Fulgurites - Fossilized Lightening
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-4-2009
"Archaeologists working near Corrie Village on the cost of Scotland’s Isle of Arrran in 1966 made an astonishing discovery: a fossilized fulgurite! Judging from the age and nature of the surrounding sandstone, the lightning strike which created the fossil fulgurite occurred some 250 million years ago at the end of the Permian Period. Though our planet has changed much since that ancient era before the dinosaurs even appeared, the fundamental physical processes that drive the hydrological cycle, including lightning, obviously have not..." Ares I-X Launch: NASA's New Rocket Blasts Off On Test Flight
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-28-2009
The prototype moon rocket took off through a few clouds from a former shuttle launch pad at 11:30 a.m., 3 1/2 hours late because of bad weather. Launch controllers had to retest the rocket systems after more than 150 lightning strikes were reported around the pad overnight. Then they had to wait out interfering rain clouds, the same kind that thwarted Tuesday's try. The ballistic flight did not come close to reaching space and, as expected, lasted a mere two minutes. That's how long it took for the first-stage solid-fuel booster to burn out and separate from the mock upper stage 25 miles up. But it will take months to analyze all the data from the approximately 725 pressure, strain and acceleration sensors. Parachutes popped open and dropped the booster into the Atlantic, where recovery ships waited

35 Dead as Lightning Strikes
merrie
by merrie  6-29-2009    3
Globally, about 100,000 people are injured and 10,000 people killed by lightning - more than the number killed by floods, hurricanes or tornadoes - the British weather bureau, the Met Office, says. The US National Weather Service says the odds of a person being struck by lightning are one in 5000. Jaswant Wajisinh Baria, a farmer, was sleeping under a tree when a bolt of lightning struck his thatched house, killing him instantly, the Indian Express reported. His wife, Sumitra, suffered burns at several places and needed treatment, while Baria’s three-year-old buffalo was also killed, the paper said. In the last two years, about 60 people have died from lightning strikes each year in the state of Jharkhand alone. In the state of Orissa, about 250 people lost their lives to lightning each year, and the "death roll" was rising, Padmanabha Behera, under-secretary with the office of Special Relief Commissioner, told The Hindu.

Lesser Known Facts About Lightening
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  6-8-2009    4
There is a story towards the end of the article which is fascinating. "A dramatic report of ball lightening comes from a housewife in the Midlands are of England on August 8, 1975. She was in her kitchen in Smethwick during a very strong thunderstorm. A sphere of light about ten centimeters in diameter and surrounded by a bright purple halo appeared over the stove. The witness is quoted in saying, 'The ball seemed to hit me below the belt, as it were, and I automatically brushed it away from me and it disappeared. Where I brushed it away there appeared a redness and swelling on my left hand. It seemed as if my gold wedding ring was burned into my finger.' She also reported that it vanished with a bang."

Subsidizing Bad Decisions By Thomas Sowell
merrie
by merrie  3-10-2009    3
and as if the people facing foreclosures are the only people that matter. What if the foreclosures are not stopped? Will millions of homes just sit empty? Or will new people move into those homes, now selling for lower prices-- prices perhaps more within the means of the new occupants? The same politicians who have been talking about a need for "affordable housing" for years are now suddenly alarmed that home prices are falling. How can housing become more affordable unless prices fall? The political meaning of "affordable housing" is housing that is made more affordable by politicians intervening to create government subsidies, rent control or other gimmicks for which politicians can take credit. Affordable housing produced by market forces provides no benefit to politicians and has no attraction for them. Study after study, not only here but in other countries, show that the most affordable housing is where there has been the least . . .

I'll never forget my oldest daughter having her first allergic reaction to shellfish. Her lips got extremely swollen and her throat was tingling. I ran for the Benadryl and tried not to have a coronary. But what I didn't do was to go to her school and demand that seafood be taken off the menu. We just talked about how she was to be careful about anything being fried with shellfish and she has never had another attack. I tried to warn her of the dangers but not freak her out.

Operation Lightning Thunder Strikes in DR Congo

On fears that the attack would kill innocent children and women in LRA camps, Magezi said the armies took the issue into consideration. “According to our intelligence, LRA fighters have been living separately from their families. These (fighters’ camps) are the ones we have attacked. We will ensure that women, children and captives are spared as we did in northern Uganda and South Sudan.”
