Taliban Launches Large Coordinated Assaults
cptenaud
by cptenaud  Yesterday 10:34 PM    1
The Taliban claimed responsibility for all three attacks in Khost. Their spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahed, reached by telephone at an unknown location, said that 15 suicide bombers, equipped with machine guns and vests packed with explosives, with 30 militants backing them up, attacked the base, one of the largest foreign military bases in Afghanistan. He claimed that some of the bombers had gotten inside the base and had killed a number of American soldiers and destroyed equipment and helicopters. This last claim was denied by General Azimi of the Afghan military.

NO Filming or NO Fly.
jGrrl
by jGrrl  8-17-2008
Isn't the plane property of JetBlue thus making it private property? I record a lot of videos too so I feel for gramma but she has to realize that her age and whether or not she said she planned to use it for personal reasons do not matter. If they don't want people filming on/in their property and any altercations that occur therein then they have every right to inform her. It shouldn't matter if you're 56 or 16 - they will enforce it. Not to sound like a total jerk but how many would be saying "Oh the poor thing!" if this tale were about a 16 year old boy? Yeah, it was a bit terse the way they handled it and they could have been a little nicer overall, there was no need of the accusations and attitude, but still - its their right. We pay for the privilege of the service, using their machine for personal transport, we do not have an inherent right to fly and to disregard the rules of public vs. private property.

The World's Largest Particle Accelerator
dmtherob
by dmtherob  8-16-2008
No one really knows what the machine will give birth to. But the equations suggest that some weird stuff could be just around the corner — maybe "dark matter," the invisible stuff that seems to hang around galaxies. "It's kind of an embarrassment that we don't know what 95 percent of the universe is made of by weight," Green says. "We hope — it's possible — we may be making dark matter." Some theories say it is possible the collider will cause miniature black holes to momentarily appear. But for now, what has appeared is a table of croissants, an urn of coffee, and more people. Everyone stands around in blue hard hats. They don't talk about black holes or dark matter. A few say things like "I hope the magnet doesn't fall."

While arsenic may be toxic because of the way it substitutes phosphorous in the process of burning energy, I don't recall boiling water being too healthy either. When life on earth was just kicking off, there was little free oxygen, and plenty of boiling water. Arsenic based photosynthesis is likely to have been working long before the green/chlorophyll based photosynthesis evolved.

They used rat neurones. Maybe we'll discover what rats have been thinking, or how the nature of thinking varies from species to species, if and what significant 'character' differences there are. We may even find rats have the potential to be much smarter than we thought they were. The neurons act in response to stimuli. Maybe the best way to describe them is 'curious' It can be fairly certain there will be no official testing with human neurones, but there will be testing. I also wonder if the instinct for self preservation goes that deep - Sounds like the kind of thing that would interest the military.
