POPSGovt blocks payment of Gitmo defense attorneys "government argues is required under U.S. law because the beneficiaries of the lawyers' services are foreign terrorists" - of course, these being "fair" trials, we wouldn't assume they were "terrorists," before their conviction, now would we? Justice means nothing in this political theater.

POPSSan Quentin's Paradox: 360 Inmates in 1 Cell Nobody deserves to live this way: Within 10 years, California's prison population has doubled. Now all of California's prisons are at twice or three times their capacity. 360 inmates live in the gym because there's no room anywhere else. For anyone to say this is not a frightening type of experience is wrong. 70% of California's inmates return to prison within 3 years, mostly for parole violations. To someone outside the system, parole may seem easy: Show up to appointments, don't drive on a suspended license, tell your parole officer if you move, don't do drugs. Parole can be tricky: Their lives are chaos with little education, few life skills and usually nowhere to live. Parole violations are expensive. California will cut back the education budget to supplement the $8 billion prison budget. To prevent parole violations inmates need counseling, job skills and drug treatment programs - now there isn't any money or room.

POPSThe Pigs emerge at the Beeb At a time when I am wondering if the BBC license is worth the paying, enormous payouts are being made, from my money, to people I do not want to pay. Paying so-called entertainers massive sums for moderate-if any- talent, telephone scandals, poor coverage and political genuflection to the Masters in Nu Lieber, the only outcome will be me getting a criminal record for throwing the box through the window. How's that, ses you? It is one of the laws of strict liability...

POPSFather accused of caging kids in his truck Hmm, makes perfect sense to me ;-) I'm telling you, we have it all backwards. It should cost more to get married than getting divorced. --AND-- You should need a license to have children, not a pet. Well maybe that should be also and there should be a test for both. Don't pass and get neutered.

POPSMicrosoft tries again to streamline volume pricing There's got to be a better way. Something that doesn't lock the organization in to pointless interim updates of all products but rather requires Microsoft to prove the value of upgrades like every other software vendor has to. Selling by default has been their process for so many years that they've forgotten how to sell. Locking the corporation into a cyclical license perpetuates that behavior.

POPSCalif. Heads Toward Initiatve On Legal Marijuana "That, as a smoking substance, marijuana is far less addictive or harmful to the health of the People than tobacco--That, even though alcohol is harmful to the health and safety of the People, the prohibition of alcohol from 1920 to 1933 only increased the harms associated with alcohol use"

POPSNew Power Source Looks Promising Dr. Randell Mills is a very smart man with a big research facility in Cranbury, NJ, and many millions in invested dollars. He's apparently found a way to move the electron in the H atom to move closer to the nucleus, = great energy output.

POPSKill Switches in devices could lead to authorities having control over your gadgets. This is more of the erosion of property rights. Those in power would love it for no-one to own property. If you buy a device that can ultimately be deactivated by the manufacturer or other authorities, this means they can deprive you of the use of something you own. I've been monitoring the erosion of personal property and am still amazed at the myriad of ways industries come up with in depriving consumers of rights. First the RIAA decided you never own music, you license it, the same goes for software. Now it's moving to hardware.

POPSSenators Challenge Illegal Border Searches of US Citizens unconstitutional, arbitrary search and seizure at borders widespread. Homeland Security gets challenged again by the 4th amendment, and it does not take a lawyer to prove they are illegally searching (like they do in airports too, without challenge). Where are the republicans...are they against freedom? Is this America or the Soviet Union? This is proof that customs is indoctrinated into paranoia and therefore over-aggressive action. If you go to Canada they pull all your personal info up on a screen...the Canadian customs apparently link to IRS files and your drivers license info here in the States!

POPSAnother Disappointment For Merck The FDA has opted not to approve the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil for women aged 27 through 45. Gardasil remains approved for girls and women aged 9 through 26. Lately, Merck's record with the FDA seems blemished. Exactly what issues does the agency have with Merck's Gardasil application? Merck doesn't really say.
