Beekeepers Tell Pesticide Firm to Buzz Off
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-4-2009    1
This is absurd! As Graham White, a beekeeper in the Scottish Borders and an environmental author states: "Putting Syngenta in charge of UK research into the causes of honeybee deaths is arguably the equivalent of putting the tobacco companies in charge of research into lung cancer." It’s a foregone conclusion that Syngenta will find that they are not responsible for the decline in bee population. This is a clear case of government in the back pocket of another corporation. And once again, the public is powerless to have any effect on stopping this travesty and government just rubs our noses in the fact.

Mummy autopsy result 'was wrong'
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-30-2009
The first scientific autopsy on an ancient Egyptian mummy probably got the cause of death wrong, research suggests. By studying the thinning of the pelvic bone, he established the woman was 50-55 when she died. He also determined that she was a mother, and overweight. He then found that she had an ovarian tumour, and concluded that this - a condition he called ovarian dropsy - probably caused her death. However, the tumour has subsequently been found to be benign, and the UCL team believe the key to the woman's death was the fact that her lungs were inflamed. Tuberculosis was widespread in ancient Egypt and can cause these symptoms.

World Radon Action Level Reduced to 2.7 to Prevent Lung Cancer
radonmitigation
by radonmitigation  9-29-2009
"All homes should be tested for radon regardless of the geographic location or type of construction. Since radon gas cannot be detected by human senses, the only way to know if a home has a radon problem is to conduct the test," according to Jamey Gelina, President of Air Quality Control; one of North America's leading radon mitigation companies. His Agency has fixed radon problems in over 20,000 buildings and houses. "We have worked with countless families who have been victims of radon-induced lung cancer which could have been prevented if they had been advised to test for radon when purchasing the homes," Mr. Gelina added. http://www.mitigationsystem.com

Hey America, WARS ARE STILL GOING ON!
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-16-2009
A comment on a clip stated: “preventable deaths…how about Heart, lung disease, cancer, etc.?” Not sure what the clipper was getting at, citing these ills; calling them preventable? Anyway, it occurred to me… what about WAR; shouldn't that be at the top of this woeful list? The Bush admin, wanted WAR so badly, they started TWO! Of course, they could, 9/11, HAPPENED! (I’m still not convinced the attack occurred without a WINK & NOD.) Now 8 yrs later and still young people die because of that infamous day. We can’t blame Bush any longer, so who should bear the brunt of accountability for the bloodletting? Obama won the election, partly due to his stance against war and now he’s ratcheting up troop levels assuring its longevity? If he continues to act like Bush when it comes to WAR; He has not only misled us, he FUCKED us royally! And although I’m charmed by his eloquence, it can’t last… We, who despise war, won’t look the other way while he sends so many to die…& OVER WHAT?

The Best Reason Ever for Health Care Reform.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-14-2009    8
Excerpt: (It's a heroic story... How is it possible that Pronovost needed to beg hospitals to adopt an essentially cost-free idea that saved so many lives? Here’s an industry that loudly protests the high cost of liability ins. and the injustice of our tort system and yet needs extensive lobbying to embrace a simple technique to save up to 100,000 people.) An alarming article; in my own experience I can count family and friends who have died or almost died due to hospital irresponsibility and negligence. My father developed the clot that killed him while in a hospital. My mother died of the mastectomy before she could die from the cancer. My father-in-law died after hospital staff yanked out his lung and put him in regular care instead of an ICU. A friend died in child birth because the hospital anaesthesiologist did not realize she was regurgitating and put her under while she was drowning in her own vomit. I wonder, is this sad enough to make the townhallers come to their senses? NO

Why is the "cure" nearly always worse than the cause?
gemfemfox

I become more concerned with modern medicine in the form of pharmaceuticals daily. They are making rash, profit motivated, decisions and the government falls in line as the tax revenue and lobby gifts/graft is running free. Get healthy, get some sun, eat fresh, local produce and quit feeding the mega-national beasts.

Computational Process Zeroes in on Top Genetic Cancer Suspects
chestnut501
by chestnut501  9-2-2009    1
The new process focuses on missense mutations, meaning protein sequences that each possess a single tiny variation from the normal pattern. A small percentage of these genetic errors can reduce the activity of proteins that usually suppress tumors or hyperactivate proteins that make it easier for tumors to grow, thereby allowing cancer to develop and spread. But finding these genetic offenders can be difficult.

End of life management - Conservative Style
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  8-31-2009    4
Feel sorry for the guy that he felt that was his only way out. Seems like physician assisted suicide would have been far less jolting on his loved ones. It's sad when you can not have a way to end your life on your terms in a dignified manner. On another note. While in Ireland Egan will be most remembered for attending a Sinn Fein annual convention right after 9/11. Because the visit took place directly in the aftermath of 9/11 Sinn Fein was under pressure on the terrorism front. Egan's presence signaled that the Bush administration was still determined to deal with Sinn Fein despite 9/11. What's this, conservatives negotiating directly with terrorists? Seems like all the noise from conservatives regarding direct political talks with terrorists is merely posturing and grandstanding for political gain regardless of outright hypocrisy.

Does virus vaccine increase the risk of cancer?
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-27-2009    1
"The vaccine - as Johannes Löwer, president of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, has pointed out - can also cause worse side effects than the actual swine flu virus." "Swine flu is not very different from normal flu. “On the contrary if you look at the number of cases it is nothing compared to a normal flu outbreak,” he added. The chairman of the health committee in the European Council has urged for a careful and calm reaction to the virus. Up until now, the producers of the vaccine did not know how many orders they would have by the autumn, but the German Government is now a guaranteed customer. Even the pharmaceutical companies are trying to exploit the fear of the swine flu pandemic."

When the "option" to die becomes a duty
4ensic
by 4ensic  8-10-2009
Of course the law was proposed as giving a choice to die with dignity, but appears to be on the road to becoming a case of "We will not treat you, so it's your choice to die in pain or commit suicide - which we'll foot the bill for." The spokesman for the State health plan called the letter " a public relations blunder and something the state is 'working on"'. Apologising for the manner in which the actions are communicated is NOT the same as apologizing for the action. Still, that's all the State has done.
