"The Void is the vacuum or nothingness between all physical manifestations. The SPACE between atoms and their components. Modern science has begun to study this space between everything. They call it Zero point. Whenever they try to measure it, their instruments go off the scale, or to infinity, so to speak. They have no way, as of yet, to measure infinity accurately."

In Hoc Anno Domini So the light came into the world
Jacob173
by Jacob173  12-24-2009    1
who heard strange voices or read strange manuscripts. There was enslavement of men whose tribes came not from Rome, disdain for those who did not have the familiar visage. And most of all, there was everywhere a contempt for human life. What, to the strong, was one man more or less in a crowded world? Then, of a sudden, there was a light in the world, and a man from Galilee saying, Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's. And the voice from Galilee, which would defy Caesar, offered a new Kingdom in which each man could walk upright and bow to none but his God. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. And he sent this gospel of the Kingdom of Man into the uttermost ends of the earth. So the light came into the world and the men who lived in darkness were afraid, and they tried to lower a curtain so that man would still believe salvation lay with the leaders.

How Wikipedia’s Green Doctor Rewrote 5,428 Climate Articles
merrie

unprecedented and dangerous warm period. As we now know from the Climategate Emails, this band saw the Medieval Warm Period as an enormous obstacle in their mission of spreading the word about global warming. If temperatures were warmer 1,000 years ago than today, the Climategate Emails explain in detail, their message that we now live in the warmest of all possible times would be undermined. As put by one band member, a Briton named Folland at the Hadley Centre, a Medieval Warm Period “dilutes the message rather significantly.” Even before the Climategate Emails came to light, the problem posed by the Medieval Warm Period to this band was known. “We have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period” read a pre-Climategate email, circa 1995, as attested to at hearings of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works. But the Climategate transcripts were more extensive and more illuminating —

Statement by the National Right to Life Committee On The New Reid "manager's amendment" to H.R. 3590
merrie
by merrie  12-19-2009    1
This seems to envision a system under which the OPM director would administer multi-state plans that cover elective abortions, and perhaps even possess authority to require such plans to cover elective abortions, as long as the director also ensured that there was one plan that did not cover abortions (except types of abortions also funded by the federal Medicaid program). This would be a sharp break from the policy that has long governed the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, which is also a program administered by OPM, under which private plans are completely prohibited from covering elective abortions if they wish to participate in the program. The Reid manager's amendment contains a new section providing that a state "may elect to prohibit abortion coverage in qualified health plans offered through an Exchange in such State if such State enacts a law to provide for such prohibition.

What metaphors to you live by?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  12-16-2009
I am working on a presentation on dealing with grief and loss. One of the metaphors used to mange this core issue is "a journey." No one grieves in the same way at the same speed or arrives at the same end destination (if there is one). This is why "a journey" is so useful when understanding our losses. What metaphors do you use to manage the losses in life? What general metaphors do you live by? Comment or tweet us a reply @thirstyfishinfo

What I Notice About Palin-Bashers
Jacob173
by Jacob173  12-16-2009    5
 5. A lot of them are ready to vouch for other women in power who are relatively homely and frumpy, like Hillary Clinton. 6. They breathe hard and their pulse quickens. I haven't run into too many people who are ready to calmly explain Sarah Palin's lack of qualifications. 7. Their laughter, in response to Palin jokes, is forced. 8. Their lofty opinions of the minimal requirements for the offices Palin has sought, or might seek, is selective. When the topic of conversation shifts to Joe Biden, suddenly it seems the Vice Presidency doesn't demand a whole lot out of anyone. 9. They don't seem to think it takes a whole lot to govern Alaska, or to even live there. They don't appear to think very highly of Alaskans. 10. A lot of people claim to like her personally, just don't "feel" (see Item #4 above) that she's "right";

Super-Earths Orbit Neighboring Stars
kareval
by kareval  12-14-2009
An international team of researchers detected the new planetary systems by combining information collected during years of observations at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Anglo-Australian Telescope in Australia. The astronomers combed the data looking for minute variations in the starlight caused by gravitational tugs of orbiting planets. "This was not the kind of 'ah-ha' moment where you look into the telescope and see the planet sitting there," Laughlin said. "The signal builds up over time." Refinements in planet-hunting techniques should make detection of Earth-sized planets possible in about a year, he added. "The practical limits for finding terrestrial planets around nearby stars is a lot more optimistic than what was thought to be the case a few years ago," Laughlin said. The newly discovered planets are too close to their parent stars for liquid water to exist on their surfaces, a condition that is believed to be necessary for life. Still, scientists say

Unexploded landmines? Call the HeroRats!
Lexica
by Lexica  12-13-2009    2
More: The cheapness of breeding and maintaining them is further helped by their ability to adapt to a number of environments. Once they are trained the rats seem to actively enjoy performing repetitive tasks and they do not get stressed if their trainers are changed in the way that dogs will. Plus of course – one serious advantage over dogs – they are too light to detonate a mine by themselves if they step on it. A living rat is better than a canine cadaver… The HeroRATS are currently deployed in Mozambique where they have enabled over one thousand families to reclaim their land. They have also helped with clearing areas so that power lines can be passed through – so bringing electricity which would not otherwise have been possible to over ten thousand local citizens. It is hoped that they will soon be deployed to Zambia, Congo and Angola as well, but negotiations are still underway.

Travel Luggage: Travel Luggage - What Features Should Travelers Look For?
garnetanne
by garnetanne  12-7-2009
Make sure that you always buy wheel-equipped luggage, including your carry-on. It's a good idea to carry luggage bungee cords with you to tie down any piggybacked luggage you may have. Soft-sided luggage is superior to hard-sided suitcases because the locks on the latter can easily break open when your luggage is unceremoniously thrown around. The luggage should be sewn with strong and durable, 1,000 denier cordura nylon or polyester. Each piece of luggage should have a padded, expandable handle that will lock into both short and long handle positions. All luggage that you buy should be light-weight, expandable, and have outside pockets. Your luggage should have large zippers and wide, rubber, recessed wheels. Luggage reviews can be researched on the website LuggageOnLine.com.
