POPSHuman trafficking in Lebanon for home workers No, not human trafficking of Lebanese but of women from the Philippines, Madagascar, and other countries. To be nannies, housekeepers, and not what they were promised. Where are the police in Lebanon, the Philippines, Madagascar - counting their bribes it seems.

POPSICE: Wait, wait! Let me shoot myself in the other foot too! Sigh... We had a process that enabled children and parents to be reunited fairly quckly. Now to "protect" kids, we are going to lock them up for months before they can be returned to their parents. I guess Homeland Security cloned Dumb and Dumber many more times than we thought they did.

POPSWhat did slave labor make for you? Human trafficking is as much about child labor slavery, as it is about sex. Something that you already own was probably made by a child slave. Find out what is is so you don't support slavery any more!

POPSHuman Trafficking: It's not just about sex slavery Like that relatively inexpensive Asian fruit you can get at your local Safeway, Ralphs, Krogers? Was it picked by forced labor in Hawaii? What about those great, cheap tomatoes you get in the winter? Were they slave labor picked or by United Farm Workers?

POPSStealing & Selling Kids - Here! Child trafficking is a problem in Eastern Europe, in South Asia and USA. It's not just for sex that children are trafficked but that's the big ticket item here in USA. Disgusting - yep. Who's buying and who gets jailed when police departments stop denying there is a problem in their community. In Cincinnati, they think it's not a problem but it's not just weed and coke that travels I-74, I-75 and I-74 interstates!

POPSSex Worker Rights, Unionization - Not for These Kids Lately, some folks have been promoting and romanticizing about sex worker discrimination, rights and potential for unionization in the US and other countries. There is nothing romantic or cool about trafficking kids and young women and men for sex or labor slavery.

POPSYou Need a Lineup to Know Who the Scum Are The other day, an organization I thought was great - CARE - Asked me and thousands of others to buy Old Navy GAP and Banana Republic items on sale, so GAP would make a big donation to CARE. I had no handy list to see if those companies were not involved in child labor or abusive labor practices. It took me a while to find out that buying those products contributes to labor and child trafficking. We need the list that our government has and is supposed to publish!

POPSSlave Labor. Tell the Department of Labor To Release Its List of Goods Reasons why this is so important: Slavery by kidnapping and by forced labor is highly profitable. Human trafficking has become an overwhelming problem which is offsetting the nerves of our government, robbing our families of loved ones, and destryong the lives of thousands of children and adults throughout the states and abroad. They must be backed into a corner, with a clear message that bully tactics and slavery won't be tolerated. There are repercussions for their actions.

POPSAmerican Companies Using Trafficked Labor So where's the list that the Department of Labor was supposed to draw together in 2005? Gee, it was here someplace. Maybe someone sent it to the wrong address? The dog ate it? I think someone spilled unfair traded coffee on it.

POPSYou Cannot Save the World but Now You Know Omar Big numbers are sometimes a reason for avoiding doing anything about a problem you know is wrong. Guess what? That's a lousy excuse - sorry but it's true. As Peter Block says about leadership - everyone is in charge of themselves - you can act, you can say something, you can make a difference.

POPSLabor Trafficking Posing as Cultural Exchange Au Pairs in Europe and US are sometimes described as opportunities for young people to earn and learn in another culture. In too many case, however, it is just another way to get cheap labor that is vulnerable to wage, hours, and work conditions buse.

POPSHuman Trafficking & Modern-day Slavery The U.S. Government (USG) in 2007 continued to advance the goal of eradicating human trafficking in the United States. This coordinated effort includes several federal agencies and approximately $23 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2007 for domestic programs to boost anti-trafficking law enforcement efforts, identify and protect victims of trafficking, and raise awareness of trafficking as a means of preventing new incidents. – Adapted from U.S. State Dept Trafficking in Persons Report, June, 2008

POPSIvory Coast Chocolate is the Problem In 2005 the International Labor Organization estimated that up to 6% of the 200,000 children involved in cocoa production could be the victims of human trafficking or slavery. These children are enslaved and abused, forced to work unbearably long hours and are often beaten. Many of these children are victims of trafficking and are working completely against their will. You can make an effort to stop this injustice by taking five minutes to tell Hershey how important it is for them to help end child slavery in Africa by calling them today at 1-800-468-1714. Also see a list of Fair Trade chocolate companies so you won’t feel as guilty about your sweet tooth.

POPS12 Years Jail Sentences For 2 US Journalists Imprisoned in NKorea U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she was "incredibly concerned" about the plight of the two women. In working for their release, Clinton said she has spoken with foreign officials with influence in North Korea and explored the possibility of sending an envoy to the North, but suggested that no one would be sent during the trial. Another American who was tried in North Korea in 1996 was treated more leniently. Evan C. Hunziker, apparently acting on a drunken dare, swam across the Yalu River - which marks the North's border with China - and was arrested after farmers found the man, then 26, naked. He was accused of spying and detained for three months before being freed after negotiations with a special U.S. envoy. The North Koreans wanted Hunziker to pay a $100,000 criminal fine but eventually agreed on a $5,000 payment to settle a bill for a hotel where he was detained.

POPSbottom of the ladder - Human Rights WATCH reports
June 15, 2007 Bottom of the ladder. Girls recruited into domestic work in Guinea often live in conditions akin to slavery, and many are victims of trafficking. A 15-year-old girl, sent by her father at age 8 to work for a woman in the capital Conakry, told Human Rights Watch: "The woman suggested to my father that she could look after me and send me to school .... I have not been in contact with my father since ....her husband rapes me. He does it each time his wife travels. I am scared." There is no child protection system in Guinea. Child trafficking, child abuse, and labor exploitation are very rarely prosecuted. Mexico: The Second Assault Obstructing Access to Legal Abortion after Rape in Mexico March 6, 2006 This 92-page report details the disrespect, suspicion and apathy that pregnant rape victims encounter from public prosecutors and health workers and exposes continuing and pervasive impunity for rape and other forms of sexual violence in states throughout Mexico.

POPSChild maid trafficking moves from Africa to USA Thousands of kids in US suburbs in forced labor. One family gets caught: "The couple pleaded guilty to all charges, including forced labor and slavery. They were ordered to pay $76,000, the amount Shyima would have earned at the minimum wage. The sentence: Three years in federal prison for Ibrahim, 22 months for his wife, and then deportation for both"
