POPSLimbaugh's living large while radio boss Clear Channel implodes Cont.... The astronomical worth of Limbaugh's eight-year pact: $400 million. The amount of money Clear Channel execs have been trying to scrimp and save this year as they lay off thousands from the struggling company: $400 million. Ironic, don't you think? Context: Clear Channel now pays Limbaugh more than NBC pays late-night ratings king Jay Leno. Who thinks Limbaugh brings in more ad revenue for Clear Channel than Leno does for NBC? FYI, The Tonight Show generates approximately $200 million annually for NBC.

POPSAccountability in France What would be the outcome if union employees in the US employed the same tactics as their French counterparts? I'm betting that they would be arrested for kidnapping or false imprisonment. Most would be sent to prison and the rest fired. It most likely would have no effect on the outcome of the actions of the company to lay off the workers. The profit margin seems to be the final arbiter in the US. Would it be better to focus on people instead?

. . . . . . . . . Hitler's 'Germania' . . . . . . . . . . . The city dubbed “Germania,” would have far outshined the architecture of cities like Paris and Rome, with its center being the biggest domed hall in history. The tunnels are normally closed to the public due to safety, but tours can be arranged. Wild Wildlife After investigating stolen food, footprints and disheveled desks in a Georgia courthouse, authorities nabbed a masked vandal — a raccoon named Russell. But the raccoon, named Russell after the building, was not finished yet. Judges and staff who work in the building reported other thefts — chocolate chip cookies stolen from a 10th-floor desk, a sandwich on the 9th floor, and a packet of dried soup purloined from the 23rd floor. Wall Street greeted his election win by plunging nearly 500 points on Wednesday and it was down again by 274 points in afternoon trading.

POPS White Knights Remember Michael D. Brown — "Brownie" — former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency? He resigned in disgrace last September over the government's botched response to Hurricane Katrina. Knight Ridder's Washington bureau came up with a unique and exclusive angle on the story. A team of its reporters discovered that the primary blame did not rest with Brown but rather with his boss, the secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff. One of those reporters, Alison Young, learned this by reading a 426-page document, the National Response Plan, created by Homeland Security as a framework for action in events such as Katrina. The rules in this case made clear that Brown's power to act on his own in any such catastrophe was limited. Before the storm, Chertoff was supposed to have designated someone to direct and coordinate the entire federal response. Because he failed to do so until 36 hours after the storm had hit, there was bureaucratic confusion and delay.
