Photographs of War... or Not?
ruralart
by ruralart  Today 12:46 AM
What a complicated issue.... I can see the military wanting to preserve security and honor the memory of their dead; I can see families not wanting to be traumatized by photos of their loved ones; but I think about all we are still learning from photographs of WWI and WWII... and if there are no photos of the Iraq war, where will that leave historians of the future? Most of the WWI and WWII photographs were taken by military photographers assigned to document the actions. I wonder if there are still military photographers documenting todays "wars"?

Searching for American Indians in South Carolina
minority-builders-sc
by minority-builders-sc  Yesterday 9:06 PM
"Indians, Indians...come out, come out where ever you are! We want to study you", says the local newspaper. A little late seeing as the event to take surveys & collect info from the surviving Indians...is tomorrow! I only accidentally found it. I'm certain that the Minority Commision wants to "help" these minorities. Perhaps help them get set up for grants, contracting work and monies already earmarked for Minorities in SC. However, whoever is spearheading the PR campaign is not shining very well right now. I have seen nothing online except this lone article. I have seen NO public service announcements, heard radio spots...nothing. I am not criticizing their efforts, it just goes to prove my point - when you really want to help someone YOU SCREAM IT FROM THE RAFTERS AND ROOFTOPS - get "grass roots" on it if you have to! Lame attempts to announce "we're here to help you so come out and participate on short notice" is just not enough to be considered a real effort.

New York's Bravest Mourn Lost Brooklyn Firefighter
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 8:05 PM
A Brooklyn firehouse that lost five members on 9/11 is again mourning the loss of one of its own today, this one tragically killed while on vacation with his family. NY1’s Amanda Farinacci filed the following report. A flag hangs at half-staff and a bunting waved today outside the quarters of Ladder 111 Engine 214 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, days after 41-year-old firefighter Martin Simmons drowned trying to rescue his son while on vacation in Nevada. “Marty was what we call a premier firefighter in this company,” said firefighter Joe Honan. “He was almost one of the senior guys. He was a guy that took no trouble running things.”

Is the Web making young people vote?
Victoria Barret
by Victoria Barret  Yesterday 12:50 AM
Youth voter turnout has increased in recent elections, including this year's primaries. I believe the Web has made it easier and more interesting to be politically engaged -- and young people are connecting online.
