POPSAbout That Pelosi, Pickens Plan To Pick Our Pocket
but the then necessary development of the infrastructure and conversion to such energy will take even longer. We are not going to abandon gas and oil any time soon, no matter what the loudest advocates of renewable energy sources insist. As a writer noted at Fosters.com, a sane energy policy will require tuning in to a program of multiple sources. Fossil fuels -- developed and yet to be developed -- wind power nearing a scope envisioned by T. Boone Pickens, solar power, nuclear power, biomass, geothermal power and sources we haven't thought of yet are in our future - as in waaay in our future. Pickens' plan is bold — too bad it won't work The Pickens Plan isn't the boon for energy independence that it purports to be. Dallas billionaire investor and oilman-turned-wind-farmer Boone Pickens unveiled an audacious plan that he hopes will prod policymakers into a more realistic discussion of energy issues. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5882292.html

POPSGeorgian, Russian Leaders Heat Up Rhetoric: Fighting Rages On Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said he hoped the United States would help to convince Georgia to sign a legally binding agreement not to use force, while Russia's ambassador to NATO, Dmitri Rogozin, said that, until Georgian troops resume their pre-offensive positions, a cease-fire would not occur. Leaders from around the world have called on both sides to stand down, issuing statements deploring the fighting, and sending members of a delegation of high-level diplomats who hope to serve as a catalyst for a cease-fire. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili called for an immediate cease-fire Saturday, saying the current violence is not in Russia or Georgia's interest. Saakashvili asked President Medvedev to stop what he described as "this madness" and charged Russia with attempting to destroy Georgian freedom. He said that while the country should not show it is afraid - for Georgia, "This is all very hard."

POPSThe End Of Rakan Hassan's War said he suspects insurgents put a bomb in or next to the house. He believes the house was targeted either because of his associations with the Iraqi government or because the family had accepted help for Rakan from Americans. But the truth is, we don't know why. We only know Rakan is dead. Larry Ronan has been heartsick for weeks, as he awaited final word. I have been, too. Ronan is a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital with thousands of patients, but for six months in fall 2005 and winter 2006 you would have thought his only patient was Rakan. Rakan's case caught the eye of humanitarians because his shooting was captured in a series of haunting photographs by Chris Hondros, a photographer for Getty Images who was embedded with the platoon from the First Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division, which opened fire on a car they thought was carrying suicide bombers.Continued...

POPSSufi Teaching Tales Folk tales have always been used in Muslim lands as a way of teaching spiritual lessons. There are a huge variety of them full of heroes, male and female, struggling through the adventure of life with courage and dignity. Many philosophers and spiritual teachers have used such stories to highlight the journey of the soul on the return to the One. Many of them are full of humour as the silly mistakes that we often make are illustrated by characters who bring home the message that we too often follow the ego (nafs) and get ourselves into serious trouble. A lot of these stories are love stories that serve as a metaphor for the soul's longing for the Lord of the Worlds and the trials it is willi...

POPSEmotional Tempest — In A Snow Globe American-Spanish artist couple Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz from New York have been exploring tiny little dramas from our everyday madness and transformed them into short therapeutic scenes: What started as miniature snow globes a couple of years ago, has now evolved in veritable landscape panoramas that depict the elaborate bleakness of an emotional icy desert populated by all sorts of creatures. A world in everlasting winter, how grim! And at the same time, how funny! PingMag talked to Walter.

POPS20 Heads of State in Venezuela for Pact on Cheap Oil The pact has helped Chavez promote his vision of regional independence from the United States. He used the summit to blame Washington for international economic problems, and called US military spending in Iraq "madness." He also denied criticism from Venezuelan opponents who say he is giving away Venezuela's oil wealth. Reading from an opposition statement accusing him of "bribery diplomacy," Chavez mused: "It's very probable this was written in the U.S. Embassy." Some Petrocaribe member countries have the option of paying partially for oil with services or goods such as rice, bananas and sugar. To help boost agriculture, Chavez said Venezuela will donate US$460 million from its oil proceeds annually to create an aid fund providing farming supplies and machinery in the region. He also offered to supply subsidized fertilizer to other countries. ... iht Great man. Any of this in the 'free and fair' USA media? Doubt it!

POPSAnother peak? As the cost of food skyrockets for many reasons, including shortages, the cost of inputs to industrial food production are coming under stress. A 30% rise in a year is serious, 100% in a week is a mania, or major panic. We have been waiting for the other shoe to drop in so many areas, when they all do, we could be killed by a shoe shower.

POPSMichael Savage Wants to "Hang" JAG Officers This utter bullshit because it's officers like Lt. Cmdr. William C. Kuebler, "a self-described born-again Christian and conservative who has 'never voted for a Democrat'" who have the courage to challenge these kangaroo courts "designed to get criminal convictions" with "no real evidence," or the the fact that military prosecutors "launder evidence derived from torture." I suppose Savage also wants Lt. Cmdr. Charles D. Swift hanged. As the NYT reports, Swift helped "take the case of Salim Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden, to the Supreme Court. The ruling in 2006 invalidated the Bush administration's first military commission system." Lt. Col. Yvonne Bradley needs execution too, I suppose, for defending a "British resident accused of plotting with al-Qaida to bomb apartment buildings in the United States." Marine Corps Maj. Michael D. Mori defended Australian David Hicks an accused al-Qaeda trainee.
