Research: Stereotypes Loom Larger As Our Brains Age
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: The second paper… contains a way around this problem.… "with explicit labeling, older adults were able to discount their stereotypes and avoid processing difficulties when subsequent stereotype-inconsistent information was encountered… when counter-stereotypical information is explicitly provided at encoding (that is, the first stage of the memory process, in which stimuli are initially registered), older adults are no more likely than younger adults to rely on stereotypes, and are similarly capable of altering their interpretation of a situation when information suggests that information is incorrect." In real life, of course, no one is pointing out biased statements as they emerge from the mouths or friends, family members or talk-show hosts. So for older adults, the best advice might be to avoid acquaintances who speak in stereotypes. This research suggests prejudice can be contagious, and we become more susceptible as our brains age.

"Rich people worry about that. Poor people don't," she said. "We're poor." Then, cutting our time-wasting interview short, she added: "So do you want to ride a jet ski or not?" A 52-year-old parking lot attendant laughed when asked if the plant worries locals. "We're used to it. Anyway, it's already been built, so what can we do?" The plant went online in 1984. "Back then, we didn't know it can be dangerous," he said. "Now we know."

Report on Strike of Textile Workers in Lawrence, Mass. In 1912:

The premium system, as actually worked out in the mills in which it is used, is somewhat complicated and is explained in detail for each occupation later in this chapter. The purpose of the system is to induce the largest possible output by each employee. The method of securing this varies. In some occupations a premium or a bonus in the shape of an amount of money in excess of the regular time or piece earnings is paid to each employee whose output exceeds some fixed standard. In some other occupations the premium or bonus is paid not directly on output, but for attendance-that is, it is paid any employee who has not missed more than one day during the four-week period.

Obama needs to support freedom in Iran The regime has always blamed Great Britain, the United States, Bahais, Zionists, and/or Jews for every ill that befalls the country. When the leadership claims God's mantle, it is hard to accept accountability for the failure of leadership; it is far easier to find straw men to blame. Don't underestimate the Iranian people, however. The protestors are no longer supporting former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi; they are chanting "Death to the Dictator" . They are opposing the Islamic Republic. While conspiracy theories loom large in Iranian culture " indeed, Iranians poke fun at their conspiratorial nature in often-humorous ways " the Iranian people can separate the wheat from the chaff. Those inclined to believe Kayhan, the Islamic Republic News Agency, or the Fars News Agency will do so no matter what we do. Those disinclined will not swallow regime propaganda simple mindedly.

Marriage Rights Granted In California!
Moliticon
by Moliticon  5-15-2009    1
(cont) The last time California voters were asked to express their views on gay marriage at the ballot box was in 2000, the year after the Legislature enacted the first of a series of laws awarding spousal rights to domestic partners. Proposition 22, which strengthened the state's 1978 one-man, one-woman marriage law with the words "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California," passed with 61 percent of the vote. The Supreme Court struck down both statutes with its sweeping opinion Thursday.

This is a real Charles Dickens story of the horrors of industrialisation in London during the Victorian era ... and shows the horrific 'transition costs' of moving towards a free market economy. The article also tells the tale of a most remarkable clergyman who achieved a great deal for his community ... in the most challenging of circumstances.

Michael Crichton 1942 - 2008
Mohir
by Mohir  11-6-2008    2
But what a strange career the man had, from Harvard Medical School to the top of the book and movie charts to Hollywood blockbusters to odd best-selling jeremiads against Japanese businessmen and global warming activists. The consistent themes of his work are the consequences of man's own hubris and a thoroughgoing paranoia. Someone is always coming up with a brilliant notion in Crichton, and it always goes hideously kablooey. Bring dinosaurs back to life? Okay, but they'll escape and gobble you up. Organ transplants? Fine until the medical establishment starts harvesting them for profit. Robots? Forget about the robots: they'll shoot you down ("Westworld") or come after you with knives ("Runaway"). Plastic surgery, biotech implants, chasing tornadoes? All terrible, terrible ideas ("Looker," "The Terminal Man," "Twister").
