The Return of the Robber Barons
sahara
by sahara  8-30-2008    1
Another deceit is the measure called “core inflation.” This measure of inflation excludes food and energy, two large components of the average family’s budget. Wall Street and corporations and, therefore, the media emphasize core inflation, because it holds down cost of living increases and interest rates. In the second quarter of this year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a more complete measure of inflation, increased at an annual rate of 5.2 per cent compared to 2.3 per cent for core inflation. An examination of how inflation is measured quickly reveals the games played to deceive the American people. Housing prices are not in the index. Instead, the rental rate of housing is used as a proxy for housing prices. More games are played with the goods and services whose prices comprise the weighted market basket used to estimate inflation. If beef prices rise, for example, the index shifts toward lower priced chicken.

Kiarostami - the godfather of Iranian cinema
arifsali
by arifsali  8-11-2008
Looking at Tazieh clearly invites westerners to step into Iranians' shoes. "Of course, I feel pain when I see that my country is considered evil," he says. "So in all my films, my wish is to give a kinder and a warmer image of human beings and of my country. Every morning, when I wake up, I have to say hello to my neighbours. And this is what I like to show in my films: friendship, love between people".

Cuba lifts ban on home computers
JediKnut
by JediKnut  5-3-2008
From the website: The government says it is unable to connect to the giant undersea fibre-optic cables because of the US trade embargo. All online connections today are via satellite which has limited bandwidth and is expensive to use. Cuba's anti-American ally, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, is laying a new cable under the Caribbean. It remains unclear whether, once the connection is completed, the authorities will then allow unrestricted access to the world wide web.

Is this the America we want to be to the rest of the World?
NonStatQuo
by NonStatQuo  12-8-2007
I have lived abroad for a very long time, and consider myself a global citizen, not just tied to one country. And having been born in the U.S.A. it makes me sad to see that people, my friends in other countries think that Americans are a violent lot. Can Americans not see why? Gun crime has spiraled out of control and it only takes living outside of the country to gain perspective. We should not be living in fear of each other. We should not have to have metal detectors in our schools. We should not have to accept that our society has changed this way. This boy should have been helped as all of them should have been helped BEFORE we get to this point. We need to look out for each other each day of our lives.

US Castoffs Become 3rd World Saviors
devans00

America's consumer culture pays off for some less fortunate people in the world. When a wheelchair gets too old or breaks down, it's cheaper for American insurers to spend $300 to replace it. Instead of filling up our landfills, this organizations help the chairs get to people who really need them all over the world. What's trash to an American well help another person get out of the dirt and have a more fulfilling life.

ideataxi

The price of Flights to Perth, Australia, over the last 10 years have dropped considerably. This is predominantly because Australia is in the top 3 countries, for Brits to emigrate to each year. Migrationwatch UK state that that there are presently 5.5 million expats living abroad, with a third of this number immigrating to Australia solely.

Great Information for Females in combat roles
mushmaster25
by mushmaster25  5-16-2007
this might offend some people, but there are reasons why women can not be in a combative role, supportive roles yes, but not directly in combat situations. Just look at the army and Jessica Lynch....Then the tragic case of Pat Tillman, does our country or our troops need anymore of that kind of that "bad press"? We need to support the real military men and women that are really doing the right things abroad and in country. Most of the time, Marines like the female corpsman because it gives them a chance to take things "slower" as one could say... Later in the article, it states she was the corpsman support for combat missions. There isn't the question of if she can do it or not, its a statement of physical capabilities proved by science and simple biology. Don't misunderstand this either, I have tremendous respect for Corpsman, if it wasn't for them, many Marines would not have a chance.
