POPSBig-brained Animals Evolve Faster a substantial body of evidence has confirmed that animals with larger brains, relative to their body size, have more developed skills for changing their behavior through learning and innovation, facilitating the invasion of novel environments and the use of novel resources. Despite the progress, the role of the brain in the adaptive diversification of animals has remained controversial, mostly due to the difficulties to demonstrate that big-brained animals evolve faster. Now, ecologist Daniel Sol of CREAF-Autonomous University of Barcelona and evolutionary biologist Trevor Price of the University of Chicago, provide evidence for such a role in birds in an article in The American Naturalist. Analyzing body size measures of 7,209 species (representing 75% of all avian species), they found that avian families that have experienced the greatest diversification in body size tend to be those with brains larger than expected for their body size.

POPSMystery hairs 'may have come from a Yeti' Climber Sir Edmund Hillary also found large footprints on Everest in 1953. And in December last year, an American TV presenter reported 33cm-long footprints in the Everest region of Nepal. The scientists are using high-powered microscopes to analyse the samples. The hairs will then be sent to labs in Oxford and Cardiff for DNA testing. If DNA analysis cannot identify the creature, it should be able to establish what it is related to. The scientific community has largely dismissed the possible existence of Yeti but it remains one of the most famous creatures of cryptozoology, the study of unconfirmed animals.

POPS Olympic Nightmare: Sailing Team Stuck In Algae With less than six weeks before it plays host to the Olympic sailing regatta, the city of Qingdao has mobilized thousands of people and an armada of small boats to clean up an algae bloom that is choking large stretches of the coastline and threatening to impede the Olympic competition. Algae are now blooming over more than 12,900 square kilometers, or 5,000 square miles, of the sea, according to Xinhua.

POPSNew Research On Octopuses Sheds Light On Memory It is not completely understood how these two systems are interconnected, if at all. However, the organization in the octopus demonstrates a sophistication that was not described yet in other animals. In the octopus, the short-term and long-term systems are working in parallel, but not independently. This is so because the long-term memory area -- in addition to its capacity to store long-term memories -- also regulates the rate at which the short-term memory system acquires short-term memories. This regulatory mechanism is probably useful in cases where faster learning is significant for the octopus' survival in emergency or risky situations.

POPSMan accused of ordering python to attack girlfriend A 21-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly ordered his 9-foot-long albino python to attack his girlfriend and two police officers. Officers dispatched to investigate a domestic dispute were confronted by the man and his huge pet reptile, "and he was saying, 'Get them!' " according to a police spokesman. The snake didn't follow the orders.
