POPSIn scholar's arrest, many see everyday reality
Yet Martin could not think of any other way to explain what happened to Gates than racism. He is fascinated by the story. He talks about it at work, to friends, on the phone, on Facebook. On Wednesday, he changed his Facebook status to: "Wayne Martin is wondering when it became illegal to be angry at a law enforcement official." Sabine Charles, 37, a white cardiologist who lives in Hyde Park, is married to a black man. She said that she could not count how many times people have interrupted the two over the years to ask her, quietly, "Is this man bothering you?" "I say, 'Guess what? He's not! We're actually on a romantic date, can't you tell?'" she said. "Even here in this diverse area I've heard people say, 'Look at those black guys coming toward us.' I say, 'Yes, but they're wearing lacrosse shorts and Calvin Klein jeans. They're probably the kids of the professor down the street.' "You have to be able to discern differences between people," she said, criticizing the practic

POPSLeonard Pitts, Jr. – "You don't really know me" More: So I was not surprised (it was just another day at the office) last week when a white woman from suburban Philadelphia called police from her cellphone, claiming she had been locked in the trunk of a Cadillac by two black men. Nor was I shocked (it was just another day in the life) when police said Bonnie Sweeten was actually holed up in a luxury hotel at Walt Disney World, and there never was a kidnapping, much less by two black men… University of Florida law professor Katheryn Russell-Brown, author of The Color of Crime, has documented 92 such incidents between 1987 and 2006. She cautions that white men are sometimes victims of racial hoaxes: witness the cases of Tawana Brawley and the Duke lacrosse team. But she says the overwhelming majority of the time -- 67 percent, to be exact -- it is the other way around: white liars blaming black men for things that did not happen

POPSOrange Juice Cornell for Record Victory In what is surely the greatest NCAA championship playoff series no one watches, Syracuse defeated Cornell to win their record 11th division one lacrosse title. As is typically the case, this year's final was amazing. Cornell (which had not been to the title game in over 20 years) surprised the tournament favorite Virginia in the semis, crushing them to advance into the championship game. Cornell then proceeded to dominate the Orange for about 57 of the 60 minutes before the fireworks started. Not much fun to be sure for Cornell, but one helluva game to watch for lacrosse fans. That is, of course, unless you're a Cornell alum. Congrats to the Orange and coach John Desko for his 5th NCAA title

POPSCoach Says Duke Spokeman Slandered Him Wow! I would argue the latest contract signed is the one you go by--and that is what Pressler and his lawyer(s) wants. But Duke wants to do otherwise; that right, Duke only wants to do what it wants; Duke can't follow the law for some reason.

POPSDespite Lacrosse Quandry, Many Still Choose Duke I cannot believe this. It would be because of the Lacrosse incident a few years ago, I would make Duke forbidden as a choice for higher education–some will never learn. If Duke Pres. Richard Broadhead can’t give the jocks due process, will he any other student?

POPSNew Suspect in Sports Doping Is, No Joke, Viagra
Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, was devised to treat pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure in arteries of the lungs. The drug works by suppressing an enzyme that controls blood flow, allowing the vessels to relax and widen. The same mechanism facilitates blood flow into the penis of impotent men. In the case of athletes, increased cardiac output and more efficient transport of oxygenated fuel to the muscles can enhance endurance. “Basically, it allows you to compete with a sea level, or near-sea level, aerobic capacity at altitude,” Kenneth W. Rundell, the director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Marywood, said of Viagra. Some experts are more skeptical. Anthony Butch, the director of the Olympic drug-testing lab at U.C.L.A., said it would be “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to prove that Viagra provided a competitive edge, given that the differences in performance would be slight and that athletes would probably take it in combination with other drugs. Nerve!
