POPSChallenging Authority for Good Speading the truth about our over-consumptive consumer culture and our modern food system can benefit us all tremendously. The more aware we become the healthier we will become. It’s a domino effect, we eat healthier, we stay away from health-related problems, we pay out less for health care, we live longer. I mean, where’s the downside? The blog lists some great learning sources: books, videos, and online sites that encourages we take part in global issues ranging from climate change to organic foods to clean water. We need to get this next generation interested and take advantage of their fresh ideas and youthful energy to keep it going. BTW, I've read all the books listed on the blog, except one and I just reserved that one at my library. They are very well written, informative and entertaining. Go get your self educated, trust me it won't hurt.

POPSUN Planning Sex for Tots according to report Just thinking out loud here, do I really want my child to be learning about masturbation at the ripe old age of 5? Personally I think this idea borders on pedophilia but then of course what do I know I am simply a feather brained bird butt, but to this old bird this is a LOONY idea and should fly over the cuckoo's nest with the rest of the loony lefts ideas.

POPSNessie Gives Creationism a Boost more at source... "Could a fish have developed into a dinosaur? As astonishing as it may seem, many evolutionists theorize that fish evolved into amphibians and amphibians into reptiles. This gradual change from fish to reptiles has no scientific basis. No transitional fossils have been or ever will be discovered because God created each type of fish, amphibian, and reptile as separate, unique animals. Any similarities that exist among them are due to the fact that one Master Craftsmen fashioned them all."..."Teenagers studying for the certificate, which is taught in about 50 private Christian schools in the UK, spend half their time learning from evangelical US textbooks. The curriculum is based on the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) programme, which describes its ideology as "Christian fundamentalist"...

POPSThe American Way of War
(3) Explain the invasion to the American public in simple moral terms suitable for middle-school children at an evangelical summer camp: We are bombing cities to bring the gift of democracy and American values, or to defeat some vague but frightening evil, perhaps lurking under the bed, or to get rid of a bad dictator no longer of service to us, or to bring freedom and prosperity to any survivors. (This doesn’t work in Europe, which is honestly imperialistic.) The public can then feel a sense of unappreciated virtue when the primitives resist. Sententious moralism should always trump reason. (4) A misunderstanding of military reality helps. Besides, comprehension would only lead to depression. As Napoleon said, or may have, in war the moral is to the material as three is to one, which implies that unpleasant facts should be played down in favor of cultivating a cheerful attitude. Most especially, it should not be noted that a few tens of thousands of determined, probably genetically

POPSEzekiel Emanuel: Deny Coverage to Elderly & Disabled for Greater Good If a child's disorder is undetected by prenatal testing, what happens when the disorder becomes obvious after birth? I shudder to think what the government would come up with then. Emanuel's policies would lead to a further deterioration of our nation's culture as people begin to look at those with disabilities as objects that drive up collective health care costs instead of as individual human beings who have intrinsic value and rights endowed to them by God. ____________________ Shouldn't THIS be above Obama's pay grade?

POPSExpressions that define cultures 9. Maningue Nice, Mozambique A cross between a purely national term and a flair of English, maningue nice means “very nice” and is the closest thing to a slogan in Mozambique. Scream it from the tallest buildings whenever fortune favors you. 10. Bahala Na, Philippines Come What May. A Cross Cultural Theme When I started researching these expressions, I was expecting to find similarities based on geography: patterns in Asia, South America, Western Europe, etc. I was surprised, however, to find a cross-cultural theme; many of these phrases are used in response to circumstances beyond people’s control. How each culture is epitomized in these terms is indicative of how they react to unfortunate or unavoidable events. The Japanese and French suck it up; the Thais, Kiwis, Aussies, and others shrug it off; Arabs put the responsibility to a higher power.

POPSIs Language a Technology? What about the innate need to express ourselves and communicate driving us to learn and to create language? Language is also a very significant factor in natural selection. Are some languages more evolved than others? More successful? Or are they all of equal value? Can the contemporary mass extinction of languages be any more justified or allowed, than the mass extinction of species?

POPS"Ancient Art, Music Flowered as Communities, Not Brains, Grew " more (at source): “People learn from their parents or teachers in their group, and this model demonstrates you have to have a critical number of people learning to develop complexity,” Adam Powell, 28, a co-author of the study and a doctoral student at the London university. “The actual invention of all these technologies was probably very common, but was only passed on as density increased.”

POPSWhat 20 Countries Speak Spanish There are loads of ways to learn Spanish and the more committed and dedicated you are to learning the more likely you are to see success. Maybe not so much top-end travellers but definitely a lot of backpackers eager to stock up on "Donde esta?" and "Cuanto cuesta?" for the long journey ahead as well as a lot of the more adventurous North American High who might not be up for roaming around the continent but at least they will get out of the US/Canada into a native culture to spend a month somewhere different while learning the language. POPSUK primary education 'is deficient' I may disagree with some of the detail but this is welcome and long overdue. In fact it makes me rather cross because experienced teachers in primary education have been saying this for 20 years now. It'll be interesting to see if the government takes any notice.

POPSTime to end Black History Month? Can we just teach American History (the real version) and stop making PC points that over-reach? I just spent 2 1/2 wks working on a project about Louis Armstrong (required) with my G-son. Now, Mr. Armstrong was a great cornet, jazz musician. So? Reality...I'm not special, you're not special, no one is special....unless they live their lives in a way that benefits other human beings. And I think most all of us do that to some extent everyday. Make it an elective course in school.

POPSSocial media bigger than previously thought A very interesting conclusion of recent study by Pew shows that social media is on track for faster adoption than previously believed. POPSCultural Education My daughter's kindergarten class had a party with popcorn and punch as they watched the Inauguration on tv. I was really happy that they let them watch and encouraged them to be excited about our political process. My daughter asked me if we have ever had a woman as President and when I said no, she asked if a woman could be President. Then she wanted to know if she (as a kid) could vote. I don't want to waste an opportunity to encourage her interest. I think her school is doing a good job. Her description of MLK was terrific. "He was a man that changed things to make it fair for everyone."
