The Challenge of Freedom Part II
merrie
by merrie  Today 3:45 AM    3
a murderous totalitarian thug. He visited Copenhagen to receive polite applause from people that gave socialist dictator Hugo Chavez a thunderous ovation for his anti-capitalist ravings. Could anyone in this Administration deliver a heartfelt endorsement of capitalism to the hungry ears of the Iranian protesters? Would any of them even be willing to try? President Obama’s belief that America’s standing in the world would improve with his election, because he’s a “good listener,” is the exact opposite of the truth. Wise people, and nations, are always listening carefully… but the world improves when America speaks with confidence. Obama’s cherished Indonesian childhood, and the travels through the Muslim world he boasts of, have proven to mean nothing to the forces of Islamic fascism. He should have spent more time learning what his American heritage means to the people dying on the streets of Tehran, and those like them around the world. Doctor Zero Blog http://bit.ly/8lUxeb

Bin Laden Message to Europe: Withdraw from Afghanistan
zizzy
by zizzy  9-26-2009
I clipped the most intriguing phrases. Go to clip source to read entire message. The closing paragraph: His message seems to be Europe, you still have a chance. Don't go down with the American ship. Happy is whoever learns a lesson from the mistakes committed by others. Modest precautions are better than expensive follow-up care. Returning to truth is better than insisting on falsehood. And peace be upon those who follow the path of righteousness.

Challenging Authority for Good
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009    2
Speading the truth about our over-consumptive consumer culture and our modern food system can benefit us all tremendously. The more aware we become the healthier we will become. It’s a domino effect, we eat healthier, we stay away from health-related problems, we pay out less for health care, we live longer. I mean, where’s the downside? The blog lists some great learning sources: books, videos, and online sites that encourages we take part in global issues ranging from climate change to organic foods to clean water. We need to get this next generation interested and take advantage of their fresh ideas and youthful energy to keep it going. BTW, I've read all the books listed on the blog, except one and I just reserved that one at my library. They are very well written, informative and entertaining. Go get your self educated, trust me it won't hurt.

Struggling together towards diversity and respect
Lexica
by Lexica  9-9-2009
More: You have your comfort zone, where you are singing in the shower. And you have your danger zone, where someone is physically threatening you and you have to get away. In between are zones of dissonance, where you take risks and where learning happens. In order to learn, you have to be willing to explore those zones of dissonance. Hence, Experience Discomfort. Expect and Accept Non-Closure. It’s hard. My Spanish is pitiful, my Cantonese non-existent, and I don’t like being the one who is struggling to keep up. But it’s essential. To me, my work on intersectionality and race is an essential part of my geek feminist identity. It’s about deconstructing how I feel when I am the marginalized one, and applying those insights to other spheres of my life, where I am the one doing the marginalization. It’s about belonging to a community that does real work and overcomes real challenges. This is what I want for my daughters.

Learning to Live with Islam by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  8-24-2009
Ah, right. That's the big worry, is it? If you're wondering why the link above doesn't go to Lucy Cockcroft's report itself, that's because the Telegraph's original story appears to have suddenly gone missing. Funny how that happens when the subject under discussion is Islam. I would imagine Sebastian Faulks was asked a straightforward question and gave an honest answer. Lux et veritas ("Light and Truth"), as they used to say at Yale. But I would bet that, in the long run, the Zakaria approach will prevail. (Full disclosure: Sebastian came to stay at my pad in New Hampshire to research a novel partly set in my neighborhood. Aside from a blazingly vivid description of the breakfasts I made him, don't pick it up if you're looking for glimpses of real life chez Steyn: He turned me into a woman and had sex with me. I thought of issuing a fatwa and burning down his publishers, but I'm not the type to make a fuss.)

Birthers and anti-choicers: one and the same?
Lexica
by Lexica  8-4-2009    1
More: The birther conspiracy theory works the same way---pointing out evidence and logical arguments only expands the size and scope of the conspiracy in the minds of birthers. In fact the “Obama faked his birth certificate and was born outside of the U.S.” theory apparently erupted in part from an earlier conspiracy theory over Obama's middle name . With birthers, as with anti-choicers, more evidence of reality just gets them further into the thick of imagining even more complex and strange conspiracies. And just as the anti-choicers have moved on to concocting theories about how Planned Parenthood is part of a child sex ring that they’re covering up, I suspect the birther thing may grow in ways that are frightening in their complexity and lack of touch with reality.

Why Girls Have BFFs and Boys Hang Out in Packs
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-17-2009
"The authors of the study are reluctant to draw such broad conclusions about the gender disparities. "There are many different possible explanations," says NIMH neuroscientist Daniel Pine, who suggests a much more ordinary reason for the girls' more emotional response. "It might be possible that the girls are trying to remember what they wrote earlier ," he says. "You can imagine a scenario where they say, 'Oh, did I write something bad about that girl?' Boys are simply doing that less." In other words, it may be that boys are cads because they're not wired to be any other way." (Read "The Truth About Teen Girls.") - http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1840556,00.html

I saw the interview where Rush originally said he wanted Obama to fail. In context, It was very obvious he was referring to the Big Gov't spending Obama was proposing. He clearly said that he thought it was bad for the country and he wants Obama to fail because he wants America to succeed. I recommend finding the original source on this if you are looking for the truth.

wildlife in your backyard: Hands-on activities keeps kids entertained as they learn
chara
by chara  2-23-2009
Kids love growing their own plants. Where there are plants, & sources of water, there are wildlife creatures living and feeding among them. Birds are great seed spreaders and pollinators. They are also helpful in keeping the insect population under control. Birds enchant us with their lovely songs and kids enjoy watching them fly about. It's not too difficult to get kids interested in learning about birds as they are oftentimes already fascinated by them. All birds require three things—food, water, and shelter. Provide these three elements in the garden, and the birds will come.

A Bosnian Muslim's perspective on public political donation lists
Lexica
by Lexica  1-13-2009    2
Following the passage of Proposition 8, many of the people who donated money to help its passage now feel increasingly uncomfortable about having that financial support publicly known. Some have even filed a lawsuit to block their campaign finance records from public view . Now somebody has done a mash-up of Google Maps with the Prop. 8 donor list; the result is EightMaps . This clip is from a comment by a woman who grew up Muslim in Sarajevo. She knows something about what can happen when this kind of disdain for one's fellow citizens and refusal to recognize them as equals is allowed to fester and grow in the darkness of secrecy.

Ten Flags, and the first flag will be flown above the Bone Crusher CP, JBB HQ, AND the donor's choice of an F-16, C130, AH-60 Blackhawk, or Predator UAV, all based out of Balad. A significant number of flags over 20, and we can discuss the above, as well as making sure that the donor's flag is flown in every type of aircraft mentioned above. The Golden Donor, 100 flags or more, will receive all of the above, as well as having their flag carried to every Forward Operating Base to which the Bone Crushers travel. Good Human Beings & Great Atheistic Quotes

Gore Vidal interview led me here not any intention to rain on good Christians parade. The Jehovah,s Witnesses have just done their relentless rounds reminding me that no one was working in the fields when Jesus was born as it was Winter, seems each mob have their own "Truth". Gore Vidal spoke of Roman and Greek good guys 1000,s of years ago. We inherit to different degrees instinct/ breeding I know not which is most but a sense of sharing, fair play ,& compassion, you can see it in a multicultral playground ,until bullying by older kids surfaces, thats the time for the shrinks to come in to "play" together with parents but I,m no expert on any thing a seeker of love & balance and wish in Xmas silly season for moderation and time to chill out with friends & fun with kids. The christian ethics were the only moral compass I grew up with and my fathers indifference. I dont object to my own son learning them from his Catholic mother but after his 18 yr of hard child learning respect respo

Rubin-Enron-Citi-One more reborn savior??Not!
davboz
by davboz   11-13-2008
(Recall this from 2002) "But the Democrats have been unsure about whether to pursue the investigation into the political realm. Part of this timidity is a desire to avoid the appearance of partisan excess that, in the Clinton scandals, drew a backlash against the Republicans. But they are undoubtedly afraid that some of their own luminaries, Rubin chief among them, might end up on the wrong side of a subpoena. It would be a shame if these fears, and the media's reluctance to pursue these issues independently, kept the public from learning the truth about the political corruption involved in Enron's rise and decline."
