POPSPuerto Rico Unions Protest Job Cuts From the article: Several protesters, holding signs demanding work, directed their criticism at Gov. Luis G. Fortuño. He was elected to his first term last year as a Republican, promising to jumpstart the economy, but so far, job losses and negative growth have continued, punishing the island with its fourth year of recession. Governor Fortuño has said repeatedly that he did not want layoffs, but had no choice. In interviews on radio and television on Thursday, he said that it was the only way to avoid a government shutdown because of the territory’s $3.2 billion deficit. “There was no alternative,” Mr. Fortuño said. “And there is no turning back.” ----- Which I can tell you is an total lie.

POPSPuerto Rico: Massive Layoffs and a Scramble to Resist Critics say the layoffs, together with unprecedented budget cuts, will have a devastating impact on workers and their families—in addition to crippling many government agencies, including those that provide basic services and serve vulnerable groups, such as battered women and the elderly.

POPSObama Speaks At Congressional Black Caucus, Talked About What A Great Job He's Doing The New York Times is reporting today: Job seekers now outnumber openings six to one, the worst ratio since the government began tracking open positions in 2000. According to the Labor Department’s latest numbers, from July, only 2.4 million full-time permanent jobs were open, with 14.5 million people officially unemployed. And even though the pace of layoffs is slowing, many companies remain anxious about growth prospects in the months ahead, making them reluctant to add to their payrolls. Expect those numbers to increase even further if our president tries to push through cap-and-trade.

POPSmore from: Imperial Ambitions
it previously states-in the background is a long-standing US hatred of the European social system-which provides decent wages-working conditions and benefits-the US doesn't want that model to exist because it is a dangerous one-with the US economy deteriorating and with the prospect of more layoffs on the horizon, how is the Bush administration going to maintain what some are calling a garrison state-engaged in permanent war and the occupation of numerous countries-how are they going to pull it off- they onlly need to pul it off for another 6 years-by that time they hope to have institutionalized a series of highly reactionary programs within the US-they wil have left the economy in a serious state with huge deficits-by then it will be somebody else's problem-meanwhile they will have undermined social programs and diminished democracy which of course they hate- seems to me to be what has happened to us here in the United States in a bit of a nutshell- look at us now........he called i

POPSJail Inmates Help Run County's Animal Shelter
The inmates clean cages and care for the animals. They come in close contact with the public, but so far it hasn't been a problem. There are plenty of security measures in place, including cameras that watch over inmates at all times."I don't think it's a concern. We do have our correction officers here," Radebaugh said.At least two officers are present when the inmates are working. There are six to eight inmates at the shelter at a time.Curtis has enjoyed the couple of weeks he's spent at the shelter and the little bit of freedom that has come with it."It makes it go a little bit faster because you are out," he said."They'll come out and be productive members of society," Radebaugh said.Meanwhile, they're helping a county department during a sluggish economy. POPSIn support of the UC Faculty/Staff/Student walkout My wife is one of the thousands of UC staff who are walking the union picket lines today. Save public education! Pay those who teach and keep the university running rather than lining the pockets of the upper-floor executives! Note: If you're inclined to get all anti-union, my advice is this: save it. Not today, not on this clip. Because my wife & her co-workers and fellow union members are walking the line today. And I'll ban you in a heartbeat if you feel like getting up in my grill over this. Save it for another day.

POPSAmericans are being sacrificed on the altar of big business First manufacturing, then IT. And, even in midst of the worst "recession" since the Depression, it continues on. Yet we, the still employed, don't care. We stock our homes with foreign made goods and spend our money with companies that are slaughtering our middle class. The irony is starting to show itself. Good luck to our children with the future. They are going to need it.

POPSUVWX People do realize that the only reason that there are still layoffs is because the big bosses aren't willing to sacrifice some of their disgraceful levels of profits for the sake of jobs. It's not the recession that is causing unemployment to be so high; it's greed, plain and simple. Just look at how all the corporations are posting huge profits, even as the common man is suffering. It doesn't take a financial genius to figure out where the problem lies. You want to see employment snap up again quickly? I can tell you how to do it. Simply apply a 75% tax on all corporate profits over $1 million dollars, which can only be reduced if the company creates new, lasting jobs that pay a Living Wage. I wager that the corporations are so adverse to supporting the government they have their meat hooks into so much that they'd rather spend the excess money to make jobs, than give it to the government. And even if they don't, watch how fast the National Debt will drop. It's a Win-Win Plan.

POPSYou Drive Me Crazy: What Layoffs Do to a Marriage "We’ve all heard the jokes: “Retirement means half as much money—and twice as much spouse.” “For better or worse—but not for lunch.” Generations of retirees have chuckled knowingly at them. But now, thanks to the recession and the millions of layoffs it has produced, many young couples far from retirement age are discovering there’s more than a little truth in the humor. When one spouse (or both) stops working, the impact on the relationship can be profound. "

POPSExecs still get raises as UC cuts staffing, pay More: "These are outrageous actions, taken at the same time as UC has been pleading poverty, giving layoff notices, forcing staff and faculty to take furloughs and hinting at more student fee increases," said library assistant Kathy Renfro, chairwoman of the UC Berkeley Labor Coalition. The next time our union calls for a picket, I am SO there.

POPSMajor Cities' Plummeting Crime Rates Mystifying Not sure why they are baffled, it is pretty simple. Between Madoff, Wall Street and the banks wiping out a large portion of people's money and then the taxman, government, and foreclosures/layoffs taking the rest, there is not much for criminals to steal. You have to figure theft is out of the question since large majority of population has no $$, breaking and entering is tough - since so many foreclosures.

POPSThis is What Makes America Great In spite of all the blather coming forth from capital hill, this story once again proves the greatness of America. When the American people are FREE to live their lives and make their own decisions, we have proven time and again the USA is an altruistic nation. Although the current crop of political hacks continually speak down our nation and our economy, there are still hope for change. America is still great because her people are great.

POPSStimulus Reality: 1,000 Defense Workers Fired By Obama Today Obama’s War on Capitalism July 17, 2009 Stimulus Reality: 1,000 Defense Workers Fired By Obama Today As President Obama attempts to spin his way out of over-promising the immediate effects of his signature piece of legislation, the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)... ... a thousand defense workers get their pink slips today: "Our hearts and compassion certainly go out to our employees" and others affected by the layoffs, said Thursday. In a statement, Boeing said layoff notices will be issued to about 250 employees working in GMD at various locations, including Alabama, Alaska, California and Colorado. They are to receive an official 60-day advance notice today, but Jones said it won't be a surprise. Closing Velocity http://closingvelocity.typepad.com/closing_velocity/
