To which, Senator Franken fired back quoting the Constitution. "Article 1 Section 8 of our Constitution gives Congress the right to spend money for the welfare of our citizens. Because of this, Chief Justice Rehnquist wrote, 'Congress may attach conditions on the receipt of federal funds and has repeatedly employed that power to further broad policy objectives,'" Franken said. Whatever … Also at WS, Steven Hayes, hurtfully, “Speak timidly and don’t carry a stick.” Ralph Peters, NYPost, cruelly: “Appease-y does it for weak Prez on the road to a Mideast apocalypse.” Greenwald, Should any Iraq lessons be applied to Iran? I can think of a few quick applicable Iraq lessons off the top of my head. Whack one tyrant, the rest notice. Also, whacking tyrants effectively neutralizes their ability to cause trouble. Also, follow-on is important, don’t let the Euros weasel out of it, and ignore the Dems and the anti-war American left. They are loud, but harmless.

POPSWelcome to the World of 'Chicago-Style' Politics "You've unfortunately reacted by once again resorting to the playbook of the Chicago political machine." Issa particularly notes the coordinated effort against Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. Issa quotes a Politico report that claims Emanuel launched a campaign using cabinet secretaries to send letters to Gov. Brewer following remarks by Kyl on the Sunday talk shows where he blasted the stimulus. The idea was to intimidate Gov. Brewer under "suggestion" that stimulus money could be withheld because of the statements by Sen. Kyl. Issa noted, "The fact that the letters were coordinated by you to maximize the level of intimidation is supported by the timing, structure, and content of each letter. Not only were the four letters all sent the day following Senator Kyl's remarks, but they were also remarkably similar in tone and sentence structure."

POPSIssa goes Rahm-bo on Rahm Last month, Politico reported that Emanuel had “launched a coordinated effort to jam” Senator Kyl and other Administration critics… “ fter seeing Kyl and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) again paint the legislation as a failure on Sunday talk shows, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel directed that the letters from the Cabinet secretaries be sent to Brewer, according to two administration officials.” Issa noted, “The fact that the letters were coordinated by you to maximize the level of intimidation is supported by the timing, structure, and content of each letter. Not only were the four letters all sent the day following Senator Kyl’s remarks, but they were also remarkably similar in tone and sentence structure.”

POPSNew Haven Firefighters Testifies on Judge Sotomayors Senate Hearing Sotomayor has defended the Ricci decision, saying that she and her colleagues were bound by precedent. Kyl challenged that argument, saying, You will not acknowledge that even though the Supreme Court said theres no precedent you still insist, somehow, that there was precedent there that you were bound by? Sotomayor replied that the high court choose to adopt a different test in its review of the case. Continuing Kyls questioning, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina challenged Sotomayors intent. Mr. Ricci has a story to tell, too, and the court has gone, in the opinion of many of us, into the position of societal change, he said. Identity Politics The question of identity politics has dominated the hearings all week. Do you embrace identity politics personally? Graham asked Sotomayor Thursday. Personally, as a judge, I dont embrace it in any way with respect to judging, she replied.

POPSPost-Stimulus Job Growth By Month A neat graph of the job growth the Obama administration projected if the stimulus was passed versus actual stimulus. This leads to two possibilities: A) The Obama administration has absolutely no idea what it’s doing about the economy. B) The Obama administration knows exactly what it’s doing about the economy and means to destroy it and us. My guess is that A is correct, but keep possibility B in mind.

POPSAIPAC Bill to Cut-off Oil Products from Iran, Jeapordizes US Economy More
Iran imports 40% of its petroleum products, which AIPAC is leaning on Congress and Obama to cut-off under pretext of "nuclear threat" (hogwash, no evidence of that). See the video and details from the 2009 AIPAC Conference just concluded. Let's imagine the consequences of cutting of oil products from Iran: 1. Iran could reduce supply of crude petroleum to US and others, and get OPEC to agree. Iran controls a large percentage of world supply of crude. 2. Gas prices in the U.S. would skyrocket (again), in this economic war on Iran, in the midst of a severe recession and high unemployment (still growing)! 3. In consequence of #2, all consumer products (that require transportation and fuel) would also skyrocket , causing inflation of prices during recession and unemployment! AIPAC does not care about the U.S. , only the radical Zionist agenda of a "new middle east", and only them with nuclear weapons. Tell Congress NOT to support this legislation!

POPSAmnesty USA stops anti-Palestinian Kyl amendment Sen. Kyl proposed an amendment to the budget bill prohibiting use of any of its funds for assistance to Palestinian refugees resettling in the USA - the first time refugees would have been officially discriminated against by nationality in US law. 12,000 AIUSA volunteers emailed or faxed the Senate. Kyl withdrew it.

POPSEmanuel: Limbaugh Is The Voice Of The GOP FTA: Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) apologized Wednesday to “my fellow conservatives” for comments critical of talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh – saying he sees “eye-to-eye” with Limbaugh and that his remarks defending House Republican leadership came across more harshly than intended. --- “I regret and apologize for the fact that my comments have offended and upset my fellow conservatives—that was not my intent,” Gingrey said in a statement. “I am also sorry to see that my comments in defense of our Republican Leadership read much harsher than they actually were intended, but I recognize it is my responsibility to clarify my own comments.” I think the Republican members of Congress got the message loud and clear. Steele and Kyl and Cornyn and McConnell and Boehner will take Limbaugh's orders dutifully, even if they try to distance themselves away from them publicly. For the most part they just recite his talking points anyway.

POPS Geert Wilders Visit Washington, Senate and Supporters The reception will feature a screening of Wilders’s courageous and hard-hitting film Fitna, which demonstrates how Islamic jihadists use the Qur’an and Islamic teachings to justify acts of violence and terrorism, and which has become the focus of efforts by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to restrict and criminalize free speech about the global jihad threat. A question-and-answer period will follow. Many luminaries of the counter jihad movement will be there. This is going to be so fabulous!

POPSFirst a Stimulus Deal, Now the GOP Whining We've had eight years of Republican's "better ideas" Jon. Turns out they aren't better ideas -- they're stupid ideas. Had all this free market moonyism actually panned out, then you'd have some basis to bitch. Of course, had all this free market moonyism actually panned out, there wouldn't be a need for an economic stimulus anyway. This will be the GOP until 2010 -- complaining about everything, trying to block everything, and political grandstanding. If you value your life, don't get between a Republican and a TV camera for a while.

POPSConservatives and Neocons Praise Obama's Foreign Policy Team Obama's team is filled with a continuity, not a change, cast of players. Did Obama mislead democrats on foreign policy, or did they just not listen to what he said, particularly in his debate with McCain (where they sounded alike on war) and his trip to the Middle East? Republicans are more happy than Democrats. The global wars for regime change will continue.

POPSReplace Western Capitalism With Islamic Economic System?
This is so because, at its core, Shariah is sedition: It explicitly espouses the violent overthrow of all secular governments and constitutions – including those of the United States – in favor of a global Islamic theocracy. The Yerushalmi memo makes clear that Shariah advisors – who play a central role in this industry as it falls to them to determine whether transactions are Shariah-compliant or not – and/or the companies that employ them appear to be involved in one or more of the following: racketeering, anti-trust violations, consumer and securities fraud or material support for terror. Senator Jon Kyl, the Senate's number two Republican and senior member of Finance Committee found the conclusions of the Yerushalmi memo to be sufficiently alarming that in August he sought official reactions to its findings from Bob Kimmitt's boss, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, SEC Chairman Chris Cox, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Attorney General Michael Mukasey.
