a candle. Think about and respect the deaths of the brave. The Iranian people are planning to do the same outside their houses, on their roofs, chanting: "Allah o Akbar. They will be chanting "Allah o Akbar" to not prove their religion, but to voice the intolerable pressures put on them by the government.

“Neda,” The Farsi Word for Voice And The Call For Freedom
merrie
by merrie  6-21-2009
I felt haunted by this face all day since I saw the video (below). I knew I was not alone. I felt this could be the incident that broke the camel’s back and unleashed the Iranians. The Supreme Leader said their would be violent consequences for protesting. He is about to learn that there are also consequences for killing a young woman - and they will be violent as well. When you look at this brave human being, her life blood poring from her beautiful young face, the life in the blood itself still fresh it has yet to turn dark, her face still flushed with the last breath of life - though you can tell her spirit has moved on - you feel the need to do something. This act of cold brutality must be avenged. Humanity cannot go down this path, where the bodies of our young litter the way for old, viscous men to hold onto power. The face of Neda could very well be the tipping point for many clerics, government leaders and military leaders.

A True Martyr
merrie
by merrie  5-10-2009    2
Like the most worthy saint, Jan Palach lived a simple life. As a boy, his father nurtured in him a keen love of history, which he went on to study at Prague's Charles University. He was known as a quiet student, strong-willed, bookish, rather serious. The turning point in Palach's life was the August 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact forces to suppress the political and cultural liberalization known as the Prague Spring. The invasion had a radicalizing impact on Palach. What he found hardest to bear was not the occupation and attack on freedom itself, but the reaction of his countrymen. In the months following the invasion, the raw passion of opposition and defiance became resignation, accommodation and lethargy. Alexander Dubcek, the Czechoslovak leader who was instrumental in the reform movement's "socialism with a human face," signed the Moscow Protocols, which were ultimately an expression of loyalty to the Soviet Union.

Haaretz: Zionist 'discrimination' against WW2 martyred converts
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  5-5-2009
Dutch recipients of Yad Vashem's highest honour are considering returning the title to protest "discrimination" against saviours of ex-Jews, said leaders of Holland's Jewish community. The protest is about a decision by Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority not to honour Non-Jewish Dutchmen who hid children of converted Jews. 230 cosignatories sent a petition to Yad Vashem asking it to reconsider and warning of the protest. The petition calls for recognizing two families, the Hollebrands and the Egginks, who hid three children from the Sanders family, which had converted to Christianity before WW2. ... Ha'aretz

Taleban to Attack America, Propaganda for "April Fools"
blueridge
by blueridge  3-31-2009    5
The major problem is the Taleban leader here is dead! This is really over-the-top, amazing that a "remote phone call" could be considered a credible source of news and published as such. The 35-year-old leader of Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan (Movement of Taleban Pakistan), made the claims after taking the highly unusual step of telephoning Western news organisations from an undisclosed location. It was him, really....back from the dead. Right! Just like the conjured up "bin Laden" tapes, the cabal of Anglo-American propagandists is trying to pull a fast one to legitimize the Bush-Obama and Britain's "war on terrorism" into Pakistan . Visit the Legitgov.org link to see the articles and case made that this is disinformation for public consumption to justify war expansion, and to re-blame Taleban for 9/11 and India attacks, while there is no hard evidence (except this phony "take responsibility" news) connecting them with any of the attacks.
